In this paper, magnesium oxychloride cement with stoichiometry 3Mg(OH)2∙MgCl2∙8H2O (MOC 3-1-8) was prepared and characterized. The phase composition and kinetics of formation were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld analysis of obtained diffractograms. The chemical composition was analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study morphology, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was also used for the analysis of the prepared sample. In addition, thermal stability was tested using simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) combined with mass spectroscopy (MS). The obtained data gave evidence of the fast formation of MOC 3-1-8, which started to precipitate rapidly. As the length of the time of ripening increased, the amount of MgO decreased, while the amount of MOC 3-1-8 increased. The fast formation of the MOC 3-1-8 phase at an ambient temperature is important for its application in the production of low-energy construction materials, which corresponds with the challenges of a sustainable building industry.

Kinetics of deformation induced martensitic transformation in metastable austenitic AISI 301 steel was characterized by several techniques including classical light metallography, X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and electron back scattered diffraction. In order to characterize the martensitic transformation, several specimens were tensile pre-deformed to 5%, 10% and 20% of plastic deformation and compared with non-deformed state. During straining, the volume fraction of α’-martensite rapidly prevails over the volume fraction of original austenite and reach the value circa 70%.

Detailed structural properties of La1−xBaxCoO3 (LBCO) have been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld analysis. A structural phase transformation from R3c to Pm3m at x=0.30–0.35 has been detected based on a comparison between the refinements of R3c and Pm3m. The Co–O bond length of the CoO6 octahedron expanded rapidly with increasing Ba content when x<0.1, and then it leveled off and kept constant at 0.1⩽x⩾0.35, where the Co–O–Co bond angle reaches 180°. The Co–O bond length expansion resumed with increasing Ba content beyond x=0.35.

ABSTRACTPt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates seeded by SBT nanoparticles (∼60–80 nm) were used to enhance the phase formation kinetics of Sr0.7Bi2.4Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films. The volume fractions of Aurivillius phase formation obtained through quantitative x-ray diffraction (Q-XRD) analyses showed highly enhanced kinetics in seeded SBT thin films. The Avrami exponents were determined as ∼1.4 and ∼0.9 for unseeded and seeded SBT films, respectively, which reveals different nucleation modes. By using Arrhenius–type plots the activation energy values for the phase transformation of unseeded and seeded SBT thin films were determined to be ∼264 and ∼168 kJ/mol, respectively. This gives a key reason to the enhanced kinetics in seeded films. Microstructural analyses on unseeded SBT thin films showed formation of randomly oriented needle-like crystals, while those on seeded ones showed formation of domains comprised of directionally grown worm-like crystals.

Single-phase samples of La1−xCaxMnO3compounds have been synthesized by solid-state reaction. Detailed Rietveld analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data showed that La1−xCaxMnO3undergoes a structural phase transformation fromR-3ctoPnmaatX=0.05–0.075. There is a linear variation of lattice parameters as a function of calcium concentration. The slope of this linear variation changes atX=0.6. A correlation between observed Mn-O bond lengths, corresponding to different compositions, and possible magnetic phases is discussed.
