AbstractAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an intractable neurodegenerative disease. CD68-positive bone marrow (BM)-derived cells (BMDCs) accumulate in the pathological lesion in the SOD1(G93A) ALS mouse model after BM transplantation (BMT). Therefore, we investigated whether BMDCs can be applied as gene carriers for cell-based gene therapy by employing the accumulation of BMDCs. In ALS mice, YFP reporter signals were observed in 12–14% of white blood cells (WBCs) and in the spinal cord via transplantation of BM after lentiviral vector (LV) infection. After confirmation of gene transduction by LV with the CD68 promoter in 4–7% of WBCs and in the spinal cord of ALS mice, BM cells were infected with LVs expressing glutamate transporter (GLT) 1 that protects neurons from glutamate toxicity, driven by the CD68 promoter, which were transplanted into ALS mice. The treated mice showed improvement of motor behaviors and prolonged survival. Additionally, interleukin (IL)-1β was significantly suppressed, and IL-4, arginase 1, and FIZZ were significantly increased in the mice. These results suggested that GLT1 expression by BMDCs improved the spinal cord environment. Therefore, our gene therapy strategy may be applied to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS in which BMDCs accumulate in the pathological lesion by BMT.

✓ The problem of childhood temporal lobe epilepsy is reviewed and illustrated from three cases in which the patients were freed from fits by temporal lobectomy. The pathological lesion (mesial temporal sclerosis) is discussed and the likelihood that many adult cases have gone unrecognized in childhood is emphasized.

I am satisfied one of the results, if not the objective, of medical education is for doctors to judge their success, or the state of progress of any branch of medicine, against a pathological rather than a sociological criterion. This is the inevitable effect of the amount of time and attention given to pathology in the medical curriculum, and is further reinforced by what is asked in examinations.Traditionally, the problem for the doctor is to try to determine the pathological lesion, using this term at best in a wide sense, and to control this if he can; and the pathological criterion of disease he has in mind is an objective physical criterion, demonstrable in life or after death. As we all know, no pathological lesion in this traditional sense is demonstrable in a large number of patients who go, or are brought, to see doctors. All physical examinations and investigations prove negative. Medicine is therefore faced with the dilemma in these cases of either (a) coming to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong, which is often clearly untenable, or (b) of expanding its scope almost indefinitely to cover every type of maladjustment.

Intussusception in the pediatric age group is usually idiopathic in origin, and in a small number of patients ranging from 2% to 12%, a pathological lesion as a leading point is identifiable. Of the variety of pathologcial lesions identified as leading points for intussusception, Meckel’s diverticulum is the most common but very rarely, isolated heterotopic pancreas is found within it.This is a case report of intussusception in an infant caused by an isolated heterotopic pancreas of the Meckel’s diverticulum. The literature on the subject is also reviewed. TAJ 2011; 24(1): 16-20

The case of a five-year-old spayed female French Bulldog with a mass in the right third eyelid is described. Ultrasonography and computed tomography were used to identify this pathological lesion and to visualise its morphology and extent. The mass was removed and submitted for histopathological examination. A final diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the nictitans gland was made. In the discussion we compare the presented case with the available literature. Only limited information is published about this pathology.
