Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a crystallizable thermoplastic used as composite matrix materials in application which requires high yield stress, high toughness, long term high temperature service, and resistance to solvent and radiation. There have been several reports on the crystallization behavior of neat PEEK and of CF/PEEK composite. Other reports discussed the effects of crystallization on the mechanical properties of PEEK and CF/PEEK composites. However, these reports were all concerned with the crystallization or melting processes at or close to atmospheric pressure. Thus, the effects of high pressure on the crystallization of CF/PEEK will be examined in this study.The continuous carbon fiber reinforced PEEK (CF/PEEK) laminate composite with 68 wt.% of fibers was obtained from Imperial Chemical Industry (ICI). For the high pressure experiments, HIP was used to keep these samples under 1000, 1500 or 2000 atm. Then the samples were slowly cooled from 420 °C to 60 °C in the cooling rate about 1 - 2 degree per minute to induce high pressure crystallization. After the high pressure treatment, the samples were scanned in regular DSC to study the crystallinity and the melting temperature. Following the regular polishing, etching, and gold coating of the sample surface, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to image the microstructure of the crystals. Also the samples about 25mmx5mmx3mm were prepared for the 3-point bending tests.

This work presents the experimental determination of fracture mechanics parameters of composite specimens manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF) with continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic filaments, based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). The critical mode I translaminar fracture toughness (KIc) and the critical energy release rate (GIc) are found for unidirectional and cross-ply laminates. The specimens were submitted to quasi-static tensile testing. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to find the stress field. The stress fields around the crack tip are compared to linear elastic finite element simulations. The results demonstrate the magnitude of fracture toughness is in the same range as for polymers and some metals, depending on lay-up configuration. Besides, fractographic analyses show some typical features as river lines, fiber impression, fiber pulls-out and porosity aspects.

Rolling-contact fatigue test methods were used to measure the wear performance of several silicon nitride materials. Sintered, hot pressed and hot isostatically pressed materials exhibited wear rates ranging over three orders of magnitude. Hot isostatically pressed materials had the lowest wear rates. Despite the disparity in wear performance, all materials tested had useful rolling-contact fatigue lives compared to steel. Fatigue life estimates, failure modes, and rolling wear performance for theses ceramics are compared to M-50 steel. This work highlights the rapid contact stress reductions that occur due to conformal wear in rolling-contact fatigue testing. Candidate bearing materials with unacceptably high wear rates may exhibit useful fatigue lives. Rolling contact bearing materials must possess useful wear and fatigue resistance. Proper performance screening of candidate bearing materials must describe the failure mode, wear rate, and the fatigue life. Guidelines for fatigue testing methods are proposed.

In order to explore influence on tribological behavior of PEEK composite film layer in PEEK-PTFE composite radial alumina ball bearings, rolling contact fatigue tests were performed by using the PEEK bearing’s inner rings with the artificial defects in dry condition. When rotation speed and applied load were 600 rpm and 98 N, the number of cycles of the PEEK-PTFE bearings reached 1.0×107 fatigue cycles. The artificial defects with 0.02 mm depth on the raceway surface of the PEEK inner ring was covered with PEEK composite film accumulation.
