E-cooperative problem solving as a strategy for learning mathematics during the COVID-19 pandemic

The aim of the article is to present the benefits of cooperative learning in mathematics in distance teaching conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. In longitudinal studies, six math teachers formed a collaborative network and developed scenarios for three projects to be implemented by students on an educational platform. During their eight-week implementation, the principles of cooperative learning, using the methodical implications of the self-determination theory (SDT) have been followed. Mathematical problems were solved using the capabilities of the Teams platform. Among students (N = 104) from five sixth grades of primary school who took part in the study, measurements of social-emotional skills were carried out using the Distance Learning Climate questionnaire (DLC-21), designed for the study. The students have shown a high level of mathematical performance (84.8%), the significant increase of the relatedness to the group and the significant decrease in a sense of situational fear. The results also indicate a high level of students' sense of competence and satisfaction associated with the implementation of mathematical projects. The obtained results should be included in further research on the effectiveness of distance mathematics teaching methods.

Gender gaps in science: systematic review of the main explanations and research agenda

Despite improvements in the incorporation of women in tertiary education and science, today persist several gender gaps in some scientific and technological areas worldwide. Understanding the factors that determine these gaps is essential to the incorporation of women into knowledge societies in terms of equity. The present research sought to explore and systematize the explanations given to this phenomenon by the international literature in the last four decades. The objectives were: (1). Analyze the evolution of the main research agendas and categorize these into groups (or clusters) of explanations, and (2) discuss the challenges that research agendas face in addressing the phenomenon in a multi-causal way. The data were obtained from the articles contained in the Web of Science (WoS) and were subjected to a systematic review using bibliometric and qualitative techniques. The analysis reveals an important growth of the research in this area within the social sciences, which is grouped into five main types of explanation: (1) student performance in STEM areas, (2) influence of gender stereotypes and models, (3) interests and educational-learning experiences, (4) educational-occupational expectations and choices, and (5) uneven advancement and performance in scientific careers. Evolution shows that explanations about performance and individual choice have lost weight in the present, giving rise to explanations about the influence of gender stereotypes and models within educational systems and socialization stages. This study thus contributes to the understanding of the causal factors that have determined gender gaps in science while identifying some gaps in research agendas.

Aceptación tecnológica y adicción a las redes sociales en contextos obligatorios virtuales

El acceso a las nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación por parte de la población se han incrementado en los últimos años, lo que ha llevado a que estas se integren de manera natural a la vida diaria de las personas. El ámbito educativo y empresarial sin duda son los sectores que mayores beneficios han obtenido con estos avances, tanto en lo positivo como de lo negativo. El presente estudio tiene por finalidad analizar la relación entre la aceptación tecnológica y la adicción a las redes sociales en estudiantes universitarios de la ciudad de Arequipa, Perú. La población estuvo conformada por estudiantes del segundo ciclo de 46 escuelas profesionales de la Universidad Nacional de San Agustín de Arequipa. Para la selección de la muestra se recurrió a un procedimiento no probabilístico incidental, seleccionando en total n=2470 estudiantes. Los instrumentos aplicados fueron el modelo de aceptación tecnológica (TAM), diseñada por Yong y el Cuestionario de Adicción a las Redes Sociales (ARS) de Escurra y Salas. Los resultados muestran que existe relación directa y baja entre la aceptación tecnológica y la adicción a las redes sociales dado que la correlación de Pearson es de .211, el tamaño del efecto es de 0.4593 y la potencia estadística es de 0.997. Se concluye que existe correlación de tipo muy débil; sin embargo, el tamaño del efecto es grande y la potencia estadística, muy alta. Estos resultados permiten abrir nuevos espacios de estudio de estos fenómenos

Propuesta de didáctica de la Programación en Educación Primaria basada en la gamificación usando videojuegos educativos

La enseñanza de la programación en Educación Primaria es un tema de interés investigador a nivel mundial. En este artículo, la contribución se centra en una propuesta de didáctica de la programación en Educación Primaria basada en la gamificación con un videojuego educativo. En el curso 2019/2020 se realizó un experimento con un grupo de 100 estudiantes de 10 a 12 años que siguieron esta propuesta didáctica, obteniéndose mejoras significativas en el aprendizaje de los conceptos básicos de programación al tiempo que se recibieron comentarios positivos sobre su satisfacción y motivación, validándose así la propuesta realizada.

Evaluación de habilidades informacionales en estudiantes universitarios de la República Dominicana

La Alfabetización Informacional juega un papel importante dentro del desafío que presenta la sociedad del conocimiento, por tal motivo se hace necesario formar sujetos que sean capaces de interactuar con la información en diferentes formatos; para lograr esto se necesitan proyectos de investigación que permitan dar respuestas a las necesidades actuales a través de evaluaciones que permitan conocer la situación real de las estudiantes . Esta investigación muestra los resultados de un estudio sobre el nivel de habilidades observadas en el manejo de la información de los estudiantes de educación del Instituto de Formación docente Salomé Ureña (ISFODOSU) en la República Dominica; del cual se extrajo una muestra de 347 sujetos a los que se les aplicó un cuestionario de 10 ítems sobre competencias Informacionales Observadas (CIO). Como resultados se pudo notar que los estudiantes son más competentes buscando y comunicando la información, mientras que en la dimensión de evaluación y procesamiento las medias resultaron inferiores, ya que estas implican un trabajo cognitivo complejo para los sujetos. Esta investigación contribuirá a la creación de programas dirigidos a fortalecer las necesidades evidentes de información que poseen los estudiantes, principalmente en las dimensiones donde la problemática es mayor, pudiendo ser extensivo no solo a los estudiantes de educación, sino, a otros de distintas áreas, obteniendo un alcance mayor de la población estudiantil.

School Bullying from Multiple Perspectives: "A Qualitative Study"

The study aim to identify the reality of school bullying from the perspective of the victims, bullies, educators, and workers in one of the private schools at Nablus city. The researchers employed the qualitative research method that was based on face-to-face interviews. Moreover, the age range of the selected sample was between 13-16 years old. The study's findings revealed the forms of bullying at the school, its causes, and the school policy to tackle it. Most of the results were characterized by having a problematic definition of "bullying." Moreover, the school was confused about dealing with bullying in all its forms, and there was a clear strategy to address the problem. The study recommend the necessity of school-based bullying prevention and treatment programs designed to reduce the bullying phenomenon at schools.

Posibilidades y limitaciones de la indagación inductiva con métodos mixtos en el análisis de la dinámica de diálogo en una comunidad de práctica profesional on-line

En la investigación sobre Comunidades de Práctica (CdP) on-line puede haber múltiples enfoques en función de los presupuestos ontológicos y epistemológicas de los investigadores. Cada enfoque presenta fortalezas y debilidades. En este artículo, a partir de la investigación sobre la dinámica de diálogo de una CdP on-line, estudiamos las posibilidades y limitaciones de la utilización de un acercamiento inductivo usando métodos mixtos. A partir de un diseño secuencial exploratorio, se analizan desde diferentes perspectivas los diálogos producidos por la CdP durante dos años. Los resultados de dichos análisis son contrastados en diferentes momentos con entrevistas a los participantes. Los análisis progresivos permiten definir el concepto “zonas de diálogo”, característico de la dinámica de esta CdP. El análisis del proceso metodológico seguido muestra cómo este tipo de diseños ayudan a generar conceptos teóricos, permiten a los participantes comprender sus propias dinámicas, facilitan el estudio diacrónico del fenómeno y aportan visiones más complejas del caso. El soporte digital del intercambio en estas CdP facilita los sucesivos análisis cuantitativos y cualitativos sobre los diálogos. Sin embargo, esta metodología precisa de tiempos prolongados de estudio, una inmersión prolongada en el contexto y una buena relación con los participantes. Por otra parte, los textos on-line no recogen los contextos de producción del discurso ni las transformaciones sufridas por aquellos participantes que no escriben.

Disabled Students at the Palestinian Universities: Birzeit University as a Model

Universities vary in the logistic support they provide for the disabled students. At the same time, universities can be a model for the bigger society in the way they undertake and involve this category. In this study, we tried to explore how do students of disabilities perceive their university life at Birzeit University. This will definitely reflect their relationship to their wider society. We also tried to identify the various challenges face the disabled students during their university life. Participants own narratives were used to collect data in focused groups. Data from interviews was transcribed and analyzed following the qualitative approach of content analysis. Results indicated that the disabled students at Birzeit University are trying to live as independent students. They believe that their daily experiences are very similar to other students’ experiences at the university. This perception helps them to construct a positive sense of self, which, in turn, encourage them to overcome the social burdens upon them. In conclusion, the interviewees believed that their disabilities are not what identify them as students. Regarding their relationship to the society, the disabled students struggle to change the stereotype that the society stigmatizes them with as incapable and helpless. The results indicated also that the disabled students are distinguished by having the ‘desire ‘which is their main motif to achieve their dreams and to challenge the existing stereotyping about them. They do not give up; they have a strong will and determination to achieve their goals. The study recommended increasing the financial and learning support for disabled students and raising the awareness about their potentials among Birzeit University students.

The Virtual Museum VM as a Tool for Learning Science in Informal Environment

This study aims to check if a Virtual Museum (VM) is a tool for learning science in an informal environment for lower basic grades from the perspective of parents and children. The study followed the mixed method quantitative and qualitative data collected from the main field-testing stage from the perspective of the user (children and parents) in the educational Research and Development (R & R&D) methodology, the evaluation tools used as instruments for parents, and one for parents for children with a focused interview. The parents' evaluation test yielded positive feedback, and the parents found that the VM is appropriate. The parents were similar in their opinion toward the VM to academic qualifications. The children's evaluation test yielded positive feedback. Children found that the VM is appropriate. Children's comments showed a greater interest level in learning science with technology through gaming and multimedia. They were very excited about using the VM, which helped them understand the subject content and navigate to search for scientific information.
