Today, at the height of a global pandemic, our need for the national unity and international cooperation seems to grow more acute than ever. As always, education is playing an important role in maintaining the development and rejuvenation of the public life. The national ideology of our country promotes the principles, which also have universal character, and are cherished not only by our people, but also the people of the world. So, we argue that national idea should play, albeit small, a role in the national education. The article contains numerous arguments in favor of this position.

The paper presents a review of foreign studies of individual differences in creativity and executive functions (EF) carried out within the last decade. We consider mainly such EF as updating, inhibition and switching. The key research questions concern direct involvement of EF into creative abilities and their mediating role with respect to correlation of intelligence and creative performance. Studies applying structural equation modelling are being prioritized within the review. The key findings are described with respect to EF and (1) divergent and (2) convergent creative problem solving in adults. The latter includes performance on insight problems and remote associates tasks. Developmental perspective is highlighted by addressing to studies with children and adolescents’ samples involved. We discuss theoretical context, measurement issues as well as educational importance of the findings which link executive functioning and creativity within individual differences approach.

In 2011, the British philosopher and Professor of Higher Education Research, Ronald Barnett wrote: “Universities are no longer permitted to be places of mystery, of uncertainty, of the unknown. The mystery of universities has ended.”1 This was said in times where the neoliberal agenda was at its zenith and marketisation and consumerization, performativity and commodification had great impact on universities. What Barnett called for was a recovery of the sense of wonder in the encounter and presence of mystery. What indeed is language? What on earth is a human being? What is fundamentally love? Friendship? Human consciousness? Human reality? Truth? etc., etc.

This chapter explores the educational importance of Hatsune Miku, a Japanese Vocaloid, or singing vocal android, whose name translates as “first sound from the future.” Drawing on a theoretical framework from sound studies, we characterize Vocaloids such as Miku as a medium for musical development and experience in which people, practices, institutions, and technologies create recurrent patterns of social interaction from which the recognizable medium of “Miku” emerges. A vignette from one of the author’s experiences creating with Miku leads to an exploration of educational issues within Miku. Also examined are recent efforts by Yamaha to introduce Vocaloid to schools. The discussion explores continuing challenges and issues for the profession going forward, including speculation on potential challenges and outstanding issues.

A common assertion regarding the trajectory of surgeons from training to independent practice is that the first five years after completing training encompass the steepest learning curve of a young surgeon’s career. That assertion is often made in the context of beginning to perform operations independently.  However, it is likely that an under-recognized but equally steep learning curve will occur as newly minted surgeons begin to run their own clinics. In fact, it is likely that there is no aspect of surgical training with a greater discrepancy between the educational value for and the interest by surgical trainees than preoperative, postoperative, and follow-up clinics for surgical patients.

This chapter contains a 1942 article written by publisher M.C. Gaines about the exhibit The Comic Strip: Its Ancient and Honorable Lineage and Present Significance, organized for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) by Jessie Gillespie Willing, which first opened at the National Arts Club, NY. It was the first known touring exhibit to show comics in art historical context with ancestors like Japanese scrolls, Mayan Panels, and cave paintings alongside contemporary comic strips and comic books. This may have been the first exhibit to include a wide selection of comic books including More Fun, Superman, and Wonder Woman #1. Gaines opines on the educational importance of comics in reply to the decency movements that were attempting to censor comics in this era. Images: Caniff exhibit 1946, Fred Cooper cartoon 1942.
