The effect of herbal components of Tokishakuyakusan on somatomedin C/insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) level in medium from rat corpora lutea incubated in vitro was examined. Hoelen + peony root + Japanese angelica root, hoelen + peony root, hoelen + Japanese angelica root or peony root + Japanese angelica root decreased the IGF-1 level. The data suggest that constituent herbal components of Tokishakuyakusan regulate the IGF-1 level by rat corpora lutea.

Free radicals, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been known to contribute several degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, aging, certain types of cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, neurodegenerative, and diabetes mellitus. In order to overcome the negative effects of these radicals, some scientists have explored some natural antioxidants from plants and it's by-products. The antioxidant can be defined as any substances or samples capable of inhibiting free radical reactions in the oxidation reaction. Due to curcuminoids contained, Curcuma species such as Curcuma longa, Curcuma heyneana, Curcuma mangga, and Curcuma xanthorriza were commonly used for herbal components in some traditional medicine. Several in vitro tests been introduced and used to measure antioxidant activities, namely radical scavenging assay using 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 -sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), ferric-thiocyanate, phosphomolybdenum method, cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity, metal chelating power, beta-carotene bleaching linoleic-ferric-thiocyanate, and thiobarbituric acid methods. This review highlighted the antioxidant activities in vitro of C. longa, C. heyneana, C. mangga, and C. xanthorriza through several tests. To perform this review, several repute databases were analyzed and used. From this review, it can be stated that Curcuma species have powerful antioxidant activities, therefore they could be potential sources of natural antioxidants and can be used as food supplements.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of ten commercially available herbal and non herbal toothpastes. Methods: Ten toothpaste brands (A-J) were collected. A, C, D, E contained Herbal components only, toothpastes B, F, G contained herbal components and fluoride as main anticariogenic agent, toothpastes H and I contained fluoride and triclosan combination and toothpaste J contained fluoride only as main anticariogenic component. Dental caries samples were collected from 6-14 years old children having occlusal caries in permanent fully erupted molar teeth involving enamel and dentin but caries not involving dental pulp and Streptococcus mutans bacteria isolated by laboratory method. The antimicrobial activity was assessed by measuring the inhibition zones by agar well diffusion method. Results: Fluoridated toothpaste with triclosan had maximum antimicrobial activity at all concentrations when compared to Herbal toothpaste. Conclusion: Toothpastes containing fluoride and triclosan are most effective but herbal tooth pastes have the prospect of becoming safer and effective altenative and provide an ideal home care anticariogenic regimen. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for thousands of years. Most Chinese herbal formulae consist of several herbal components and have been used to treat various diseases. However, the mechanisms of most formulae and the relationship between formulae and their components remain to be elucidated. Here we analyzed the putative mechanism of San-Huang-Xie-Xin-Tang (SHXXT) and defined the relationship between SHXXT and its herbal components by microarray technique. HepG2 cells were treated with SHXXT or its components and the gene expression profiles were analyzed by DNA microarray. Gene set enrichment analysis indicated that SHXXT and its components displayed a unique anti-proliferation pattern via p53 signaling, p53 activated, and DNA damage signaling pathways in HepG2 cells. Network analysis showed that most genes were regulated by one molecule, p53. In addition, hierarchical clustering analysis showed that Rhizoma Coptis shared a similar gene expression profile with SHXXT. These findings may explain why Rhizoma Coptis is the principle herb that exerts the major effect in the herbal formula, SHXXT. Moreover, this is the first report to reveal the relationship between formulae and their herbal components in TCM by microarray and bioinformatics tools.
