We aimed to contribute to a shift in higher education teaching and learning methods by considering problem-based learning (PBL) as an approach capable of positively affecting students from a geology and environment (GE) curricular unit. In a convenience sample from a Portuguese public university, two groups of students were defined: (1) an experimental group (n = 16), to which an intervention program (IP) based on PBL was applied, and (2) a comparison group (n = 17), subjected to the traditional teaching approach. For nine weeks, students subject to the IP faced four problem scenarios about different themes. A triangulation of methods was chosen. The study involved two phases: (1) qualitative (sustained on content analysis of driving questions raised by students, registered in a monitoring sheet) and (2) quantitative (quasi-experimental study, based on data from a prior and post-test knowledge assessment). The qualitative results point to the development of more complex cognitive-level questioning skills after increasing familiarity with PBL. The data obtained in the quantitative study, which included both a “within-subjects” and a “between-subjects” design, show higher benefits in the experimental group, documenting gains in terms of scientific knowledge when using the PBL methodology.

The technologies themselves cannot be analyzed as instruments per se, nor can they be exhausted in their relation with science. There is a social and even an individual dimension that affects our own way of relating to society. It is in open education that we have been developing our educational practices. This chapter presents a collaborative learning activity, the curricular unit Materiais e Recursos para eLearning, part of an on-line Master in Pedagogy of eLearning, Universidade Aberta, Portugal. In the present work, the authors dedicate their attention to co-learning and co-research, as processes that help to exemplify some situations, the a-REAeduca. The data collection was supported essentially by the content analysis technique.

The present article discusses the problem of development of students’ professional orientation. The article presents an author’s complex of pedagogical conditions that facilitate students’ professional development in institution of higher learning. The complex embraces the following: revelation and formation of students’ values; creation of an educational environment in an institute of higher education that promotes self-realization of an individual; consideration of the subject experience of students; development of pedagogical abilities of future teachers; development of professional skills of university teachers as the basis for formation of professional orientation. Moreover, the article describes the results of experimental work which has confirmed the effectiveness of the developed complex of pedagogical conditions that ensure the development of students’ professional orientation in an institute of higher education based on personality orientation of academic work.

This article presents trends and directions for language teaching instructors, especially in higher education. The objectives of this paper were to investigate the satisfaction of implementation of MOOCs in language teaching and to illustrate the change caused by disruptive technologies effected on behaviors and methods of language teaching-learning process. Due to Covid-19, the pandemic has shown a remarkably dramatic impact on Higher education. The term disruptive technology for e-Learning, therefore, become a common trend in educational system around the world with the rapid transition from traditional classes to online learning systems. Therefore, a robust and implemented approach aimed on improving and empowering the university staff should be created and developed to achieve the highest effectiveness of students’ learning process.In this study, the theory of teaching-learning activity pedagogy and trends in language learning are being proposed. These theories explain and provide conceptual frameworks for Higher Education (HE) to clearly see the interactions and consequences of the new educational paradigm according to disruptive innovation.

O nosso trabalho pretende descrever o processo de desenho e implementação de objetos de aprendizagem orientados para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de resolução de problemas, numa escola superior do ensino politécnico português. Com a apresentação de um caso prático, demonstramos a utilização de um objeto de aprendizagem elaborado no âmbito de uma unidade curricular de Informática e Sistemas de Informação de um curso de licenciatura na área da Saúde, cuja metodologia de implementação se baseou na Problem Based Learning. Previous research has emphasized both the importance of giving and receiving peer feedback for the purpose of active learning, as well as of university students’ engagement in reflection to improve learning outcomes. However, requiring students to explicitly reflect on peer reviewing is an understudied learning activity in higher education that may contribute to the utilization of peer-feedback and promote further learning. In this study, we suggest reflection on peer reviewing as one approach to providing a platform for students to engage in reflective practices and for stimulating active learning in higher education, and to make that learning visible to the educator. We examine 26 undergraduate students’ reflections on peer-review to identify categories of reflection and what students have learnt from the peer reviewing process. Our findings reveal six different categories of reflection suggesting students’ active engagement in learning and pointing to the ways educators can direct and instruct students how to reflect. We discuss how these findings can inform university lecturers in the use of reflection upon peer reviewing as a pedagogical tool in higher education.
