Validating teaching competencies for faculty members in higher education: A national study using the Delphi method

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly shifted education from traditional to an online version, which was an emergent state for teachers and students. The substantive situation thus raises the importance of technology integration in education, and teachers are required to update their competencies, respectively. In this regard, the study assessed online teaching competencies of faculty members following, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) model. Closed-ended surveys were employed for quantitative analysis of randomly selected 256 faculty members from public universities in Karachi, Pakistan. Results indicated that teachers possessed adequate levels of knowledge across all the domains of TPACK. The highest competency was obtained by content knowledge (CK), while technological knowledge (TK) was reported at the lowest level. Furthermore, a significant difference was noted in terms of gender and teaching experience. Correspondingly, the study proposes that the TPACK model should be employed in the professional development programs to develop teachers’ TPACK for integrating information communication and technology in the pedagogical practices. The findings of the study present a constructive overview of teachers’ digital competencies and technology use in teaching and learning in the time of the COVID-19 and also play a significant role in the integration of technology in the post-pandemic time in higher education. The study also suggests relevant educational authorities and policymakers for assessing and enhancing the technological competencies of teachers for quality online education.

Ensure that from the above theoretical review on administrative context and employee productivity in higher education and there is a positive association between work engagement of faculty members and administrative staff motivate the employees in accomplishing their work regardless of any result that they are more productive. Researchers argue the fact that the physical environment of the institutional and administrative, employees effect job perception attitudes and job satisfaction which is in sequence affects the job performance and employee productivity. Improving the work environment in higher educational institution there is a dissatisfaction and complaints of employee while increasing their productivity the more satisfied employee are with their jobs in high performance and productivity.

Leadership Style has been since long acknowledged by management scholars as being an important subject in relation to organizational executions and outcome. An effective leadership would not only be able to prevent job stress and burnout among group members, but would also be successful in enhancing the motivation and engagement of the employees. It has been widely accepted that operational excellence in an organization can only be maintained through engaged employees. In this study the researchers have strived to enhance the understanding of the complex relationship between the organic leadership style and the engagement level of the employees and to further comprehend the mediating role of social relevance of work in association of the two constructs i.e. leadership style and employee engagement, in context of faculty members in higher education sector.

BACKGROUND Otitis media (OM) is a very common childhood problem. It is inflammation of the middle ear usually caused by viral or bacterial infection. Otitis media is a main cause of antibiotic use in children. The primary treatment for acute otitis media (AOM) is watchful waiting: 80% of cases resolve without intervention. Southeast Asia, the Western Pacific region, and Africa have the highest prevalence of OM. Prevalence studies on OM are scant in Saudi Arabia. Only a few studies have been conducted in some cities. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and health-seeking practices of parents with regard to OM. METHODS A national study was conducted September 19, 2018–October 9, 2018 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using an electronic online questionnaire. It was culturally adopted, validated, and translated into Arabic. Items on the questionnaire included demographics, knowledge, attitude, and health practices about ear infection among parents of children <5 years old. The calculated representative sample size of the Saudi population was 9600 individuals (95% confidence interval and 1% margin of error). The aim was for 10,000 responses. Stratified sampling was used with each administrative area considered as independent strata. Statistical analysis was conducted using Excel software (Microsoft, Redmond, WA). Data were coded, grouped, arranged, and cleaned. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 23.0; Armonk, NY: IBM Corporation) was used for data analysis. RESULTS This study included 10,004 participants. Most were females. The mean age was 37.93 years (standard deviation, 10.20 years). Overall, 81.9% of parents were knowledgeable about ear infection. Parents who were knowledgeable about ear infections were significantly older (P = .005), female (P < .001), had a higher education level (P < .001), were married (P < .001), had a monthly income of 10,000–20,000 Saudi riyals (P < .001), and lived in the Al-Baha region (P < .001). The scores of 90.0% of parents indicated they had a good attitude about ear infection; and 58.6% of parents believed that ignorance is why children do not go to a healthcare facility for ear infection treatment. Parents with positive overall health practices represent 81.2%. Parents with good health practices were significantly associated with female sex (P = .009), higher education level (P < .001), being married (P < .001), a monthly income of 5000–1000 Saudi riyals (SR; P < .001), and living in the Al-Baha region (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Knowledge, attitude, and health-seeking practices in Saudi Arabia were overall adequate. However, more integrated educational materials are needed for the general population. The development of a broad national awareness program, especially in low socioeconomic areas, could significantly contribute to the early detection and management of OM.

One of the great challenges facing Christian higher education is the role and impact of student behavior codes in furthering institutional values and inculcating those values in the students served by such institutions. The perspectives of administrators, faculty members, and students regarding the rationale for codes of conduct at their institution are examined. To obtain data, administrators, faculty members, and students at two Christian liberal arts institutions completed questionnaires and participated in follow-up interviews based on individual responses to the questionnaire. The views of all three groups are described as they see behavior codes relating to institutional purpose and the development and implementation of such codes.

The management of teaching is connected and could be increased by using a wide range of different methods especially when we refer to Online and Blended learning. In the first part, the paper is aiming at reviewing the literature regarding the concepts and benefits of Online and Blended learning. Based on this considerations, 8 partner universities from 8 countries jointly developed the Project “Modern competences of academic teachers – the key to modern Higher Education Institutions (HEI)” – Acronym MOCAT. The paper underlines the goals and achievements of the MOCAT project that proposes a conceptual process to increase the management performance in teaching. The paper shows in an organized manner the main deficiencies that are altering the teaching competencies of academic teachers and in connection with this, the project offers solutions to improve the methodological competency of the teachers regarding the development and use of modern approaches. The outcomes of the project consist in the development and implementation of a Multicultural Model of an Academic Teacher Competencies and in 10 online courses that represent modern training materials in the field of teaching methodology. In the end are exposed the way the results of the project can be evaluated in time as well as the anticipated effects of the project implementation.

Background/Context Faculty unionization is an important topic in modern higher education, but the history of the phenomenon has not yet been fully considered. This article brings together issues of professionalization and unionization and provides needed historical background to ongoing unionization efforts and debates. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study This article examines the context of, debates surrounding, and ultimate failure of the first attempts to organize faculty unions in the late 1910s and early 1920s. Following a discussion of the institutional change of the period and the formation of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) as an explicitly nonlabor organization, this article considers the founding, endeavors, and demise of 20 American Federation of Teachers (AFT) locals. In doing so, it demonstrates long-standing divisions within the faculty and concerns regarding professional unionization. Research Design The article uses historical methods and archival evidence to recover and interpret these early debates over the unionization of college faculty. It draws on numerous collections in institutional and organizational archives, as well as contemporaneous newspaper and magazine accounts and the writings of faculty members embroiled in debates over unionization. Discussion Beginning with the founding of AFT Local 33 at Howard University in November 1918, college and normal school faculty organized 20 separate union locals for a variety of social, economic, and institutional reasons before the end of 1920. Some faculty believed that affiliating with labor would provide them with greater voices in institutional governance and offer the possibility of obtaining higher wages. Others saw in organizing a route to achieving academic freedom and job security. Still others believed that, amidst the difficult postwar years, joining the AFT could foster larger societal and educational change, including providing support for K–12 teachers who were engaged in struggles for status and improved working conditions. Despite these varied possibilities, most faculty did not organize, and many both inside and outside academe expressed incredulity that college and university professors would join the labor movement. In the face of institutional and external pressure, and with many faculty members either apathetic about or opposed to unionization, this first wave of faculty unionization concluded in the early 1920s with the closing of all but one of the campus locals. Conclusions/Recommendations Unionization in higher education remains contested despite the tremendous growth in organization in recent decades. The modern concerns, as well as the ways that they are overcome, can be traced to the 1910s and 1920s.
