The toxic effects of four disinfectants viz., copper sulfate (CuSO4), potassium permanganate (KMnO4), methylene blue and malachite green on fish and fish pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Edwardsiella sp. and Flavobacterium sp. were investigated. Lethal concentration of the disinfectants to fingerlings of Labeo rohita was determined in aquarium by standard method. Lethal concentration of copper sulfate (CuSO4), potassium permanganate (KMnO4), methylene blue and malachite green against fish were found in 0.75ppm, 7ppm, 6ppm and 0.5ppm at 21.4hrs, 18hrs, 9.5hrs and 1.40hrs, respectively. Methylene blue at 4ppm and 5ppm concentration inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens and 6ppm concentration suppressed the growth of Aeromonas sp. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) was effective only against Edwardsiella sp at concentration of 10ppm and 8ppm. Malachite green repressed the growth of all four tasted bacteria at a concentration of 1ppm. In order to study the soil amend agent how to suppress the function of the vegetables absorb Pb, the Pb was added in the experimental soil in pakchoi pot, The lime and peanut dry cake were added to the experimental soil as modifier, and the varying concentrate of modifiers, lead effect on pakchoi biomass and lead accumulate were discussed in this paper. Through the determination of Pb content of aboveground and underground part of pakchoi by ICP, the lime and peanut dry cake can resist lead absorption were proved, and the lime achieved better inhibitory effect of the two. By analyzed the BCF of two parts of pakchoi, two types of modifiers had proved can reduce the pakchoi BCF of Pb in the soil. The lime was more efficient than the peanut dry cake on reducing BCF of Pb.

The addition of oxalate to blood stored in Citrate-phosphate-dextrose (CPD) produces a marked improvement in 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) preservation; an increase in 2,3-DPG levels can also be documented in short-term incubation studies. Oxalate is a potent in vitro inhibitor of red cell lactate dehydrogenase, monophosphoglycerate mutase, and pyruvate kinase (PK). In the presence of fructose 1,6-diphosphate the latter inhibitory effect is competitive with phospho(enol)pyruvate (PEP). Determination of the levels of intermediate compounds in red cells incubated with oxalate suggest the presence of inhibition at the PK step, indicating that this is the site of oxalate action. Apparent inhibition at the glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase step is apparently due to an increase in the NADH/NAD ratio. Oxalate had no effect on the in vivo viability of rabbit red cells stored in CPD preservatives for 21 days. Greater understanding of the toxicity of oxalate is required before it can be considered suitable as a component of preservative media, but appreciation of the mechanism by which it affects 2,3-DPG levels may be important in design of other blood additives. Malonate, the 3-carbon dicarboxylic acid analogue of oxalate late did not inhibit pyruvate kinase nor affect 2,3-DPG levels.

A large multicentre epidemiological study was carried out by WHO between 1991 and 1995 to analyse the duration of lactational amenorrhoea in relation to breast-feeding. The main results of this analysis, which used classical statistical modelling, have been already published. However, some specific aspects of the postpartum fertility amenorrhoea and breast-feeding covariates, and more specifically the observed progressive exhaustion of the breast-feeding inhibitory effect on the reproductive axis, may justify a closer look at the validity of the statistical tools. Indeed, as has already been emphasized, analysis of large longitudinal data sets in reproduction often faces three difficulties: (i) the precise determination of the event of interest, (ii) the way to handle the time evolution of both the studied variables and their effect on the event of interest and (iii) the often discrete nature of the data and the associated problem of tied events. The first objective of the present work was to give additional insights into the estimation and quantification of the dynamics of the effect of breast-feeding over time, considering this covariate either as fixed or time-dependent. The second objective was to show how to perform the analyses using corresponding adapted procedures in widely available statistical packages, without the need for acquiring particular programming skills.

Filaments of Anabaena have a spaced pattern of differentiated cells called heterocysts, which is maintained as a filament grows by the regular determination of new heterocysts. By following the growth of every cell in a filament, we have identified proheterocysts (prospective heterocysts) at their earliest appearance, and described the sequence of events in the formation of the pattern. The determination of proheterocysts obeys 2 rules: (1) that there are inhibitory zones around pre-existing heterocysts, and (2) that only the smaller daughter of a division can become a heterocyst (all divisions are asymmetrical). There are, however, certain conditions in which these rules are over-ridden, where a pattern consisting of groups of consecutive proheterocysts is seen which resolves into a normal discrete pattern. This process is highly suggestive of interaction between developing cells. We have tested this hypothesis in normal growth conditions by breaking filaments near to early proheterocysts, on the assumption that this will cause a build-up of inhibitory effect of the cell upon itself. It is found that these cells regress, losing their differentiated character and dividing. We therefore propose an interactive model for pattern formation in Anabaena.

The presented work aimed to study the inhibition using nanoparticles produced by the green synthesis in selected acetic acid and lactic acid bacteria, which are related to viticulture. The degree of ability to eliminate silver particles produced by green syntheses was determined using the plate method on Petri dishes. This is done using two different approaches - the method of direct application of the solution to the surface of the inoculated medium (determination of inhibition zones) and the method of application using nanoparticles to the inoculated medium. Gluconobacter oxydans (CCM 3618) and Acetobacter aceti (CCM 3620T) were studied from acet acetic bacteria. The lactic acid bacteria were Lactobacillus brevis (CCM 1815) and Pediococcus damnosus (CCM 2465). The application of silver nanoparticles was always in concentrations of 0, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 g.L-1. All applied concentrations of silver nanoparticles showed an inhibitory effect on the monitored microorganisms. Silver particles could be used in wine technology for their antibacterial effects, mainly to inhibit microorganisms during vinification, as a substitute for sulfur dioxide.

Inadequate responses to traditional chemotherapeutic agents in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) emphasize a requirement for new effective compounds for the treatment of this malignancy. This study aimed to investigate the antiproliferative property of cucurbitacin B on KKU-100 CCA cells. The determination of underlying molecular mechanisms was also carried out. The results revealed that cucurbitacin B suppressed growth and replicative ability to form colonies of CCA cells, suggesting the antiproliferative effect of this compound against the cells. Flow cytometry analysis demonstrated that the interfering effect of cucurbitacin B on the CCA cell cycle at the G2/M phase was accountable for its antiproliferation property. Accompanied with cell cycle disruption, cucurbitacin B altered the expression of proteins involved in the G2/M phase transition including downregulation of cyclin A, cyclin D1, and cdc25A, and upregulation of p21. Additional molecular studies demonstrated that cucurbitacin B suppressed the activation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) which consequently resulted in inhibition of its kinase-dependent and kinase-independent downstream targets contributing to the regulation of cell proliferation including PI3K/PDK1/AKT and p53 proteins. In this study, the transient knockdown of FAK using siRNA was employed to ascertain the role of FAK in CCA cell proliferation. Finally, the effect of cucurbitacin B on upstream receptor tyrosine kinases regulating FAK activation was elucidated. The results showed that the inhibitory effect of cucurbitacin B on FAK activation in CCA cells is mediated via interference of EGFR and HER2 expression. Collectively, cucurbitacin B might be a promising drug for CCA treatment by targeting FAK protein.
