Research on metal adsorption isotherms with activated carbon oil palm empty fruit bunches in liquid waste. Oil palm empty fruit bunches are used as adsorbent for metal absorption. Oil palm empty fruit bunches are prepared at 105O C for 24 hours to get a constant weight then are characterized by SEM. Oil palm empty fruit bunches are heated at temperatures (400O C – 700O C) to get activated carbon. Re-characterization using SEM at optimum conditions shows that the pore surface is expanding. Then with a batch method for metal absorption (Cu, Pb, Hg) and analyzed using AAS. The most common absorption of activated carbon of oil palm empty fruit bunches is Cu (II). Based on the Langmuir and Freundlich R2 models close to 1, which means that multi-layer adsorption occurs.

Activated carbon is a solid product resulting from carbonization and activation of lignocellulosic biomass by several methods and activators. Each activator can produce different characteristics of activated carbon. The activated carbon of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB) is processed from Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) waste, which is quite abundant in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of OPEFB carbon that had been chemically activated using hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) No. 06 - 3730 - 1995. The research method consisted of the process of carbonization of OPEFB using a pyrolysis device at 400oC for 6 hours; activation of carbon with activator HCl and H3PO4 at various activator concentrations; characterization of activated carbon on the parameters of moisture content, ash content, absorption of iodine, and absorption of methylene blue. The results showed that the 0.5000 M HCl was the best activator that produced the quality of OPEFB activated carbon according to SNI 06 - 3730 - 1995 on parameters of moisture content, ash content and absorption of iodine.Keywords: Activated Carbon, Iodine Absorption, Oil Palm Empty Fruit BunchesABSTRAKAktivasi karbon tandan kosong kelapa sawit dengan asam klorida dan asam fosfat serta uji karakterisasi berdasarkan SNI No. 06–3730–1995Karbon aktif merupakan produk padatan yang dihasilkan dari karbonisasi dan aktivasi biomassa lignoselulosa dengan beberapa metode dan aktivator. Masing-masing aktivator dapat menghasilkan karakteristik karbon aktif yang berbeda. Karbon aktif Tandan Kosong Kelapa Sawit (TKKS) diolah dari limbah TKKS yang keberadaannya cukup melimpah di Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui karakteristik karbon TKKS yang telah diaktivasi secara kimia menggunakan aktivator asam klorida (HCl) dan asam fosfat (H3PO4) berdasarkan Standar Nasional Indonesia  (SNI) No.  06 – 3730 – 1995. Metode penelitian terdiri atas proses karbonisasi TKKS menggunakan alat pirolisis pada suhu 400 ℃ selama 6 jam; aktivasi karbon dengan aktivator HCl dan H3PO4 pada berbagai konsentrasi aktivator; serta karakterisasi karbon aktif pada parameter kadar air dan abu, daya jerap terhadap iod serta daya jerap terhadap biru metilen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa HCl 0,5 M merupakan aktivator terbaik dan karbon aktif yang dihasilkan memiliki karakteristik yang sesuai dengan SNI 06 – 3730 – 1995 pada parameter kadar air dan abu serta daya jerap terhadap iod.Kata kunci: Daya Jerap Iod, Karbon Aktif, Tandan Kosong Kelapa Sawit

Non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels could be combusted for energy and electricity to human kind. The demand of fossil fuel energy had reached an exponential growth which caused disasters and catastrophic damages on the environment; thus, renewable resources should be implemented to protect the environment. One of the natural resources was biomass waste. In this study, spent activated carbon (AC) was co-pelletized with biomass waste, oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB). The effect of EFB, AC and adhesive (tapioca) mixing ratio in the pellet was evaluate through physical and thermal properties. The raw materials were grinded and mixed together at different AC/EFB/tapioca ratio. The mixed raw materials were compressed at 130°C and 7 MPa for 10 minutes. The densified products were characterized by using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). For the thermal characteristics, sample with 0% waste AC, 90% EFB and 10% starch had the highest mass loss rate (570 µg/min) followed by sample with 10% of waste AC, 60% of EFB and 30% of starch which was 420 µg/min. Besides, sample with 0% waste AC, 90% EFB and 10% had the highest burn out temperature (802.6 °C) followed by sample with 30% of waste AC, 60% of EFB and 10% of starch which was 792.85 °C. In conclusion, sample with 0% waste AC, 90% EFB and 10% starch had an easiest ignition and longest combustion period since it had the highest mass loss rate and burn out temperature.

Green monoliths (GMs) with different composition, labelled as GM1, GM2 and GM3, were prepared from self-adhesive carbon grains (SACG) produced from fibers of oil palm empty fruit bunches, SACG treated with 0.4 M H2SO4 and mixtures of SACG and carbon nanotubes (5 wt.%) treated with 0.4 M H2SO4, respectively. Each GMs was carbonized and then activated with holding time of 1 h and 2 h, respectively, to produce their respective activated carbon monoliths (ACMs). These ACMs were used as electrodes to fabricate supercapacitor cells using H2SO4 electrolytes, Teflon separator and stainless steel 316L current collector. The porosity of the ACMs, examined by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm method were found affected after prolonging the activation time. From the electrochemical characterization of the ACMs electrodes using galvanic charge-discharge methods, it was found that supercapacitor cells fabricated using the ACMs produced by longer activation time (2 h) showed better performance, which had higher specific capacitance (113 F/g), specific power (159 W/kg) and specific energy (3.35 W h/kg), compared to the cells using ACMs produced by shorter activation time (1 h).
