Abstract Measurements of the surface velocity and surface texture of a freely propagating shear jamming front in a dense suspension are compared. The velocity fields are captured with particle image velocimetry (PIV), while the surface texture is captured in a separated experiment by observing a direct reflection on the suspension surface with high-speed cameras. A method for quantifying the surface features and their orientation is presented based on the fast Fourier transform of localized windows. The region that exhibits strong surface features corresponds to the the solid-like jammed region identified via the PIV measurements. Moreover, the surface features within the jammed region are predominantly oriented in the same direction as the eigenvectors of the strain tensor. Thus, from images of the free surface, our analysis is able to show that the surface texture contains information on the principle strain directions and the propagation of the jamming front. The performance characteristics of the radial pump commonly used as a multistage (8 or 10 stage) pump have been investigated experimentally. Due to the complex three-dimensional geometries, the hydraulic performance of multistage pumps is closely related to the internal flows in diffuser and return vanes. In order to investigate the flow characteristics in these regions by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique, a transparent pump is designed. A 532 nm continuous laser and a high-speed camera are used as a light source and an image acquisition device, respectively. The velocity field information in a diffuser of the radial pump is successfully obtained by two-dimensional PIV measurements at various operating conditions.

The use of biological prosthetic valves has increased considerably in recent decades since they have several advantages over mechanical ones, but they still possess the great disadvantage of having a relatively short lifetime. An understudied phenomenon is the flutter effect that causes oscillations in the cusps, which is associated with regurgitation, calcification and fatigue, which can reduce even more the lifetime of bioproteses. In an experimental bench that simulates the cardiac flow, the behavior of a porcine and a bovine pericardium valves was recorded by a high-speed camera to quantify the oscillations of the cusps and an experiment using particle image velocimetry was conducted to study the velocity profiles and shear stresses and their relations with flutter. Results showed that the pericardial valve has lower values of frequencies and amplitudes compared to the porcine valve. Lower velocity values were found in the cusps that did not have flutter, but no relationship was observed between shear stress values and leaflet vibrations. These results may assist in future projects of biological prosthetic valves that have less flutter and longer lifespan.

Abstract Recently, large progress was made in the development towards low-cost PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) for industrial and educational applications. This paper presents the use of two low-cost action cameras for stereoscopic planar PIV. A continuous wave laser or alternatively an LED was used for illumination and pulsed by a frequency generator. A slight detuning of the light pulsation and camera frame rate minimizes systematic errors by the rolling shutter effect and allows for the synchronization of both cameras by postprocessing without the need of hardware synchronization. The setup was successfully qualified on a rotating particle pattern in a planar and stereoscopic configuration as well as on the jet of an aquarium pump. Since action cameras are intended to be used at outdoor activities, they are small, very robust and work autarkic. In conjunction with the synchronization and image pre-processing scheme presented herein, those cameras enable stereoscopic PIV in harsh environments and even on moving experiments. Shear instabilities induced by the relaxation of laminar boundary layer at the free surface of a high speed liquid jet are investigated experimentally. Physical insights into these instabilities and the resulting capillary wave growth are gained by performing non-intrusive measurements of flow structure in the direct vicinity of the surface. The experimental results are a combination of surface visualization, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF), particle image velocimetry (PIV), and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). They suggest that 2D spanwise vortices in the shear layer play a major role in these instabilities by triggering 2D waves on the free surface as predicted by linear stability analysis. These vortices, however, are found to travel at a different speed than the capillary waves they initially created resulting in interference with the waves and wave growth. A new experimental facility was built; it consists of a 20.3 × 146.mm rectangular water wall jet with Reynolds number based on channel depth between 3.13 × 104 to 1.65 × 105 and 115. to 264. based on boundary layer momentum thickness.

In some industrial processes, and especially in agrofood industries, the cleaning in place mechanism used for hydraulic circuits plays an important role. This process needs a good knowledge of the hydrodynamic flows to determinate the appropriate parameters that assure a good cleaning of these circuits without disassembling them. Generally, different arrangements are present in these hydraulic circuits, such as expansions, diffusers, and elbows. The flow crossing these singularities strongly affects the process of cleaning in place. This work is then a contribution to complete recent studies of “aliments quality security” project to ameliorate the quality of the cleaning in place. It presents experimental and numerical investigations of a confined turbulent flow behavior across a conical diffuser (2α=16 deg). The role of a perturbation caused by the presence of an elbow in the test section, upstream of the progressive enlargement, was studied. The main measurements were the static pressure and the instantaneous velocity fields using the particle image velocimetry (PIV). Post-processing of these PIV measurements were adopted using the Γ2 criterion for the vortices detection and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique to extract the most energetic modes contained in the turbulent flow and to the turbulent flow filtering. A database has been also constituted and was used to test the validity of the most models of turbulence, and in particular, a variant of the shear stress transport (SST) model.

The use of highly reactive hydrogen-rich fuels in lean premixed combustion systems strongly affects the operability of stationary gas turbines (GT) resulting in higher autoignition and flashback risks. The present study investigates the autoignition behavior and ignition kernel evolution of hydrogen–nitrogen fuel mixtures in an inline co-flow injector configuration at relevant reheat combustor operating conditions. High-speed luminosity and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in an optically accessible reheat combustor are employed. Autoignition and flame stabilization limits strongly depend on temperatures of vitiated air and carrier preheating. Higher hydrogen content significantly promotes the formation and development of different types of autoignition kernels: More autoignition kernels evolve with higher hydrogen content showing the promoting effect of equivalence ratio on local ignition events. Autoignition kernels develop downstream a certain distance from the injector, indicating the influence of ignition delay on kernel development. The development of autoignition kernels is linked to the shear layer development derived from global experimental conditions.

<p>Optical sensors coupled with image velocimetry techniques are becoming popular for river monitoring applications. In this context, new opportunities and challenges are growing for the research community aimed to: i) define standardized practices and methodologies; and ii) overcome some recognized uncertainty at the field scale. At this regard, the accuracy of image velocimetry techniques strongly depends on the occurrence and distribution of visible features on the water surface in consecutive frames. In a natural environment, the amount, spatial distribution and visibility of natural features on river surface are continuously challenging because of environmental factors and hydraulic conditions. The dimensionless seeding distribution index (SDI), recently introduced by Pizarro et al., 2020a,b and Dal Sasso et al., 2020, represents a metric based on seeding density and spatial distribution of tracers for identifying the best frame window (FW) during video footage. In this work, a methodology based on the SDI index was applied to different study cases with the Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) technique. Videos adopted are taken from the repository recently created by the COST Action Harmonious, which includes 13 case study across Europe and beyond for image velocimetry applications (Perks et al., 2020). The optimal frame window selection is based on two criteria: i) the maximization of the number of frames and ii) the minimization of SDI index. This methodology allowed an error reduction between 20 and 39% respect to the entire video configuration. When a research ship sails at a high speed, there is relative motion between the ship and fluid. The ship is slammed by the fluid. To reduce the direct impact of the fluid, sonar is installed in the moonpool, and acoustic detection equipment is installed along the research ship bottom behind the moonpool. However, during high-speed sailing, a large number of bubbles form in the moonpool. Some bubbles escape from the moonpool and flow backward along the bottom of the ship. When a large number of bubbles are around the sonar and acoustic detection equipment, the equipment malfunctions. However, there have been few studies on bubble formation in the moonpool with sonar and distribution along the ship bottom behind the moonpool. Therefore, a related model was developed and prototype tests were carried out in this study. The appropriate similarity criteria were selected and verified to ensure the reliability of the experiment. Considering the influences of speed, sonar, moonpool shape, and draft, the reason and mechanism of bubble formation in a sonar moonpool were studied. An artificial ventilation method was used to simulate a real navigation environment. Because the bubbles are in a bright state under laser irradiation, the bubbles can be used as tracer particles. A high-speed camera captured illuminated bubbles. The distribution mechanism of bubbles along the ship bottom behind the moonpool was investigated using particle image velocimetry under the influence of the moonpool shape and sailing speed. The model experimental results agreed well with those of the prototype test. The air sucked into the water was the dominant factor in bubble formation in the moonpool. The bubbles were distributed in a W shape under the ship bottom.

ABSTRACT Laboratory experiments on granular flows remain essential tools for gaining insight into several aspects of granular dynamics that are inaccessible from field-scale investigations. Here, we report an experimental campaign on steady dry granular flows in a flume with inclination of 35°. Different flow rates are investigated by adjusting an inflow gate, while various kinematic boundary conditions are observed by varying the basal roughness. The flume is instrumented with high-speed cameras and a no-flicker LED lamp to get reliable particle image velocimetry measurements in terms of both time averages and second-order statistics (i.e., granular temperature). The same measuring instruments are also used to obtain concurrent estimations of the solid volume fraction at the sidewall by employing the stochastic-optical method (SOM). This innovative approach uses a measurable quantity, called two-dimensional volume fraction, which is correlated with the near-wall volume fraction and is obtainable from digital images under controlled illumination conditions. The knowledge of this quantity allows the indirect measurement of the near-wall volume fraction thanks to a stochastic transfer function previously obtained from numerical simulations of distributions of randomly dispersed spheres. The combined measurements of velocity and volume fraction allow a better understanding of the flow dynamics and reveal the superposition of different flow regimes along the flow depth, where frictional and collisional mechanisms exhibit varying relative magnitudes.
