ABSTRACT In today’s competitive higher education environment in Vietnam, higher education institutions have focussed more on quality education services to improve students’ satisfaction, which is considered an important factor for attracting and retaining students and evaluating the success of these higher education institutions, as a result. This research aimed to examine Vietnamese students’ perceptions about the quality of education services offered at Hue University in Vietnam. The data were obtained from the questionnaires completed by 2933 students from four-university members of Hue University in Central Vietnam. The research results showed that the students were generally satisfied with the quality of education services provided by Hue University. In addition, students’ satisfaction at Hue University is most affected by their perceptions about access to education services and the educational environment. The study also provided several implications, for Hue University in particular and other Vietnamese higher education institutions in general, to enhance their education services to improve the level of education service quality for attracting and retaining students.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the strategic management of Vietnamese higher education institutions. Design/methodology/approach The paper examined the external environment of the country’s education system based on the five forces framework by Michael Porter and inspected the strategies of universities and colleges. Findings It was concluded that lack of environmental analysis from both the government and higher education institutions themselves diminishes the intended effectiveness of the reforms; problems of skill shortage in the labor market, staff insufficiency and poor quality are prevalent; and that strategies developed by the institutions are purely responsive to the State’s direction without considering sustainability. Research limitations/implications Lack of literature on Vietnamese higher education limits timely analysis. Practical implications Strategic planning based on a thorough investigation of the environment is imperative to enhance the performance of the education system generally as well as of academic institutions individually. The government plays a key role in developing initiatives to enhance staff capabilities and improve quality of educational outputs. Originality/value There has not been any paper that approached Vietnam’s higher education management under such an analytical framework.

This article aims to provide the selected findings of self-directed learning readiness assessment to undergraduate students in various countries. It also offers relevant recommendations for promoting self-directed learning to Vietnamese higher education institutions. Through desk study by analyzing articles and studies of self-directed study readiness assessment, the result shows that the level of self-direct learning readiness among undergraduate students is different due to the influence of mental, social and demographic variables. Some practical recommendations for higher education institutions, students, teachers and researchers are proposed to promote self-directed learning. It is expected that this study will partly contribute to promote the students’ initiative and creativity in learning associated with lifelong learning.

Higher education is a form of a merit good. This is why governments usually support the delivery of this good. However, one could doubt the efficiency of such solution. How well do public higher education institutions (HEIs) do their job? How to measure their performance? This paper discusses these issues. First, we discuss the problem of defining and measuring efficiency in the case of publicly held HEIs with particular emphasis put on the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. Secondly, we present the results of our empirical investigation of efficiency assessed using the DEA method conducted on the sample of 33 Poland faculties specialized in social sciences . We use Charnes-Cooper-Rhodes (CCR) output oriented model with two inputs and three outputs. Next, we present some important differences in efficiency of those faculties. We also define benchmarks for inefficient HEIs and quantify the gaps to be fulfilled by them in order to become efficient. Finally, we pinpoint the directions of further research.

After more than three decades of implementing the Doi Moi policy, Vietnam’s higher education has achieved significant progress, in terms of policies of national reform and strategies of international cooperation. However, the role and position of higher education institutions in the world’s education market are still blurry. Although a number of researchers have highlighted a range of impediments to its development, realistic solutions have not been devised to help Vietnam accelerate its progress in education. The main objectives of this paper are to review reform in government policies pertaining to the development of the higher education sector, discuss the performance efficiency of higher education institutions using statistical analyses based on the findings from recent studies, and propose possible solutions for enhancing performance efficiency and accountability transparency of higher education institutions in the process of the comprehensive renovation of the Vietnamese higher education system

The article estimates the efficiency of 59 public higher education institutions in Poland in rising of funds for didactic and scientific activity in 2015 using nonparametric DEA method. We used output-oriented BCC model. The work also uses the subsampling procedure to assess the accuracy of the previously performed efficiency measurement. Twelve universities turned out to be fully efficient in the above-mentioned scope, while the average efficiency is quite high and close to the median.
