Highly crystalline and dispersible zirconia, synthesized by solvothermal reaction of zirconium (IV) isopropoxide isopropanol complex in benzyl alcohol, were functionalized with silane coupling agent and dispersed with o-phenylphenoxyethyl acrylate (OPPEA). Silane coupling agents such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) of amino functional silane, decyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS) of alkyl functional silane and 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS) of acrylate functional silane have been used to modify nanoparticle surfaces and obtain dispersion of nanoparticles within OPPEA. The surface modified zirconia was compared according to silane coupling agent, FT-IR and TGA demonstrated that APTES, DMTS and MPS are chemically attached to the surface of the zirconia. The MPS-zirconia is dispersed as about 5 nm sized, whereas the APTES-zirconia, DTMS-zirconia are agglomerated. The MPS-zirconia/tetrahydrofuran (THF) sol at 15wt% loading shows high transmittance of 68 % at 550 cm-1 and the 50wt% surface modified-zirconia/OPPEA sol show refractive index of 1.657.

The prepared n-Cu particles with the particle size about 20 nm by KBH4 reduction method in aqueous solution was surface modified using silane coupling agent. The surface modification mechanics was researched. The tribological performances of n-Cu particles were tested by friction wear test machine. The results show that the modified n-Cu paritcles by silane coupling agent have high purity, good dispersion performances and wonderful surface activity. In friction process, the modified n-Cu particles can form a layer of organic-inorganic compound film with synergistic effect on worn surface, which improves the tribological performances of friction material.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) surface modified by silane coupling agent KH550 were prepared to modify bitumen, the surface modified LDHs (KH550-LDHs) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of KH550-LDHs and LDHs on physical and anti-ageing properties of bitumen was evaluated by means of physical test. The results of FTIR showed that KH550 had successfully grafts onto the surface of LDHs, and XRD result showed that KH550 had little effect on the crystal structure of LDHs. The storage stability test showed that KH550-LDHs dispersed better homogeneously and existed more stable than LDHs in bitumen. The physical properties tests indicated that high and low temperature properties of bitumen were improved compared with LDHs. After UV aging with the addition of KH550-LDHs, the increase rate of softening point slowed remarkably, the reduction rate of ductility declined evidently compared with LDHs. Aging indices (softening point increment and ductility retention rate) show that KH550-LDHs exhibited better improvement than LDHs in UV aging resistance of bitumen, implying more effective modification of KH550-LDHs which is due to the enhanced compatibility between KH550-LDHs and bitumen.

The use of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and expanded graphite (EG) as a flame retardant for polymer generally requires a relatively high amount of addition to achieve a flame-retardant effect, and is liable to cause a decrease in strength of the material. Therefore, in this study waste diatomite was used as an eco-friendly flame-retardant for high density polyethylene (HDPE) to reduce the amount of APP and EG and can reach the flame-retardant level. Moreover, the waste diatomite was heat treatment and surface modified by silane coupling agent to improve its compatibility with HDPE. The results show that the tensile strength of the HDPE drops sharply after the addition of the APP and EG. However, replace some of the APP and EG by the modified diatomite can slow down the decline and maintain the basic physical properties of the material. The impact strength of HDPE was also decreased by the addition of APP, EG and untreated diatomite. However, the impact strength of HDPE was increased after adding the surface modified diatomite. It can be seen from the experimental results that the addition of the waste diatomite modified by the silane coupling agent can reduce the usage of the flame retardant such as APP and EG, and increase the strength by increasing the compatibility between the plastic and the inorganic material. Moreover, this eco-friendly formulation can reach the UL-94 HB level, and it can be applied to interior decoration or as building materials in the future. Thus, it can not only recycle the wastes, but also reduce the threat caused by fire.

Silica fillers are well known to improve the mechanical properties of elastomers.Nevertheless, the silica filler particles tend to aggregate and affect the properties of the elastomer. In the present study, the silica filler was modified by silane coupling agent (A-151) in order to improve the dispersion of the filler in silicone rubber. The composites samples added with surface treated silica filler was characterized by FT-IR, bound rubber, and fluorescent microscope with that reinforced by the unmodified filler as a comparison. FT-IR results evidences the successful surface modified by silane coupling agent. Bound rubber contents of the origin silica filler are much lower than that of the silica filler with the silane coupling agent treatment. The modified silica-filled shows a better dispersion than that of the origin silica filler and the agglomeration of filler occurs in the unmodified silica-filler compounds.
