While Wood and Flinders’ work to broaden the scope of what counts as “politics” in political science is a needed adjustment to conventional theory, it skirts an important relationship between society, the protopolitical sphere, and arena politics. We contend, in particular, that the language of everyday people articulates tensions in society, that such tensions are particularly observable online, and that this language can constitute the beginning of political action. Language can be protopolitical and should, therefore, be included in the authors’ revised theory of what counts as political participation.

This study provides a stimulating critique of contemporary evolutionary thought, analyzing the Modern Synthesis first developed by Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, and George Gaylord Simpson. The author argues that although only genes and organisms are taken as historic "individuals" in conventional theory, species, higher taxa, and ecological entities such as populations and communities should also be construed as individuals--an approach that yields the ecological and genealogical hierarchies that interact to produce evolution. This clearly stated, controversial work will provoke much debate among evolutionary biologists, systematists, paleontologists, and ecologists, as well as a wide range of educated lay readers.

AbstractMany experiments investigating magnetic-field tuned superconductor-insulator transition (H-SIT) often exhibit low-temperature resistance saturation, which is interpreted as an anomalous metallic phase emerging from a ‘failed superconductor’, thus challenging conventional theory. Here we study a random granular array of indium islands grown on a gateable layer of indium-oxide. By tuning the intergrain couplings, we reveal a wide range of magnetic fields where resistance saturation is observed, under conditions of careful electromagnetic filtering and within a wide range of linear response. Exposure to external broadband noise or microwave radiation is shown to strengthen the tendency of superconductivity, where at low field a global superconducting phase is restored. Increasing magnetic field unveils an ‘avoided H-SIT’ that exhibits granularity-induced logarithmic divergence of the resistance/conductance above/below that transition, pointing to possible vestiges of the original emergent duality observed in a true H-SIT. We conclude that anomalous metallic phase is intimately associated with inherent inhomogeneities, exhibiting robust behavior at attainable temperatures for strongly granular two-dimensional systems.

Many experiments show features of the Raman spectrum at variance with the predictions of conventional theory. One persistent discrepancy, the cut-off in the spectrum of scattered light at about 1·5λ0, led Simon and Short to postulate that the scattered spectrum is not Raman light as such, but derives from enhanced Thomson scattering from plasmas in which a population of suprathermal electrons is present. We describe a set of simulations which model the propagation of a light wave through a plasma characterized by two electron temperatures with the hot electron fraction varying between 0 and 0·05. The results show that enhanced Thomson scattering will contribute to the spectra observed in some experiments at least and confirm the contention that the spectrum of the scattered light is not especially sensitive to the width of the suprathermal electron feature. We have also examined the effect of a finite quiver velocity on the enhanced Thomson spectrum as a function of the population of suprathermal electrons, in particular its effect on the wavelength bands.


The 90° cross-section of the reaction 3 1 H( d , n ) 4 2 He has been investigated over the energy range 100 to 200 keV (energy of bombarding triton) using the 200 keV accelerating set of the establishment. Two methods have been used. As a preliminary experiment the yield of alpha-particles from a thick heavy-ice target was measured per unit charge of incident beam, as a function of deuteron energy, and the variation of cross-section deduced from the gradient of this excitation curve and the range energy relation for tritons in heavy water. Secondly, a comparison was made between the yield of alpha-particles from the D-T reaction and the yield of protons from the D-D reaction when a beam containing both deuterons and tritons was passed through a heavy-water vapour target. (The energy loss in this target was calculated as only a few hundred electron volts.) To do this a simultaneous observation was made of the protons and alpha-particles using the same counter. The values obtained for the cross-section have been compared with the resonance formulae given by Bretscher & French (1949) and by Tascbek, Everhart, Gittings, Hemmendinger & Jarvis (1948) and have been found to be in disagreement with formulae of this type. From considerations of the absolute magnitude of the cross-section it has been deduced that no conventional theory postulating reaction at a distance equal to the sum of the nuclear radii (cf. Konopinski & Teller 1948) will be able to explain this reaction. The evidence for a low-energy resonance (Allan & Poole 1949) is thought to be inconclusive.

The time value of money is a basic investment concept and a basic element in the conventional theory of finance. The Shari`ah does not rule out this consideration, for it does not prohibit any increment in a loan given to cover the price of a commodity in any sale contract to be paid at a future date. What is prohibited, however, is making money’s time value an element of any lending relationship that considers it to have a predetermined value. Here, the Shari`ah requires that a loan be due in the same currency in which it was given. The value (i.e., purchasing power) of paper currencies varies due to changes in many variables over which the two parties of a loan contract usually have no control. This study examines possible modus operandi of time valuation according to the Shari`ah’s precepts vis-à-vis the concept of money, and whether any value can be attributed to time while considering money’s value. For this purpose, it investigates the juristic views on such relevant issues as the permissibility of difference between a commodity’s cash and credit prices and an increase and reduction of the loan’s amount in return for early repayment.

AbstractConventional theory explains the origin of carbon stars as due to dredge up of carbon enriched material from the stellar core during helium flash events late in the life of solar mass AGB stars (e.g. Boothroyd and Sackmann 1988). This relatively efficient process however, seems to produce a larger C/O ratio than observed (Lambert et al. 1987). A secondary effect which could contribute to the appearance of carbon stars, is the selective removal of oxygen from the atmosphere by radiative force expulsion of oxygen rich dust grains (e.g. silicates like [Mg, Fe2SiO4]). We present calculations for this scenario which evaluate the degree of momentum coupling between the grains and gas under the thermodynamical conditions of AGB star atmospheres.

Insulin increased resting membrane potential of excised rat muscle, extensor digitorum longus, by about 5 mv in less than 1 hour. In 1 hour insulin caused no increase in the ratio of intra- to extracellular potassium, but in 2–3 hours intracellular K increased by about 10%. It is concluded that the increase in intracellular K is probably too small and too late to account for the hyperpolarization on the basis of conventional theory and it is suggested that the hyperpolarization produced by insulin is the cause of the potassium shift.
