This study focused on analyzing intrinsic and extrinsic value in “Erin Brockovich” by Susanah Grant. This study aimed to describe a character's utterance that contains intrinsic and extrinsic values in Erin Brockovich's movie script.  There are two sources of data in this study, they are movie scripts from Erin Brockovich's movie as primary data and audiovisual movies as secondary data. Data is collected through Searching and downloading the movie script of Erin Brockovich, reading the script, looking for sentences containing the intrinsic and extrinsic value, taking note of Intrinsic value and extrinsic value, coding the data and rechecking the data. Techniques of Data analysis are done through the presentation of data, explaining and interpreting data, and concluding data. This study indicated that the Erin Brockovich movie script has two values as intrinsic and extrinsic value. First, the intrinsic value is presented in the form of Erin's care to the people at Hinkley. Second, the extrinsic value is presented in the form of PG&E's selfish attitude towards the people at Hinckley. The writer obtained 21 data. 18 intrinsic value data and 3 extrinsic data of intrinsic value found in this movie script meaning that intrinsic value is more dominant than extrinsic value. Intrinsic value is more dominant than the extrinsic value because in this movie script the focus is more on discussing positive actions carried out by the characters in the movie that are helping people by overcoming cases of water pollution.

With the transition toward densely populated and urbanized market-based cultures over the past 200 years, young people’s development has been conditioned by the ascendancy of highly competitive skills-based labor markets that demand new forms of embodied capital (e.g., education) for young people to succeed. Life-history analysis reveals parental shifts toward greater investment in fewer children so parents can invest more in their children’s embodied capital for them to compete successfully. Concomitantly, the evolution of market-based capitalism has been associated with the rise of extrinsic values such as individualism, materialism and status-seeking, which have intensified over the last 40–50 years in consumer economies. The dominance of extrinsic values is consequential: when young people show disproportionate extrinsic relative to intrinsic values there is increased risk for mental health problems and poorer well-being. This paper hypothesizes that, concomitant with the macro-cultural promotion of extrinsic values, young people in advanced capitalism (AC) are obliged to develop an identity that is market-driven and embedded in self-narratives of success, status, and enhanced self-image. The prominence of extrinsic values in AC are synergistic with neuro-maturational and stage-salient developments of adolescence and embodied in prominent market-driven criterion such as physical attractiveness, displays of wealth and material success, and high (educational and extra-curricular) achievements. Cultural transmission of market-driven criterion is facilitated by evolutionary tendencies in young people to learn from older, successful and prestigious individuals (prestige bias) and to copy their peers. The paper concludes with an integrated socio-ecological evolutionary account of market-driven identities in young people, while highlighting methodological challenges that arise when attempting to bridge macro-cultural and individual development.

<p>What would it mean to cultivate a culture of thriving people on a thriving planet? Research has shown that intrinsic values are a significant predictor of both environmentally responsible behaviour and mental wellbeing. However, in modern Western culture, extrinsic, self-promotional values continue to grow in prominence. In order to examine how a specific social context may be exacerbating extrinsic values, counter to mental and ecological wellbeing, this study looks at the social media platform Instagram. Through in-depth interviews of young adults in Aotearoa New Zealand, this study examines their experiences of Instagram in order to ascertain if and how it may promote extrinsic values. Results were analysed through Self Determination Theory, which states that environments which thwart basic human needs of relatedness, competence and autonomy will incentivise extrinsic values. While in some cases, Instagram increased access to relatedness, participants also experienced thwarted relatedness when interactions became motivated predominantly by posting them, and thus self-promoting, on the platform. Participants also consistently reported feeling incompetent when comparing themselves to others' images, which, particularly when adjacent to advertising, as in the case of Instagram, is likely to lead to materialistic tendencies. Participants were also aware of, and in some cases responded to, Instagram signals as to what type of content would gain more 'likes,' adjusting their behaviour in order to succeed in a 'marketplace' infrastructure, thereby limiting autonomy. In doing so, intrinsically motivated experiences were overtaken by an extrinsic desire to portray them to others. These examples indicate Instagram’s infrastructural incentives toward extrinsic values, which counter societal goals of mental and ecological wellbeing. Pervasive messaging within social contexts such as Instagram needs to shift away from promoting extrinsic values in order to respond adequately to the current ecological challenges and create conditions conducive to mental wellbeing.</p>

The purpose of the study was to examine longitudinally how intrinsic and extrinsic values develop during preadolescence within a mother–child context by comparing three different developmental pathways—direct value transmission, indirect value transmission, and value origination. Two hundred and thirty–three Korean mother–child dyads of late elementary students ( Mage = 11.4 years; 55% girls) participated in a year–long online questionnaire survey. A longitudinal structural equation modelling analysis revealed two contrasting developmental pathways for intrinsic and extrinsic values in preadolescents. Intrinsic values developed via value origination, while extrinsic values developed via direct transmission. In other words, intrinsic values originated from the child's own inner psychological experiences and developed in accordance with changes in psychological needs satisfaction, whereas extrinsic values were transmitted from mothers in accordance with the degree to which they endorsed extrinsic values. © 2020 European Association of Personality Psychology

A neo-liberal narrative dominates the cultural value discourse wherein the value of publicly funded art and higher education is increasingly assessed on the basis of extrinsic values. Higher education is expected to contribute to the knowledge economy and the arts to social amelioration, cultural tourism and regeneration. Such an overt focus on the extrinsic values of art and education sidelines their intrinsic values – how they contribute to the common good by promoting collective well-being and sustaining a critical public sphere. Rather than arguing for how their intrinsic values might be marshalled into this neo-liberal value discourse as many cultural analysts continue to do, this article calls for a redefinition of value based on principles of commoning. In place of ‘value’, it looks to the concept of ‘social wealth’, which is created by radical experiments in producing the commons. It considers how ‘art institutions of the common’ and ‘universities of the common’ that have emerged in recent years are producing forms of social wealth that offer a viable alternative to the neo-liberal discourse of value.

The large news newspaper and media corporation previously provides long-term and stable career for journalist to move up on the career path from junior reporter to become editor in chief. Maslow's hierarchy of needs has been used as the motivation paradigm to fulfil every stage of needs from physiological needs to the highest form of self-actualization needs. However, when the change of media market employment relationship and social media as the main focus of news content, more large media corporation uses contracted freelance journalist with expertise in their particular field as as finance, politics, sports, horse racing, travel, dine and wine as content contributor. The relationship between news corporation and journalist has changed from employment to partnership. Therefore, it remains in doubt whether Maslow's hierarchy of needs still hold for staff management in today media industry.In addition, freelance journalist is himself a KOL and expert in their field and their follower helps the media platform increase the readership and click rate which translates into increasing their advertising revenue. As such, there is psychological contract which consists of intrinsic (Pay) and extrinsic values (other factors) and different expectation from both party on this employment contract in this new form of partnership.The aim of this paper is to examine from freelance journalists point of view whether Maslow's hierarchy of needs applies on them and what are the extrinsic values which hold them on this employment relationship with media corporation.

ABSTRACTUnderstanding of art will be complete if it can express a particular value. One source of values in art is the pleasure of its objectivity, which encompasses intrinsic and extrinsic values with aesthetical visualization. The values of implicature in the Srimpi Anglir Mendhung can be found by referring to the expression of verdictive speech acts in its verbal and nonverbal components. In order to study the implicature values contained in Srimpi Anglir Mendhung, the researcher uses a qualitative research methodology based on the theory of pragmatics and theory of performing arts. The strategies used for collecting data are a library study, a study of visual recordings, a study of audio recordings, and interviews. The technique of analysis is interactive and involves the triangulation of data, methodology, and theory. The results of the discussion show that the implicature in the expression of verdictive speech acts in Srimpi Anglir Mendhung is a form of adulation and homage to the noble king, Sultan Agung Hanyakra Kusuma from the Mataram Kingdom. The values of heroism and virtue contained in Srimpi Anglir Mendhung are a reflection of the values of life, which should be emulated and appreciated by the audience and general public.Keywords: implicature, expression of verdictive speech acts, and Srimpi Anglir Mendhung dance. ABSTRAKPemahaman tentang seni terjadi secara lengkap apabila mampu untuk mengungkapkan suatu nilai. Satu sumber nilai seni adalah kenikmatan yang diberikan oleh objektifitas terhadap nilai-nilai instrinsik dan ekstrinsik dengan visualisasi estetis. Merujuk pada ekspresi tindak tutur verdiktif pada komponen verbal dan nonverbal, Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung dapat ditarik implikatur nilainya. Untuk mengkaji implikatur nilai yang terkandung dalam Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung, peneliti menggunakan metodologi penelitian kualitatif dengan berlandaskan teori pragmatik dan teori seni pertunjukan. Strategi pengumpulan data berupa studi pustaka, studi rekaman visual, studi rekaman audio, dan wawancara. Teknik analisisnya bersifat interaktif dengan mentrianggulasikan data, metodologis, dan teori. Hasil pembahasan ditemukan bahwa implikatur ekspresi tindak tutur verdiktif Srimpi Anglir Mendhung merupakan bentuk sanjungan dan penghormatan terhadap raja yang dimuliakan yaitu Sultan Agung Hanyakra Kusuma dari Kerajaan Mataram. Nilai-nilai keprajuritan dan kebajikan yang terkandung dalam Srimpi Anglir Mendhung merupakan cerminan nilai-nilai kehidupan, layak diteladani dan diapresiasi oleh audiens maupun masyarakat luas.Kata kunci: ekspresi, implikatur, Tari Srimpi Anglir Mendhung, tindak tutur verdiktif
