Prompt cooling to remove field heat is an essential part of proper postharvest handling for many types of fresh fruits and vegetables. Growers, consultants, and horticultural agents are often encouraged to collect cooling data (time vs. temperature) in order to compare cooling rates for different systems, containers, etc. These data can be misleading and confusing and seldom yield much useful information. With proper analysis, cooling data can yield a large amount of information. The problem is not the fault of the data, as much as the lack of simple methods to analyze these data. This presentation will demonstrate several simple methods to extract useful information from cooling data.

A fluid inclusion petrographic and microthermometric study was performed on the sandstones gathered from the Yanchang Formation, Jiyuan area of the Ordos Basin. Four types of fluid inclusions in quartz can be recognized based on the location they entrapped. The petrographic characteristics indicate that fluid inclusions in quartz overgrowth and quartz fissuring-I were trapped earlier than that in quartz fissuring-IIa and fissuring-IIb. The homogenization temperature values of the earlier fluid inclusions aggregate around 80 to 90°C; exclusively, it is slightly higher in Chang 6 member, which approaches 95°C. The later fluid inclusions demonstrate high homogenization temperatures, which range from 100 to 115°C, and the temperatures are slightly higher in Chang 9 member. The calculated salinities show differences between each member, including their regression characteristics with burial depth. Combining with the vitrinite reflection data, the sequence and parameters of fluid inclusions indicate that the thermal history of the Yanchang formation mostly relied on burial. Salinity changes were associated with fluid-rock interaction or fluid interruption. Hydrocarbon contained fluid inclusions imply that hydrocarbon generation and migration occurred in the Early Cretaceous. The occurrence of late fluid inclusions implied that quartz cement is a reservoir porosity-loose factor.

AbstractThe complex thermal cycles and temperature distributions observed in additive manufacturing (AM) are of particular interest as these define the microstructure and the associated properties of the part being built. Due to the intrinsic, layer-by-layer material stacking performed, contact methods to measure temperature are not suitable, and contactless methods need to be considered. Contactless infrared irradiation techniques were applied by carrying out thermal imaging and point measurement methods using pyrometers to determine the spatial and temporal temperature distribution in wire-based electron beam AM. Due to the vacuum, additional challenges such as element evaporation must be overcome and additional shielding measures were taken to avoid interference with the contactless techniques. The emissivities were calibrated by thermocouple readings and geometric boundary conditions. Thermal cycles and temperature profiles were recorded during deposition; the temperature gradients are described and the associated temperature transients are derived. In the temperature range of the α+β field, the cooling rates fall within the range of 180 to 350 °C/s, and the microstructural characterisation indicates an associated expected transformation of β→α'+α with corresponding cooling rates. Fine acicular α and α’ formed and local misorientation was observed within α as a result of the temperature gradient and the formation of the α’.

AbstractThe elasto-plastic material behavior, material strength and failure modes of metals fabricated by additive manufacturing technologies are significantly determined by the underlying process-specific microstructure evolution. In this work a novel physics-based and data-supported phenomenological microstructure model for Ti-6Al-4V is proposed that is suitable for the part-scale simulation of laser powder bed fusion processes. The model predicts spatially homogenized phase fractions of the most relevant microstructural species, namely the stable $$\beta $$ β -phase, the stable $$\alpha _{\text {s}}$$ α s -phase as well as the metastable Martensite $$\alpha _{\text {m}}$$ α m -phase, in a physically consistent manner. In particular, the modeled microstructure evolution, in form of diffusion-based and non-diffusional transformations, is a pure consequence of energy and mobility competitions among the different species, without the need for heuristic transformation criteria as often applied in existing models. The mathematically consistent formulation of the evolution equations in rate form renders the model suitable for the practically relevant scenario of temperature- or time-dependent diffusion coefficients, arbitrary temperature profiles, and multiple coexisting phases. Due to its physically motivated foundation, the proposed model requires only a minimal number of free parameters, which are determined in an inverse identification process considering a broad experimental data basis in form of time-temperature transformation diagrams. Subsequently, the predictive ability of the model is demonstrated by means of continuous cooling transformation diagrams, showing that experimentally observed characteristics such as critical cooling rates emerge naturally from the proposed microstructure model, instead of being enforced as heuristic transformation criteria. Eventually, the proposed model is exploited to predict the microstructure evolution for a realistic selective laser melting application scenario and for the cooling/quenching process of a Ti-6Al-4V cube of practically relevant size. Numerical results confirm experimental observations that Martensite is the dominating microstructure species in regimes of high cooling rates, e.g., due to highly localized heat sources or in near-surface domains, while a proper manipulation of the temperature field, e.g., by preheating the base-plate in selective laser melting, can suppress the formation of this metastable phase.

Microstructural optimization of Al-Li alloys plays a key role in the adjustment of mechanical properties as well as corrosion behavior. In this work, Al-5Cu-1Li-0.6Mg-0.5Ag-0.5Mn alloy was homogenized at different temperatures and holding times, followed by aging treatment. The microstructure and composition of the homogenized alloys and aged alloys were investigated. There were Al7Cu4Li phase, Al3Li phase, and Al2CuLi phases in the homogenized alloys. The Al7Cu4Li phase was dissolved with an increase in homogenization temperature and holding time. Al2Cu phase and Al2CuLi phase coarsened during the homogenization process. The alloy homogenized at 515 °C for 20 h was subjected to a two-stage aging treatment. Peak-age alloy, which had gone through age treatment at 120 °C for 4 h and 180 °C for 6 h, was mainly composed of α-Al, Al20Cu2Mn3, Al2CuLi, Al2Cu, and Al3Li phases. Tafel polarization of the peak-age alloys revealed the corrosion potential and corrosion current density to be −779 mV and 2.979 μA/cm2, respectively. The over-age alloy had a more positive corrosion potential of −658 mV but presented a higher corrosion current of 6.929 μA/cm2.
