ABSTRACT In today’s competitive higher education environment in Vietnam, higher education institutions have focussed more on quality education services to improve students’ satisfaction, which is considered an important factor for attracting and retaining students and evaluating the success of these higher education institutions, as a result. This research aimed to examine Vietnamese students’ perceptions about the quality of education services offered at Hue University in Vietnam. The data were obtained from the questionnaires completed by 2933 students from four-university members of Hue University in Central Vietnam. The research results showed that the students were generally satisfied with the quality of education services provided by Hue University. In addition, students’ satisfaction at Hue University is most affected by their perceptions about access to education services and the educational environment. The study also provided several implications, for Hue University in particular and other Vietnamese higher education institutions in general, to enhance their education services to improve the level of education service quality for attracting and retaining students.

This work describes an analysis of the implementation of quality methodologies that generated an improvement in the research, development and teaching activities of the Engineering Institute of Autonomous University of Baja California (EI-AUBC), located in the city of Mexicali. These methodologies are widely used in the industrial sector to prevent accidents, reduce waste, and eliminate rework and to training of workers in any area in the industries. Only that its applications are very little known in the Laboratories of Higher Education Institutions (LHEI) of the Mexican Republic. With this scientific study the results of the investigation activities were more reliability to be take adequate decisions and were made functions with more security taking care of health of researchers and students. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the strategic management of Vietnamese higher education institutions. Design/methodology/approach The paper examined the external environment of the country’s education system based on the five forces framework by Michael Porter and inspected the strategies of universities and colleges. Findings It was concluded that lack of environmental analysis from both the government and higher education institutions themselves diminishes the intended effectiveness of the reforms; problems of skill shortage in the labor market, staff insufficiency and poor quality are prevalent; and that strategies developed by the institutions are purely responsive to the State’s direction without considering sustainability. Research limitations/implications Lack of literature on Vietnamese higher education limits timely analysis. Practical implications Strategic planning based on a thorough investigation of the environment is imperative to enhance the performance of the education system generally as well as of academic institutions individually. The government plays a key role in developing initiatives to enhance staff capabilities and improve quality of educational outputs. Originality/value There has not been any paper that approached Vietnam’s higher education management under such an analytical framework.

Knowledge management is a valuable antecedent in enhancing the competitive advantage and sustainability of an organization. Various quality management standards acknowledge the necessities and importance of knowledge management within quality management since both areas complement each other. Therefore, this state drives the need to conduct more knowledge management research related to quality management. However, research on knowledge management within quality management systems specifically in higher education institutions is still underexplored. This chapter attempts to explore the establishment of a knowledge management model in supporting the implementation of quality management standards. Several knowledge management enabler factors are suggested, namely strategic focus and leadership, culture, organization, structure, technology, processes, top management, measurement, knowledge, and people. An empirical study is suggested in the future to further support the conceptual knowledge management model established in this chapter.
