AbstractThe sequential mixed-mode strategy has become standard practice in the survey management of longitudinal studies, in order to achieve consistently high response rates. To realise this aim in a cost-efficient way, a first mode is often an online questionnaire, towards which the target persons are pushed, and a second mode is then a telephone interview, offered to those who do not respond to the initial mode. However, the rationale for using the sequential mixed-mode plus “push-to-web” strategy to reduce the burden of choosing between survey modes, in order to maximise survey participation, could be undermined if there is an overlapping field period during which the target persons could choose between two or more offered modes. The use of reminders might be useful in solving this problem of competing risks. In the context of a multiple-panel study, this question was investigated by utilising longitudinal paradata from the fieldwork, as well as procedures of event history analysis that are adequate for the analysis of processes with competing risks. First, for a web survey as the initial mode and computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) as the subsequent mode, it was found that the idea of a sequential mixed-mode plus “push-to-web” strategy does work even in the case of competing risks in the choice of a survey mode. Second, it was confirmed that reminders are a useful instrument for stimulating panellists to choose the running survey mode. Third, and finally, it was found that this feature of survey management is effective in countering panellists’ procrastination in regard to responding to a survey.

We describe an experiment to provide a time-limited incentive among a random sample of 594 hard-to-reach respondents, 200 of whom were offered the incentive to complete all survey components of a study during a three-week winter holiday period. Sample members were primary caregivers of children included in the 2014 Child Development Supplement to the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The incentive provided US$50 to caregivers who completed a 75-minute telephone interview and whose eligible children each completed a 30-minute interview. Results indicate that the incentive was an effective and cost-efficient strategy to increase short-term response rates with hard-to-reach respondents and had no negative impact on final response rates.

The academic literature contains surprisingly little information regarding the design and conduct of surveys dealing with sensitive social issues. The present paper is an attempt to help fill that gap so that other researchers conducting similar projects can learn from our experience. In particular, I focus on the various challenges we encountered in carrying out a computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) survey of informal carers in Australia, our responses to these challenges and our learnings from this endeavour. In the present article, I discuss the following issues: cost-efficient sampling for small numbers; opt-out versus opt-in approaches to respondent participation; status errors in administrative data; reducing respondent refusals; interviewing non-English speakers; questionnaire topic order; carers who care for more than one person; and interviewer training, including interviewer and/or respondent distress. The conclusions were: (1) carers are generally willing and able to answer quite sensitive questions around caring, despite the fact that they may become distressed in doing so; (2) carers are willing to answer a rather long (25 min) telephone survey; (3) thorough interviewer training is critically important, with an emphasis on achieving a balance between sensitivity and efficiency; and (4) respondents should be given the opportunity at the end of the interview to make additional comments and to provide their contact details should they desire follow up from an appropriate authority.

BACKGROUND COVID-19 pandemic caused significant modifications such as limiting the number of residents in the clinics, cancelling elective surgical procedures, stopping face to face practical education, and transforming theoretical education into distance learning platforms resulted in alterations in the curriculum. OBJECTIVE We addressed to assess the situation of trainees’ education using an online questionnaire from the trainees’ and directors’ perspective during the pandemic. METHODS The survey platform SurveyMonkey® was used to distribute the survey and to collect responses. We generated a list of multiple-choice questions about how social distancing affected the delivery of medical education, potential compromise in core training and difficulties in conducting clinical research for the thesis. RESULTS A total of 364 trainees among 552 (65.9%) under training at our university hospital and 90% of the directors (37 of 41) responded the survey. Almost 78 percent of the trainees claimed that they have been negatively affected during the pandemic. Although majority of the trainees (60,3%) reported that extension of their education program is not necessary, most of the program directors were in tendency of extending the duration of the speciality training period. The participants predominantly considered that online training would keep on being a part of the training program after the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Education programs are negatively affected during pandemics. However, authorities should manage this deficiency by a new perspective since present trainees are familiar to use technology-driven virtual sources for their education. After the pandemic, computer-assisted online learning and web-based programs should be integrated into educational curriculum. The article aims at presenting the educational offer and the needs of vocational education institutions in Zachodniopomorskie voivodship. The survey within the framework of the research project Diagnosis of the offer and needs of educational institutions in Zachodniopomorskie voivodship in the area of vocational education, was conducted in 2014 in cooperation with the Voivodship Labour Office in Szczecin. The study was performed with diagnostic survey method using PAPI (traditional interview) and CATI (computer assisted telephone interview) techniques. The survey covered basic vocational and technical schools, institutions preparing for work, specialised secondary and post-secondary schools as well as universities. The respondents answered 24 questions concerning the potential of vocational education, its didactic needs and infrastructure, as well as cooperation with employers in Zachodniopomorskie voivodship. The results of the survey showed, i.a. that the institutions of vocational education in Zachodniopomorskie are underfunded.

The growing share of seniors in the population of Poland and the lack of systemic solutions in the field of social security, resulting from the lack of diagnosis of real needs of this group, imposes the extension of research tasks undertaken so far. Such diagnosis is needed to build a housing system for the Polish seniors. The objective of the article is to present selected results of research on the needs of people aged 60+ conducted in 2017. The study of quantitative and qualitative nature, was based an online questionnaire (CAWI — Computer-Assisted Web Interview) as well as on a questionnaire distributed in paper form and individual interviews were also conducted (IDI — In-depth Interview). The results of the quantitative research together with the recommendations included in the expertise can constitute a field for entrepreneurship at various levels of activities in construction and services related to facilities in the existing housing infrastructure. Senior housing requires sectoral cooperation, various forms of construction and financing models for housing construction.

This article describes the results of an experiment designed to examine the impact of the use and amount of delayed unconditional incentives in a mixed mode (push to web) supplement on response rates, response mode, data quality, and sample bias. The supplement was administered to individuals who participate in the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the longest running national household panel in the world. After 10 weeks of data collection, individuals who had not yet completed the interview were sent a final survey request and randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: no incentive, US$5, and US$10. The impact of the incentives on response rates and mode, effects on data quality, and sample bias are described. The implications for the use of incentives in mixed mode surveys and directions for future research are discussed.
