ABSTRACT The potential of a race tire strongly depends on its thermal condition, the load distribution in its contact patch, and the variation of wheel load. The approach described in this paper uses a modular structure consisting of elementary blocks for thermodynamics, transient excitation, and load distribution in the contact patch. The model provides conclusive tire characteristics by adopting the fundamental parameters of a simple mathematical force description. This then allows an isolated parameterization and examination of each block in order to subsequently analyze particular influences on the full model. For the characterization of the load distribution in the contact patch depending on inflation pressure, camber, and the present force state, a mathematical description of measured pressure distribution is used. This affects the tire's grip as well as the heat input to its surface and its casing. In order to determine the thermal condition, one-dimensional partial differential equations at discrete rings over the tire width solve the balance of energy. The resulting surface and rubber temperatures are used to determine the friction coefficient and stiffness of the rubber. The tire's transient behavior is modeled by a state selective filtering, which distinguishes between the dynamics of wheel load and slip. Simulation results for the range of occurring states at dry conditions show a sufficient correlation between the tire model's output and measured tire forces while requiring only a simplified and descriptive set of parameters.

An important problem facing engineers and officials in the United States is the constraint imposed on transportation due to limitations of bridges. These limitations typically constrain vehicles to minimum heights and widths, to minimum and maximum lengths, and to a maximum allowable weight. However, with current demands of society and industry, there are times when a truck must carry a load that exceeds the size and weight of the legal limit. In this situation, the trucking company requests from the state departments of transportation an overload permit. For a truck with a wheel gauge larger than 1.8 m (6 ft), the process of issuing a permit for an overload truck requires a tremendous amount of engineering efforts. This is because the wheel load girder distribution factors (GDFs) in the design specifications cannot be used to estimate the live-load effect in the girders. In some cases, an expensive and time-consuming finite element analysis may be needed to check the safety of the structure. In this study, the finite element method is used to develop a modification factor for the GDF in AASHTO’s LRFD Bridge Design Specifications to account for oversized trucks with a wheel gauge larger than 1.8 m. To develop this factor, nine bridges were considered with various numbers of girders, span lengths, girder spacings, and deck slab thicknesses. The results indicated that use of the proposed modification factor with the GDF in the design specifications can help increase the allowable load on slab-on-girder bridges.

The general track spectrum of Chinese main railway lines (ChinaRLS) and the track spectrum of American railway lines (AmericaRLS) are compared in terms of character of frequency domain, statistical property of time domain samples and dynamic performance. That the wavelength range of the ChinaRLS, which is characterized by the three levels according to the class of railway line, is less than AmericaRLS at common wave band of 1~50m is calculated. Simultaneously, the mean square values of two kinds of track spectra are provided at the detrimental wave bands of 5~10m, 10~20m, and so on. The time-histories of ChinaRLS and AmericaRLS are simulated according to the trigonometric method, and the digital statistical nature of simulated time samples is analyzed. With inputting the two kinds of time-histories into the vehicle-railway system, the comparative analysis of the two kinds of dynamic performances for ChinaRLS and AmericaRLS is done in terms of car body acceleration, rate of wheel load reduction, wheel/rail force, and the dynamic responses of track structure. The result shows that ChinaRLS can characterize the feature of the Chinese track irregularity better than AmericaRLS, the track irregularity with the ChinaRLS of 200km/h is superior to the AmericaRLS, and the track irregularity with the ChinaRLS of 160km/h corresponds to with the sixth of AmericaRLS.

In this paper, a modified generalized Lorenz-type system is introduced, which is state-equivalent to a simple and special form, and is parameterized by two parameters useful for chaos turning and system classification. More importantly, based on the parameterized form, two classes of new chaotic attractors are found for the first time in the literature, which are similar but nonequivalent in topological structure. To further understand the complex dynamics of the new system, some basic properties such as Lyapunov exponents, Hopf bifurcations and compound structure of the attractors are analyzed and demonstrated with careful numerical simulations.

Tire longitudinal forces of electrics vehicle with four in-wheel-motors can be adjusted independently. This provides advantages for its stability control. In this paper, an electric vehicle with four in-wheel-motors is taken as the research object. Considering key factors such as vehicle velocity and road adhesion coefficient, the criterion of vehicle stability is studied, based on phase plane of sideslip angle and sideslip-angle rate. To solve the problem that the sideslip angle of vehicles is difficult to measure, an algorithm for estimating the sideslip angle based on extended Kalman filter is designed. The control method for vehicle yaw moment based on sliding-mode control and the distribution method for wheel driving/braking torque are proposed. The distribution method takes the minimum sum of the square for wheel load rate as the optimization objective. Based on Matlab/Simulink and Carsim, a cosimulation model for the stability control of electric vehicles with four in-wheel-motors is built. The accuracy of the proposed stability criterion, the algorithm for estimating the sideslip angle and the wheel torque control method are verified. The relevant research can provide some reference for the development of the stability control for electric vehicles with four in-wheel-motors.

A super lightweight deck can enhance load rating and functionality of a bridge, especially those identified as structurally deficient. This study was aimed to develop and experimentally validate a novel bridge deck as an ultra-lightweight low-profile waffle slab of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) with either carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) or high strength steel (HSS) reinforcement. The proposed system lends itself to accelerated bridge construction, rapid deck replacement in bridges with load restrictions, and bridge widening applications without the need to replace girders. Performance and failure modes of the proposed deck were initially assessed through extensive lab experiments and finite element analysis, which together confirmed that the proposed deck panel meets the AASHTO LRFD requirements. The proposed deck system is not susceptible to punching shear of its thin slab and fails in a rather ductile manner. To evaluate its long-term performance, the system was further tested under the dynamic impact of wheel load at the Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) facility of the Florida Department of Transportation using a Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS).
