Background: Excessive internet usage is a worldwide problematic issue among young adults and college students. Previous studies showed that Saudi young adults are involved in this problem. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of Internet Addiction (IA), and to find out its relation with depressive symptoms, sleep quality, and demographic variables. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. Data were collected from 341 nursing students in Saudi Arabia using three scales: Young’s Internet Addiction Test, Central Epidemiologic Scale for Depression and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: The results showed that 35.1% of students were suffering from frequent problems and 0.9% were suffering from significant problems due to heavy internet usage. The correlation results found a positive moderate correlation between IA and depression (r = 0.401, p < 0.001) and a positive weak correlation with sleep quality (r = 0. 196, p = 0.002). Sleeping and depression were weakly correlated (r = 0.274, p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed that IA was associated with: smoking status, high family income, duration of usage (3-6 hours and >6 hours), and depressive symptoms. The depressive level was associated with duration of usage (>6 hours), students’ grading point average (GPA), IA, and sleep quality. Sleep quality was found to be associated with duration of usage (>6 hours) and having depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The findings illustrate the need for proper management of internet usage, as well as developing plans to avoid the negative consequences of internet addiction on psychological wellbeing by incorporating nursing education programs about appropriate internet usage.

Objective: To compare the health status (stress, depressive symptoms and sleep quality), the resilience and quality of life in first and fourth year nursing students.Methods: This is a cross-sectional research conducted in 2016 with 86 students enrolled in first and fourth years of the nursing degree. We applied the instrument for Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, Wagnild and Young’s Resilience Scale; and the WHOQOL-BREF. ANOVA (Test F) was applied for data analysis.Results and conclusions: A total of 49 first-year and 37 fourth-year students were sampled for this study. Fourth- year nursing students showed higher levels of stress, lower intensity of depressive symptoms and higher quality of life and resilience levels. The poor sleep quality was prevalent in both groups. Conclusion: although the nursing education potentially contributes for students’ sickness, the experiences lived in this period may strength the resilience skills.Conclusions: Video indexing and retrieval are accomplished by using hashing and $k$-d tree methods, while visual signatures containing color, shape and texture information are estimated for the key-frames, by using image and frequency domain techniques. Experimental results with the dataset of a multimedia information system especially developed for managing television broadcast archives demonstrate that our approach works efficiently, retrieving videos in 0.16 seconds on average and achieving recall, precision and F1 measure values, as high as 0.76, 0.97 and 0.86 respectively.

Abstract Introduction Depression is prevalent among nursing students. Rumination and sleep-wake rhythms are associated to mental illness; however, no clear path has been found. This exploratory study aimed to examine the associations among circadian activity rhythms (CAR), rumination, and depressive symptoms in female nursing students; further, to test a hypothesized CAR conceptual model. Methods A total of 148 female nursing junior students in China completed a battery of questionnaires, including Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS), and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS). Wrist actigraphy was used to collect total sleep time, CAR, and acrophase (time of the peak of the fitted activity curve). The path analysis was explored by using SPSS and AMOS. Results The mean age of the students was 20.64 years (SD = 0.86). About 58.8% of the participants were either mild or moderate depressed. About 93.9% of the students reported significant insomnia symptoms (AIS scores &gt;6). Rumination was measured by the RRS (M= 2.01, SD = 0.54), and students scored higher in brooding than that of reflective pondering (2.07 vs. 1.95). The average of TST was 394.59 minutes (SD = 51.92). The CAR ranged from 0.40 to 0.98, with a mean of 0.75 (SD = 0.11). The acrophase ranged from 12:46 to 20:14 (median 16:30), with a later acrophase indicates of a more delayed circadian phase. The final model shows satisfactory fit (χ2= 2.238, p= .327); a better CAR can indirectly reduce depressive symptoms by directly reducing brooding (B = -1.149) and improving insomnia symptoms (B = -6.6443). Conclusion In order to prevent psychological problems of nursing students, ruminating and CAR should be part of health screening. Background and aim: The internet is a worldwide area network that connects computer system throughout the world providing a variety of information and communication. Internet addiction is defined as any online-related, compulsive behavior which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family, friends, loved ones, and one's work environment. Aim: This study assessed the internet usage and its addiction level among university students in a selected university in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirate. University students are highly predisposed to internet addiction which can affect their personal, family, educational, interactive and societal life. Study design: A cross-sectional design .The sample of the study consisted of 110 nursing students who were selected using convenient sample. Internet addiction test, internet usage questionnaire and student attitude scale were used as data collection instruments.Results: The findings showed that more than half (50.9%) of students were aged 21-<25 years, with more than two- fifth (45.5% of them being average online internet user. Less than two-third (62.7%) of students had favorable attitude towards internet usage. There is a positive correlation between internet addiction score and age of the study group with no statistically significant differenceConclusions: the study concluded that nursing students are average internet users, they have favorable attitude to internet use, with positive correlation between internet addiction score and age, though experiencing occasional problems. The use of social networking sites, especially by the young people, should be done sparingly so as not to provoke extreme behaviors and negative impact to their education performance and social life that can lead to destruction of the life of youths globally as revealed in this study Internet addiction is a serious problem among university students generally which indicates the need for more public attention and resources to develop effective prevention/intervention strategies.

Abstract Objectives During pregnancy women are at increased risk of poor sleep quality and depression. Serotonin and melatonin are compounds that are involved in regulation of sleep and mood. Several nutrients are involved in the synthesis of these compounds, including tryptophan, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and vitamin D. Studies exploring associations between these nutrients and sleep, as well as mood, have been largely limited to the general population, showing mixed results. The aim of this study was to assess the associations of dietary intake of these nutrients with sleep quality and depression in pregnant women. Methods Participants enrolled in the Understanding Pregnancy Signals and Infant Development (UPSIDE) Study (n = 253) were included in this analysis if they completed dietary, sleep and depression assessments during the 2nd trimester. Dietary and supplement intake were measured using 24-hour dietary recalls. The NCI method was used to estimate usual intake. Sleep quality was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Depressive symptoms were measured with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Multivariable linear regression was conducted to estimate the associations between nutrients and sleep/depression, adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, parity, education, early pregnancy body mass index, smoking status, energy and macronutrient intake. Results The NCI adjusted mean intakes of tryptophan, DHA, and vitamin D were 1.02 ± 0.11 g/day, 0.13 ± 0.11g/day, and 19.74 ± 21.80 mcg/day, respectively. Mean PSQI score was 6.15 ± 3.39, where higher scores indicated worse sleep quality, and mean EPDS score was 5.84 ± 4.77, where higher scores indicated increased severity of depressive symptoms. Tryptophan intake was inversely associated with EPDS scores (b = −15.23, 95%CI: −26.75, −3.72). The associations between DHA, vitamin D, and depression were not significant. The selected nutrients were not associated with PSQI scores. Conclusions In this study, higher tryptophan intake was associated with lower depressive symptoms among pregnant women during the second trimester. Additional research on the relationship between tryptophan intake and maternal mental health during pregnancy is warranted. Funding Sources NIH, Mae Stone Goode Foundation, Wynne Family Foundation.

Background: In recent years the internet had become the most indispensable tool for students for learning, entertainment, and communication. Internet over-usage had emerged as a major problem among students causing the emergence of a problem that is defined as internet addiction (IA) which affects sleep and leads to several mental health problems. This study is the step toward understanding the effect of internet addiction on sleep quality among medical college students in Pondicherry. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. It is a questionnaire-based study administrated among 298 consenting medical students. The participants were assessed by proforma containing demographic details, variables related to internet use, questionnaires of Internet Addiction Test, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for Sleep quality. Statistical data were analysed by SPSS-25. Results: A total of 287 students participated; 113 (39.4%) were males and 174 (60.6%) are females. Out of which Average users were 244 (85.01%) and problematic internet usage was 43 (14.99%), whereas poor sleep quality is found in 132 (45.99%) individuals. A significant correlation was found between internet addiction and the quality of sleep. Conclusions: Participants with problematic internet users were more likely to have a poor quality of sleep and vice versa.

Objective: To describe the sleep quality of nursing students according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 286 nursing students from a public institution in Salvador, Bahia. Data gathering instruments were applied in classrooms and data were assessed in absolute and relative frequencies, means and standard deviation.Results: The mean age of participants was 23.48 years (SD = 4.421). Most of students were female (90.2%), single with partner (90.9%), afro descendent (87.8%), unemployed (81.5%), total Family income below than four minimum wages (47.2%), enrolled between 6th and 10th  semester (54.5%), attending academic activities in two or three shifts (80.8%). Sample showed poor sleep quality (86.4%), especially due to the sleep duration, sleep disturbances and daytime disfunction.Conclusions: Poor sleep quality was prevalent in the sample, what rises the need of further analysis of the associated factors and interventions to change this reality.
