AbstractThis paper studies the role of social networks in the management of natural resources. We consider a finite number of agents who exploit a specific natural resource. Harvesting is subject to three external effects, namely resource stock externalities, crowding externalities, and collaboration spillovers. We show that the structure of the social network—defined by the presence of collaboration links between individual agents—determines the equilibrium and the optimal harvesting amount. We then allow the agents to make decisions about creating or eliminating cooperation links, which endogenizes the structure of the network and is proved to affect total harvesting and aggregate welfare. Conservation plans are shown to change the regulator’s objective and increase even further the gap between the decentralized and the optimal outcomes. We show that the optimal policy depends explicitly on the structure of the network and the ‘centrality’ of the associated agents. Finally, introducing heterogeneity is proved to affect both individual profits and the incentives to create cooperation links.

Results and discussion: The main role of the social network was emotional and material support, and the main components of this network were: companion, mother, aunt and daughter, as well as nursing team, physician and other family members/companions. Final considerations and implications for the practice: It was verified that the totality of the interviewees was female, however, the husband was the most important member of the social network for the family members involved, since they perform the material/financial and emotional function. In addition, the participants consider that they are responsible for all care to the family and, in the condition in that they are, they understand it as a favor provided by the other members of the network. Identifying the composition of the social networks of family members/companions provides a better targeting of care in order to strengthen the social support received.

Natural resources are important for human beings to sustain life on earth. However, continuous use of natural resources by the human beings, had affected the earth. There is need to manage our natural resources to improve the sustainability of the natural resources. Women have always come to forward to conserve and protect natural resources because they are the primary users of natural resources traditionally as well as modern. In this paper, A scale has been developed and standardized that can be used to measure the role of farm women towards natural resource management activities. The scale was developed by using the technique of “Scale Product Method” which combines the Thurston’s technique of equal appearing interval scale for selection of the items and Likert’s technique of summated rating for ascertaining the response on the scale. A total of 78 Natural Resource Management (NRM) activities were selected. Based on Scale (median) value and Q value, 72 Natural Resource Management (NRM) was selected to measure the role of farm women towards natural resource management activities. The co-efficient of reliability was calculated by the Rulon’s formula i.e. 0.81 and the content validity was observed thoroughly. The reliability and validity of the scale indicate its consistency and precision of the results. This scale can be used to measure the role of farm women in natural resource management activities.
