Pilot plant experiments have been performed over a period of four years in order to establish an experimental basis for the upgrading of the treatment plants of the city of Copenhagen to nitrogen removal. The design chosen is based on the alternating mode of operation. Nitrification rates have been determined in batch tests on activated sludge extracted from the pilot plants and through the measuring of transient concentrations during the alternating mode of operation in the aerobic reactor. The data have been nonnalised to standard conditions by correcting them according to the kinetic theory. By monitoring the normalised nitrification rate it could be established that the nitrification process was occasionally inhibited. The aerobic sludge age required to maintain nitrification has been estimated. A specific evaluation has been made of the sensitivity of the required sludge age to the oxygen concentration and temperature.

AbstractEpigenetics has become a promising field for finding new biomarkers and improving diagnosis, prognosis, and drug response in inflammatory bowel disease. The number of people suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases, especially Crohn's disease, has increased remarkably. Crohn's disease is assumed to be the result of a complex interplay between genetic susceptibility, environmental factors, and altered intestinal microbiota, leading to dysregulation of the innate and adaptive immune response. While many genetic variants have been identified to be associated with Crohn's disease, less is known about the influence of epigenetics in the pathogenesis of this disease. In this review, we provide an overview of current epigenetic studies in Crohn's disease. In particular, we enable a deeper insight into applied bioanalytical and computational tools, as well as a comprehensive update toward the cell-specific evaluation of DNA methylation and histone modifications.

Background Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is a disorder of nasal polyposis, asthma, and hypersensitivity respiratory reactions when on systemic cyclooxygenase 1 blockade. Methods AERD Warrants Specific Evaluation As An Endotype Of Asthma And Chronic Sinus Disease Due To Unique Therapeutic Opportunities. Currently, Aspirin Therapy Is Uniquely Beneficial As An Anti-Inflammatory Therapy In Aerd, With Multiple Additional Therapies Currently In Early To Late Clinical Studies, Which Might Also Show Exceptional Benefit In AERD. Results Yet, given the lack of a simple diagnostic test, opportunities to identify patients with AERD are still frequently neglected. Conclusion Identifying the prevalence and population characteristics necessary to determine appropriate candidates in whom to perform diagnostic aspirin challenge remains critically important and was the purpose of this article.

Web enables to retrieve concise information about specific entities including people, organizations, movies and their features. Additionally, large amount of Web resources generally lies on a unstructured form and it tackles to find critical information for specific entities. Text analysis approaches such as Named Entity Recognizer and Entity Linking aim to identify entities and link them to relevant entities in the given knowledge base. To evaluate these approaches, there are a vast amount of general purpose benchmark datasets. However, it is difficult to evaluate domain-specific approaches due to lack of evaluation datasets for specific domains. This study presents WeDGeM that is a multilingual evaluation set generator for specific domains exploiting Wikipedia category pages and DBpedia hierarchy. Also, Wikipedia disambiguation pages are used to adjust the ambiguity level of the generated texts. Based on this generated test data, a use case for well-known Entity Linking systems supporting Turkish texts are evaluated in the movie domain.

AbstractThe present paper deals with the elaboration of a methodology to assess the macro-seismic risk of monumental historical buildings, representing a fundamental part of the European cultural assets. Monumental buildings typically arise from a very complex constructive and morphological evolution process characterised by modifications occurred over the centuries. Therefore, they are usually heterogeneous buildings similar to 'structural aggregates' rather than single constructions and characterised by a structural behaviour depending on the mutual interaction of different structural units. An accurate knowledge process can allow the determination of structural units within the complex: such units can be therefore analysed using a specific evaluation form conceived to provide a 'risk ranking' of the different portions constituting the aggregate and accounting for vulnerability, exposure and seismic hazard parameters. The proposed methodology exploits what is already used to quickly determine structural features and eventual damages in the post-earthquake phase for ordinary buildings, introducing specific aspects typical of historical-cultural heritage requiring attention. According to the results achieved, retrofit interventions or deepen investigations can be planned for units provided by a higher position in the risk scale, optimising and rationally planning the use of available economic and time resources. In the present work, the proposed methodology is applied to the monumental complex of the Certosa di Calci, Pisa (Italy).

Abstract We describe an HPLC ion-pair procedure for rapid and specific evaluation of creatinine in serum and urine. We used a 15 cm X 4.6 mm ODS column with a 50/50 (by vol) mixture of sodium decanesulfonic acid (10 mmol/L, pH 3.2) and methanol and measured absorbance at 236 nm. Serum (100 microL) or 30-fold-diluted urine (100 microL) was added to 400 microL of acetone. After centrifugation, the supernates (300 microL) were dried, reconstituted with the mobile phase, and injected into the HPLC. Assay precision was tested for concentrations of 10, 29, and 130 mg/L and yielded, respectively, 3.1%, 2.1%, and 1.1% for within-day CV and 2.8%, 2.1%, and 2.2% for total CV. Analytical recovery was 102 (+/- 6.7%). Linearity was demonstrated in the 0-200 mg/L range for serum and 0-3.5 g/L range for urine (r greater than or equal to 0.999). The detection limit for creatinine (signal-to-noise ratio = 3) was 0.5 mg/L. We used cimetidine for internal standardization. Correlation was good between this procedure and the Jaffé kinetic, the enzymatic (creatinine amidohydrolase), and the Fuller's earth alkaline picrate methods.

Introduction: Stress at work is a factor that has repercussions on both a personal and health level, as well as on productivity at work. Objective: To establish if the wearables are devices capable of determining the level of labor stress of working people in a research center. Methodology: This pilot study followed up different variables during 6 months on 11 participants of a research center. In the study, wearables Xiaomi MiB and 3 were used, which recorded and continuously monitored the physical activity and sleep of the participants. On the other hand, different specific evaluation tests were used to measure work stress, quality of life and sleep quality. Results: The data obtained from the tests and the wearables show that men feel slightly more stressed and sleep worse than women; however, men spend more time sitting and walking than women. Conclusions: It is considered important to replicate the study in larger and more heterogeneous cohorts.

Evaluating a reference model is a demanding task. Not only that reference models inherit the problems well known from the evaluation of conceptual models in general. Furthermore, their claim for general (re-) usability implies to take into account the possible variety of requirements and specific constraints within the set of potential applications. This chapter presents a method that is aimed at fostering a differentiated and balanced judgement of reference models. For this purpose, it takes into account various perspectives - among others an economic, an engineering and an epistemological perspective. It also includes a process model that demonstrates how to organize a specific evaluation project.
