AbstractMitigation of pressure pulsations in the exhaust of a pulse detonation combustor is crucial for operation with a downstream turbine. For this purpose, a device termed the shock divider is designed and investigated. The intention of the divider is to split the leading shock wave into two weaker waves that propagate along separated ducts with different cross sections, allowing the shock waves to travel with different velocities along different paths. The separated shock waves redistribute the energy of the incident shock wave. The shock dynamics inside the divider are investigated using numerical simulations. A second-order dimensional split finite volume MUSCL-scheme is used to solve the compressible Euler equations. Furthermore, low-cost simulations are performed using geometrical shock dynamics to predict the shock wave propagation inside the divider. The numerical simulations are compared to high-speed schlieren images and time-resolved total pressure recording. For the latter, a high-frequency pressure probe is placed at the divider outlet, which is shown to resolve the transient total pressure during the shock passage. Moreover, the separation of the shock waves is investigated and found to grow as the divider duct width ratio increases. The numerical and experimental results allow for a better understanding of the dynamic evolution of the flow inside the divider and inform its capability to reduce the pressure pulsations at the exhaust of the pulse detonation combustor.

This paper aims at evaluating the characteristics of the wakes periodically shed by the rotating bars of a spoked-wheel type wake generator installed upstream of a high-speed low Reynolds linear low-pressure turbine blade cascade. Due to the very high bar passing frequency obtained with the rotating wake generator (fbar = 2.4−5.6 kHz), a fast-response pressure probe equipped with a single 350 mbar absolute Kulite sensor has been used. In order to measure the inlet flow angle fluctuations, an angular aerodynamic calibration of the probe allowed the use of the virtual three-hole mode; additionally, yielding yaw corrected periodic total pressure, static pressure and Mach number fluctuations. The results are presented for four bar passing frequencies (fbar = 2.4/3.2/4.6/5.6 kHz), each tested at three isentropic inlet Mach numbers M1,is = 0.26/0.34/0.41 and for Reynolds numbers varying between Re1,is = 40,000 and 58,000, thus covering a wide range of engine representative flow coefficients (ϕ = 0.44−1.60). The measured wake characteristics show fairly good agreement with the theory of fixed cylinders in a cross-flow and the evaluated total pressure losses and flow angle variations generated by the rotating bars show fairly good agreement with theoretical results obtained from a control volume analysis.

Curved diffusers are an integral component of the gas turbine engines of high-speed aircraft. These facilitate effective operation of the combustor by reducing the total pressure loss. The performance characteristics of these diffusers depend on their geometry and the inlet conditions. In the present investigation the distribution of axial velocity, transverse velocity, mean velocity, static and total pressures are experimentally studied on a curved diffuser of 30° angle of turn with an area ratio of 1.27. The centreline length was chosen as three times of inlet diameter. The experimental results then were numerically validated with the help of Fluent, the commercial CFD software. The measurements of axial velocity, transverse velocity, mean velocity, static pressure and total pressure distribution were taken at Reynolds number 1.9 × 105 based on inlet diameter and mass average inlet velocity. The mean velocity and all the three components of mean velocity were measured with the help of a pre-calibrated five-hole pressure probe. The velocity distribution shows that the flow is symmetrical and uniform at the inlet and exit sections and high velocity cores are accumulated at the top concave surface due to the combined effect of velocity diffusion and centrifugal action. It also indicates the possible development of secondary motions between the concave and convex walls of the test diffuser. The mass average static pressure recovery and total pressure loss within the curved diffuser increases continuously from inlet to exit and they attained maximum values of 35% and 14% respectively. A comparison between the experimental and predicated results shows a good qualitative agreement between the two. Standard k-ε model in Fluent solver was chosen for validation. It has been observed that coefficient of pressure recovery Cpr for the computational investigation was obtained as 38% compared to the experimental investigation which was 35% and the coefficient of pressure loss is obtained as 13% in computation investigation compared to the 14% in experimental study, which indicates a very good qualitative matching.

AbstractWe studied the behavior of porous carbon compressed by laser-generated shock waves. In particular, we developed a new design for targets, optimized for the investigation of carbon reflectivity at hundred-GPa pressures and eV/k temperatures. Specially designed “two-layer-two materials” targets, comprising porous carbon on transparent substrates, allowed the probing of carbon reflectivity and a quite accurate determination of the position in the P, T plane. This was achieved by the simultaneous measurement of shock breakout times, sample temperature (by optical pyrometry) and uid velocity. The experiments proved the new scheme is reliable and appropriate for reflectivity measurements of thermodynamical states lying out of the standard graphite or diamond hugoniot. An increase of reflectivity in carbon has been observed at 260 GPa and 14,000 K while no increase in reflectivity is found at 200 GPa and 20,000 K. We also discuss the role of numerical simulations in the optimization of target parameters and in clarifying shock dynamics.

The study of the interaction of bubbles with shock waves and ultrasound is sometimes termed ‘acoustic cavitation'. It is of importance in many biomedical applications where sound waves are applied. The use of shock waves and ultrasound in medical treatments is appealing because of their non-invasiveness. In this review, we present a variety of acoustics–bubble interactions, with a focus on shock wave–bubble interaction and bubble cloud phenomena. The dynamics of a single spherically oscillating bubble is rather well understood. However, when there is a nearby surface, the bubble often collapses non-spherically with a high-speed jet. The direction of the jet depends on the ‘resistance' of the boundary: the bubble jets towards a rigid boundary, splits up near an elastic boundary, and jets away from a free surface. The presence of a shock wave complicates the bubble dynamics further. We shall discuss both experimental studies using high-speed photography and numerical simulations involving shock wave–bubble interaction. In biomedical applications, instead of a single bubble, often clouds of bubbles appear (consisting of many individual bubbles). The dynamics of such a bubble cloud is even more complex. We shall show some of the phenomena observed in a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) field. The nonlinear nature of the sound field and the complex inter-bubble interaction in a cloud present challenges to a comprehensive understanding of the physics of the bubble cloud in HIFU. We conclude the article with some comments on the challenges ahead.

A cylinder expansion test for high explosives was carried out to determine JWL parameters. Using the JWL parameters, we carried out numerical simulations of the underwater shock waves generated by the underwater explosion of the high explosives. Our results showed that the behavior of the underwater shock waves at the vicinity of the explosives differs greatly from that far from the explosives. Especially, the strength of the underwater shock wave nearby the explosive rapidly decreases due to the effect of the expansion of the gas products.

Interaction of isotropic quasi-incompressible turbulence with a weak shock wave was studied by direct numerical simulations. The effects of the fluctuation Mach number Mt of the upstream turbulence and the shock strength M21 — 1 on the turbulence statistics were investigated. The ranges investigated were 0.0567 ≤ Mt ≤ 0.110 and 1.05 ≤ M1 ≤ 1.20. A linear analysis of the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a normal shock wave was adopted for comparisons with the simulations.Both numerical simulations and the linear analysis of the interaction show that turbulence is enhanced during the interaction with a shock wave. Turbulent kinetic energy and transverse vorticity components are amplified, and turbulent lengthscales are decreased. The predictions of the linear analysis compare favourably with simulation results for flows with M2t < a(M21 — 1) with a ≈ 0.1, which suggests that the amplification mechanism is primarily linear. Simulations also showed a rapid evolution of turbulent kinetic energy just downstream of the shock, a behaviour not reproduced by the linear analysis. Investigation of the budget of the turbulent kinetic energy transport equation shows that this behaviour can be attributed to the pressure transport term.Shock waves were found to be distorted by the upstream turbulence, but still had a well-defined shock front for M2t < a(M21— 1) with a ≈ 0.1). In this regime, the statistics of shock front distortions compare favourably with the linear analysis predictions. For flows with M2t > a(M21— 1 with a ≈ 0.1, shock waves no longer had well-defined fronts: shock wave thickness and strength varied widely along the transverse directions. Multiple compression peaks were found along the mean streamlines at locations where the local shock thickness had increased significantly.

Schlieren, shadowgraph and other types of refraction-based techniques have been often used to study gas flow structures. They can capture strong density gradients, such as shock waves. Shock wave detection is a very important task in analyzing unsteady gas flows. High-speed imaging systems, including high-speed cameras, are widely used to record large arrays of shadowgraph images. To process large datasets of the high-speed shadowgraph images and automatically detect shock waves, convective plumes and other gas flow structures, two computer software systems based on the edge detection and machine learning with convolutional neural networks (CNN) were developed. The edge-detection software utilizes image filtering, noise removing, background image subtraction in the frequency domain and edge detection based on the Canny algorithm. The machine learning software is based on CNN. We developed two neural networks working together. The first one classifies the image dataset and finds images with shock waves. The other CNN solves the regression task and defines shock wave position (single number) based on image pixels tensor (3-D array of numbers) for each image. The supervised learning code based on example input-output pairs was developed to train models. It was shown, that the machine learning approach gives better results in shock wave detection accuracy, especially for low-quality images with a strong noise level. Software system for automated shadowgraph images processing and x-t curves of the shock wave and convective plume movement plotting was developed.

Microshock tubes are always used to induce shock waves and supersonic flows in aerospace and medical engineering fields. A needle-free drug delivery device including a microshock tube and an expanded nozzle is used for delivering solid drug powders through the skin surface without any injectors or pain. Therefore, to improve the performance of needle-free drug delivery devices, it is significantly important to investigate shock waves and particle-gas flows induced by microshock tubes. Even though shock waves and multiphase flows discharged from microshock tubes have been studied for several decades, the characteristics of unsteady particle-gas flows are not well known to date. In the present studies, three microshock tube models were used for numerical simulations. One microshock tube model with closed end was used to observe the reflected shock wave and flow characteristics behind it. The other two models are designed with a supersonic nozzle and a sonic nozzle at the exit of the driven section, respectively, to investigate particle-gas flows induced by different nozzles. Discrete phase method (DPM) was used to simulate unsteady particle-gas flows and the discrete random walk model was chosen to record the unsteady particle tracking. Numerical results were obtained for comparison with those from experimental pressure measurement and particle visualization. Shock wave propagation was observed to agree well with experimental results from numerical simulations. Particles were accelerated at the exit of microshock tube due to the reservoir pressure induced by reflected shock wave. Both sonic and supersonic nozzles were underexpanded at the end of microshock tubes. Particle velocity was calculated to be smaller than gas velocity, which results from larger drag of injected particles.
