Improving Korean Speech Acts Analysis by Using Shrinkage and Discourse Stack

Drawing on speech acts theory, this article discusses the illocutionary and perlocutionary forces of discursive practices with which certain academic circles seek to discredit the Saidian ‘Orientalism’ framework. Identifying the unusual value attached to Said as object of attachment or detachment, desirability and exceptionality, this analysis turns away from deliberations about ‘orientalism’ as a party in a battle of ideas, and studies common cautionary statements and other responses by peers as actions in the social (academic) world, that enculture and police expectations. Cautioning subjects about this framework, or conditioning its employment to preceding extensive pre-emptive complicating mitigations, in effect constructs this framework as undesirable and ‘risky’. While strong discursive reactions are not uncommon in academia, comparing them to treatments of less-controversial social theories reveals formulations, meanings and attentions which are arguably reserved for this ‘theory’. Conclusively, common dismissals, warnings and criticisms of Said and ‘Orientalism’ often exemplify Saidian claims, as they deploy the powerful advantage of enforcing hegemonic, and indeed Orientalist, views.

Over the last three decades, a growing number of studies have investigated the effects of instruction on the acquisition of pragmatic features in L2. The bulk of this research has focused mainly on the teaching of English as a second/foreign language. However, instructional pragmatic studies in L2-Russian are lacking. The main purpose of our study is to contribute towards filling this gap by analysing the effects of pragmatic instruction on the acquisition of two speech acts by Italian learners of Russian. Furthermore, we aim to explore whether the Multimodal Russian Corpus (MURCO), a multimedia subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus, can be an effective tool for teaching speech acts in L2-Russian. Our research was composed of one experimental group (n = 18) and one control group (n = 11); each was composed of two intact classes of Italian university students at an intermediate level of L2-Russian, who were pre- and post-tested using a written discourse completion task. The experimental group was subjected to a programme of pragmatic instruction – eight thirty-minute MURCO-based lessons devoted to requests and advice, while the control group was taught according to the standard syllabus, that is, with no pragmatic instruction. The results revealed that the use of the target pragmatic features varied significantly in the experimental group, but not in the control group, thus showing a general positive effect of the instructional treatment based on the MURCO corpus. However, some limitations were identified with regard to the usability of this tool by teachers and learners.

The objectives of the research were to describe the types of speech acts used in televised political debates of governor candidates of North Sumatera, to derive the dominant type of speech acts used in televised political debates of governor candidates of North Sumatera and to elaborate the way of five governor candidates of North Sumatera use speech acts in televised political debates. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative research. The findings show that there were only four types of speech acts used in televised political debates, Debat Pemilukada Sumatera Utara and Uji Publik Cagub dan Cawagub Sumatera Utara, they were assertives, directives, commissives and expressives. The dominant type of speech acts used in both televised political debates was assertives, with 82 utterances or 51.6% in Debat Pemilukada Sumatera Utara and 36 utterances or 41.37% in Uji Publik Cagub dan Cawagub Sumatera Utara. The way of governor candidates of North Sumatera used speech acts in televised political debates is in direct speech acts, they spoke straight to the point and clearly in order to make the other candidates and audiences understand their utterances. ABSTRACTUnderstanding of art will be complete if it can express a particular value. One source of values in art is the pleasure of its objectivity, which encompasses intrinsic and extrinsic values with aesthetical visualization. The values of implicature in the Srimpi Anglir Mendhung can be found by referring to the expression of verdictive speech acts in its verbal and nonverbal components. In order to study the implicature values contained in Srimpi Anglir Mendhung, the researcher uses a qualitative research methodology based on the theory of pragmatics and theory of performing arts. The strategies used for collecting data are a library study, a study of visual recordings, a study of audio recordings, and interviews. The technique of analysis is interactive and involves the triangulation of data, methodology, and theory. The results of the discussion show that the implicature in the expression of verdictive speech acts in Srimpi Anglir Mendhung is a form of adulation and homage to the noble king, Sultan Agung Hanyakra Kusuma from the Mataram Kingdom. The values of heroism and virtue contained in Srimpi Anglir Mendhung are a reflection of the values of life, which should be emulated and appreciated by the audience and general public.Keywords: implicature, expression of verdictive speech acts, and Srimpi Anglir Mendhung dance. ABSTRAKPemahaman tentang seni terjadi secara lengkap apabila mampu untuk mengungkapkan suatu nilai. Satu sumber nilai seni adalah kenikmatan yang diberikan oleh objektifitas terhadap nilai-nilai instrinsik dan ekstrinsik dengan visualisasi estetis. Merujuk pada ekspresi tindak tutur verdiktif pada komponen verbal dan nonverbal, Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung dapat ditarik implikatur nilainya. Untuk mengkaji implikatur nilai yang terkandung dalam Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung, peneliti menggunakan metodologi penelitian kualitatif dengan berlandaskan teori pragmatik dan teori seni pertunjukan. Strategi pengumpulan data berupa studi pustaka, studi rekaman visual, studi rekaman audio, dan wawancara. Teknik analisisnya bersifat interaktif dengan mentrianggulasikan data, metodologis, dan teori. Hasil pembahasan ditemukan bahwa implikatur ekspresi tindak tutur verdiktif Srimpi Anglir Mendhung merupakan bentuk sanjungan dan penghormatan terhadap raja yang dimuliakan yaitu Sultan Agung Hanyakra Kusuma dari Kerajaan Mataram. Nilai-nilai keprajuritan dan kebajikan yang terkandung dalam Srimpi Anglir Mendhung merupakan cerminan nilai-nilai kehidupan, layak diteladani dan diapresiasi oleh audiens maupun masyarakat luas.Kata kunci: ekspresi, implikatur, Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung, tindak tutur verdiktif

The research entitled Directive Speech Act Seen on Family 2.0 Drama Script Written by Walter Wykes purposes to describe and uncover the types of form and intended meaning of directive speech act on that drama script. This descriptive research uses pragmatic approach and theory. The collecting and analysing data are focused on the using of declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentences in the text of drama. The forms of those sentences will be analysed to find out the types of form of directive speech act, while the context of those sentences will be used to analyze the intended meaning of directive speech act uttered by speakers. The results of the research are found that, first, there are two types of the form of directive speech acts, direct directive speech acts and indirect directive speech acts. Direct directive speech acts are represented by imperative sentence without subject; imperative sentence with let; and negative imperative sentence. Meanwhile the indirect directive speech acts are represented by declarative sentence statement; declarative sentence if clause; negative declarative sentences; and interrogative sentences. Second, the intended meanings seen on drama script of Family 2.0 are command, prohibition, request, treat, and persuasion. It can be concluded that, the most frequent intended meaning appeared in directive speech acts on this script is command by the use of imperative forms. Then, the declarative and interrogative forms are used to request something by adults charaters; in contrast the kids characters use them to command and prohibit the hearer.Keywords: family 2.0, pragmatic, speech act, directive, form and intended meaning
