AbstractObjectivesThis study has been designed to elucidate the prevalence of stress, depression and poor sleep among medical students in a Pakistani medical school. There is a paucity of data on social support among medical students in Pakistan; an important predictor of depressive symptoms. Therefore, this study was also aimed to demonstrate the direct and indirect impact of social support in alleviating depressive symptoms in the study sample.MethodsThis observational cross-sectional study was conducted in Lahore, Pakistan, where a total of 400 students at a medical school were approached between 1st January to 31st March 2018 to participate in the study. The study sample comprised of medical and dental students enrolled at a privately financed Pakistani medical and dental school. The participants responded to a self-administered survey comprising of five parts: a) demographics, b) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), c) Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), d) Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and e) Perceived Stress Scale-4 (PSS-4). All data were analysed using SPSS v. 20. Linear regression analysis was used to reveal the predictors of depression.ResultsIn total, 353 medical students participated, yielding a response rate of 88.25%. Overall, poor sleep quality was experienced by 205 (58.1%) students. Mild to severe depression was reported by 83% of the respondents: mild depression by 104 (29.5%), moderate depression by 104 (29.5%), moderately severe depression by 54 (15.3%) and severe depression by 31 (8.8%) respondents. Subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, daytime dysfunction and stress levels were significantly associated with depression symptoms. Social support was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms in the regression model (Beta = -0.08, P < 0.09); however, it acted as a significant mediator, reducing the strength of the relationship between depressive symptoms and sleep quality and stress.ConclusionsAccording to our study, a large proportion of healthcare (medical and dental) students were found to be suffering from mild to moderate depression and experienced poor sleep quality. It is concluded that social support is an important variable in predicting depressive symptomatology by ameliorating the effects of poor sleep quality and high stress levels.

Objective The purpose of this cross-sectional survey is to explore the current state of Internet addiction (IA) in Chinese medical students and its connection with medical students’ sleep quality and self-injury behavior.Methods Respondents were came from Wannan Medical College, China. The Young’s Internet Addiction Test, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Self-Harm Questionnaire were used in this cross-sectional survey. A total of 3,738 medical students were investigated, 1,552 (41.52%) males, 2,186 (58.48%) females. T-test, chi-square test and MANOVA were used for data analysis.Results Of the 3,738 medical students, 1,054 (28.2%) reported having IA, 1,126 (30.1%) reported having poor sleep quality, 563 (15.1%) having self-harm behaviors. IA tends to be more female, upper grade students. The sleep quality of IA was worse than that of non-IA (χ<sup>2</sup>=54.882, p<0.001), and the possibility of self-injury was higher than non-IA (χ<sup>2</sup>=107.990, p<0.001).Conclusion This survey shows that the IA detection rate of medical students was 28.2%. Females, higher grade students had a higher IA detection rate. The low sleep quality and self-injury behavior of medical students are associated with IA.

Background: In recent years the internet had become the most indispensable tool for students for learning, entertainment, and communication. Internet over-usage had emerged as a major problem among students causing the emergence of a problem that is defined as internet addiction (IA) which affects sleep and leads to several mental health problems. This study is the step toward understanding the effect of internet addiction on sleep quality among medical college students in Pondicherry. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. It is a questionnaire-based study administrated among 298 consenting medical students. The participants were assessed by proforma containing demographic details, variables related to internet use, questionnaires of Internet Addiction Test, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for Sleep quality. Statistical data were analysed by SPSS-25. Results: A total of 287 students participated; 113 (39.4%) were males and 174 (60.6%) are females. Out of which Average users were 244 (85.01%) and problematic internet usage was 43 (14.99%), whereas poor sleep quality is found in 132 (45.99%) individuals. A significant correlation was found between internet addiction and the quality of sleep. Conclusions: Participants with problematic internet users were more likely to have a poor quality of sleep and vice versa.

Background: Excessive internet usage is a worldwide problematic issue among young adults and college students. Previous studies showed that Saudi young adults are involved in this problem. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of Internet Addiction (IA), and to find out its relation with depressive symptoms, sleep quality, and demographic variables. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. Data were collected from 341 nursing students in Saudi Arabia using three scales: Young’s Internet Addiction Test, Central Epidemiologic Scale for Depression and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: The results showed that 35.1% of students were suffering from frequent problems and 0.9% were suffering from significant problems due to heavy internet usage. The correlation results found a positive moderate correlation between IA and depression (r = 0.401, p < 0.001) and a positive weak correlation with sleep quality (r = 0. 196, p = 0.002). Sleeping and depression were weakly correlated (r = 0.274, p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed that IA was associated with: smoking status, high family income, duration of usage (3-6 hours and >6 hours), and depressive symptoms. The depressive level was associated with duration of usage (>6 hours), students’ grading point average (GPA), IA, and sleep quality. Sleep quality was found to be associated with duration of usage (>6 hours) and having depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The findings illustrate the need for proper management of internet usage, as well as developing plans to avoid the negative consequences of internet addiction on psychological wellbeing by incorporating nursing education programs about appropriate internet usage.

There have been numerous studies on the relationship between sleep and depression, as well as the relationship between sleep and depression, and heart rate variability (HRV), respectively. Even so, few studies have combined 24-h HRV analysis to study sleep quality and depressive symptoms. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between depressed symptoms, sleep quality, and 24-h HRV in medical students. The particiants were all students at a medical university in Guangdong province, China. A total of 74 college students participated. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), and 24-h ECG monitoring. The results showed that 41.7% of the medical students had poor sleep quality, with higher levels of depressive symptoms and more negative emotions, and there was no difference in 24-h HRV indices between the low PSQI group and the high one. Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between sleep quality and depressive symptoms (r = 0.617), but the relationship between 24-h HRV indices and PSQI global scores, BDI scores were not significant. However, the correlation analysis of PSQI components and 24-h HRV showed that sleep disturbance was significantly negatively correlated with SDNN and LF in waking period (r = −0.285, −0.235), and with SDNN in sleeping period (r = −0.317). In general, the sleep disturbance in PSQI components can sensitively reflect the relationship between sleep quality and 24-h HRV of medical students. Individuals with higher sleep disturance may have lower SDNN during awake period and bedtime period, and lower LF in awake period. Twenty-four hour HRV has certain application value in clinical sleep quality monitoring, and its sensitivity and specificity in clinical application and daily life are still worth further investigation.
