G. I. Gurdjieff (c.1866–1949) was born in Gyumri, Armenia and raised in the Caucasus and eastern Asia Minor. He also traveled extensively throughout Turkey to places of pilgrimage and in search of Sufi teachers. Through the lens of Gurdjieff’s notion of legominism, or the means by which spiritual teachings are transmitted from successive generations, this article explores the continuing significance of spiritual practice and tradition and the ways that these forms remain relevant in shaping contemporary trends in spirituality. Beginning with Gurdjieff’s use of legominism, the article provides reflection on some early findings done in field research in Turkey— through site visits, interviews and participant-observation—conducted in the summers of 2014 and 2015. The aim of the project is both to meet individuals and groups, particularly connected to Sufism, that may have some contact with the influences that Gurdjieff would have been familiar with, and to visit some of the sites that were part of Gurdjieff’s early background and which served to inform his work. Considerations of contemporary practices include the view of spiritual transmission, and practices of pilgrimage, prayer and sohbet, or spiritual conversation, in an ongoing discourse about spiritual transformation.

Three family members from two successive generations showed a moderate bleeding disorder. The bleeding times (Duke and Ivy-Borchgrevink) were both constantly prolonged. Platelet aggregation induced by ADP and adrenaline showed no second wave; collagen at low to moderate concentrations failed to aggregate and release ATP whereas higher amounts aggregated and released. Aggregation and release due to thrombin, ristocetin and synthetic epoxy derivatives (U 44069 and U 46619) were normal. Arachidonate (A.A.) was inactive and was not converted into thromboxane (TX) A2 activity evaluated on the rabbit aorta strip. The patient’s platelets did not respond to A.A. when PRP from an aspirin treated control was added. Platelet phospholipids (PL) were labelled by 14C - A.A. before stimulation by thrombin (T). Radioactivity of the PL of the propositus' platelets was affected with T to a similar extent as 5 laboratory controls, indicating that the phospholipase activity was not impaired. In contrast, no TXB2 was found: 0.9 p. cent as compared to 6 p. cent of total radioactivity in controls.Our data suggest a deficit in cyclo-oxygenase particularly since the levels of PGE2, PGF2a and PGD2 were within the limits of detection. These results seem to rule out the possibility of a TX-synthetase deficiency with excessive production of anti-aggregating PGs. This study suggests that transmission is autosomal dominant and confirms that cyclo-oxygenase is not needed for aggregation and ATP-release by high amounts of collagen.

This paper presents the chemical and phase composition, microstructure, and selected properties both at room temperature and at the temperature corresponding to the expected operating conditions of three successive generations of TiAl-based alloys (Ti-47Al-2W-0.5Si, Ti-45Al-8Nb-0.5(B,C), and Ti-45Al-5Nb-2Cr-1Mo-0.5(B,C)-0.2Si) melted in a vacuum induction furnace with high-density isostatic pressed graphite crucibles. The obtained results of mechanical and physical properties of the produced alloys were compared to the properties of reference alloys with similar chemical composition and melted in a cold copper crucible furnace. The effect of increased carbon content in the produced alloys due to the degradation of the graphite crucible during melting is higher strength properties, lower plastic properties, higher coefficient of thermal expansion, and improved creep resistance. It was shown that the proposed technology could be successfully used in the production of different generation TiAl-based intermetallic alloys.

AbstractElevated CO2 (eCO2) modifies plant primary and secondary metabolism that subsequently impacts herbivore insect performance due to changes in its nutritional requirements. This laboratory study evaluated interactions between Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and melon (Cucumis melo L., Cucurbitaceae), previously acclimated two or six weeks to different CO2 levels, eCO2 (700 ppm) or ambient CO2 (400 ppm). Under eCO2, melon plants decreased nitrogen foliar concentration and increased carbon to nitrogen ratio, independently of acclimation period, significantly reducing the content of some amino acids (alanine, asparagine, glycine, isoleucine, lysine, serine, threonine, and valine) and increasing the carbohydrate (sucrose) content in melon leaves. The dilution in some essential amino acids for aphid nutrition could have aggravated the reduction in A. gossypii population growth reared on melon previously acclimated two weeks to eCO2, as well as the loss of aphid body mass from two successive generations of A. gossypii reared under eCO2 on plants previously acclimated two or six weeks to eCO2. The response to eCO2 of phloem feeders, such as aphids, is actually variable, but this study highlights a negative response of A. gossypii to this climate change driver. Potential implications on control of this pest in a global change scenario are discussed.

ABSTRACTThis article examines the seemingly dichotomous linguistic processes of transmission and diffusion (Labov, 2007) in the regional variety of French spoken in Béarn, southwestern France. Using a sociophonetic apparent time methodology, an analysis of nasal vowel quality provides evidence for the advancement of linguistic changes from below taking place between successive generations during the transmission process, as well as for change from above taking place in the variety as a result of exposure to diffusing non-local varieties of French. The results address Labov's (2007) assertion that it is rare to investigate incremental changes occurring from below in European dialectological studies and shed light on the transmission–diffusion interface by showing the adoption of an individual change from above to instigate a faithfully-transmitted counterclockwise chain shift in the regional French nasal vowel system.

AbstractThe stability of spinosad resistance in western flower thrips (WFT),Frankliniella occidentalis(Pergande), populations with differing initial frequencies of resistance was studied in laboratory conditions. The stability of resistance was assessed in bimonthly residual bioassays in five populations with initial frequencies of 100, 75, 50, 25 and 0% of resistant individuals. There were no consistent changes in susceptibility of the susceptible strain after eight months without insecticide pressure. In the resistant strain, very highly resistant to spinosad (RF50>23,000-fold), resistance was maintained up to eight months without further exposure to spinosad. In the absence of any immigration of susceptible genes into the population, resistance was stable. In the case of the population with different initial frequency of resistant thrips, spinosad resistance declined significantly two months later in the absence of selection pressure. With successive generations, these strains did not change significantly in sensitivity. Spinosad resistance inF. occidentalisdeclined significantly in the absence of selection pressure and the presence of susceptible WFT. These results suggest that spinosad resistance probably is unstable under field conditions, primarily due to the immigration of susceptible WFT. Factors influencing stability or reversion of spinosad resistance are discussed.

Available anthropometric reference values for elderly people do not include specific norms for over-90-year-old subjects despite their increasing number. In the present study, weight, height and a number of anthropometric variables related to body muscle and fat mass were collected from fifty-seven nonagenarian and forty-one centenarian healthy, non-institutionalized subjects living in an Italian area. Recumbent anthropometry was used to avoid errors associated with impaired mobility. Nonagenarians and centenarian men were taller and heavier than women of corresponding age and had a greater amount of muscle and trunk fat, whereas women showed a marked peripheral adipose distribution. Anthropometric values of both age-groups were generally lower than published norms for 70–89-year-old American and European elderly people. However, differences were less marked when comparing Italian nonagenarians and centenarians with French and British people aged 85 years and over than when comparing Italian subjects with American octogenarians and younger European elderly people. Taken together these findings suggest a dramatic loss of muscle and fat mass in over-90-year-old subjects with respect to younger elderly people. However, changes between successive generations and geographical influences cannot be excluded. The need for local and age-specific norms in nutritional assessment of over-90-year-old people is emphasized. It is also suggested that current anthropometric indices may not be reliable when evaluating the oldest elderly subjects.
