The influence of uniaxial prestress on dielectric and piezoelectric performance was studied for soft lead zirconate titanate piezoceramics. High electric field induced polarization and longitudinal/transverse strain were measured at different compression preload levels of up to −400 MPa. The parameters evaluated included polarization/strain outputs, dielectric permittivity, piezoelectric constants, and dissipation energy as a function of the mechanical preload and electric-field strength. The results indicate a significant enhancement of the dielectric and piezoelectric performance within a certain prestress loading range. At much higher stress levels, the predominant mechanical depolarization effect makes the material exhibit hardly any piezoeffect. However, the enhanced performance achieved by a small stress preload is accompanied by an unfavorable increased hysteresis, and consequently, increased energy loss, which is attributed to a larger extrinsic contribution due to more non-180° domain switching induced by the combined electromechanical load.

Barium titanate (BaTiO[Formula: see text] nanoparticles having small tetragonality were prepared via sol–gel technique followed by post-calcinations at 800∘C. The tetragonal phase was confirmed by XRD and TEM measurements. The obtained nanoparticles were quasi-spherical in shape with particle size lying between 30[Formula: see text]nm and 35[Formula: see text]nm, as obtained by TEM. The prepared sample was further characterized by TGA, DSC, FTIR, UV-Vis and PL spectroscopy. The low tetragonality of the obtained nanoparticles accounts for the absence of endothermic–exothermic peak in the DSC curve. The UV-Vis spectrum reveals band gap narrowing and the PL spectrum shows a broad band covering a large part of the visible spectra with the PL intensity maximum at 568[Formula: see text]nm. The dielectric and electrical properties were studied using LCR and Two probe method, and it shows a decrease in the permittivity as well as the tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature.

AbstractIn this study, an external electric field was used to facilitate the growth of vertically aligned ZnO crystal rods on the surface of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates in an aqueous solution. We used Zn(NO3) and C6H12N4 as precursor and reagent. We found that the external electric field generated by DC potential of 5 kV between two electrodes that were placed outside the bottle could facilitate the growth of homogeneous, high density and vertically aligned ZnO crystal rods. Position of the substrate during the growth of crystal was found to be important to obtain well aligned crystal. The crystals that were grown near the negative electrode had the best properties. Photoluminescence measurement at room temperature revealed sharp peaks at around 360 and 380 nm and a broad peak around 420 nm that indicated good properties of ZnO crystals grown with external electric field.

The capacitance of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) [001]-oriented single crystal was examined as a function of temperature and applied external dc electric field. The phase transition temperatures under the applied electric field were measured upon cooling the crystal (zero-field heating field-cooling condition) from paraelectric cubic phase. From these data, temperature versus electric field phase diagram of PMN-xPT crystal have been constructed and discussed.
