Effects of Dietary Supplementation with Selenium and Vitamin E on Growth Performance, Nutrient Apparent Digestibility and Blood Parameters in Female Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)

The present study tested the effect of a dietary inclusion with vitamin E and pork lard on the apparent digestibility of the nutrients, the growth performance, the carcass traits, the physical meat quality, and the α-tocopherol content. A total of 60 hybrid rabbits were reared in individual cages from weaning (35 days of age) until slaughter (78 days of age). A control diet with no supplements, one diet supplemented with 2% pork lard, and two diets that used the aforementioned diets supplemented with an additional 200 mg/kg α-tocopheryl acetate were designed. The diets were isoprotein and isoenergy. The fat inclusion increased the crude protein (P < 0.05) and ether extract (P < 0.001) total tract apparent digestibility, and the same was observed for the vitamin E inclusion (P < 0.001 for both variables). This improved the dietary digestible protein content (P < 0.05), which increased the digestible protein to digestible energy ratio (P < 0.001). The fat × vitamin E interaction was observed for the total tract apparent digestibility of the ether extract (P < 0.001), the neutral detergent fibre (P < 0.05) and the acid detergent fibre (P < 0.01). The growth traits were unaffected, with the exception of the feed conversion ratio that improved with the vitamin E addition (P < 0.05). Similarly, the carcass traits remained unaffected, with the exception of the perirenal and total fat incidence that increased with the fat supplement (P < 0.05), and the scapular fat that was reduced with the vitamin E inclusion (P < 0.05). The meat L* (lightness), a* (redness), b* (yellowness) colour values and ultimate pH were unaffected by the experimental treatments, even though a fat × vitamin E interaction was observed for the a* and chroma values of the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle (P < 0.05). Both the fat (P < 0.05) and vitamin E (P < 0.001) dietary inclusion increased the meat α-tocopherol content. Based on the results, it was concluded that the 2% dietary inclusion of animal fat did not provide more benefits for the considered parameters than the sole α-tocopheryl acetate incorporation, but contributed to the increase in the vitamin E content in the meats.

This experiment was set to investigate the effects of DL-methionine (DL-met) supplement on growth performance and amino acid digestion and plasma concentrations in sika deer calves. Twelve healthy 5-month-old sika deer (29.44 ± 2.86 kg initial bodyweight) were randomly divided into three groups (4/group) and one sika deer per replicate. Levels of Met supplement in three treatments were 0, 1 g/kg and 2 g/kg, respectively. The results showed that the average daily gain for the early 35-day study period tended (P = 0.07) to increase linearly as the Met supplement increased, the feed to gain ratio (F : G) for the early period decreased (linearly and quadratically, P < 0.05), and, in the late 35-day study period, tended (linearly, P = 0.08) to decrease as dietary Met increased. The apparent digestibility of Met increased (linearly and quadratically, P < 0.01) with graded amounts of supplemental Met, and the apparent digestibilities of valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, glycine, aspartic and cystine showed a linear increase (P < 0.05). Plasma glycine, proline and isoleucine concentrations increased linearly and quadratically (P < 0.01) with Met supplementation, plasma serine and leucine increased linearly (P < 0.05), and plasma histidine, lysine, arginine and NH3 increased quadratically (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05), with graded amounts of supplemental Met. Met supplementation in the diet improved feed utilisation and amino acid (AA) nutrient digestion, and affected plasma AA concentrations in sika deer calves.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Tongmai granule residue (TGR) on the growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility, blood biochemical parameters, and rumen fermentation in Doper x Small Tail Han hybrid sheep. Twenty-four healthy female lambs (6–7 months of age; 29.64 ± 1.80 kg initial body weight) were randomly divided into 3 groups and fed for 75 days. The control group was fed a commercial concentrate and the other groups were fed diets supplemented with 10% and 15% TGR respectively. Dietary 15% TGR supplementation decreased average daily gain, apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber, but increased the feed conversion ratio, apparent digestibility of crude fat and organic matter in lambs (P < 0.05). The 10% TGR group significantly increased the apparent digestibility of organic matter (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation of 10% and 15% TGR significantly increased serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) content on day 15, IgG content on day 30, and IgA content on day 60 of the feeding period (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation of 15% TGR significantly increased the content of IgA on the 30th day (P < 0.05), and significantly decreased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) on the 30th day (P < 0.05) of the feeding period. TGR at 15% significantly decreased the contents of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) in the rumen (P < 0.05), and significantly increased the pH, NH3-N concentration, and acetic acid: propionic acid ratio (P < 0.05). The results suggest that, the addition of TGR to diet can improve the apparent digestibility of crude fat and organic matter, and improve the anti-atherosclerosis ability and immune function of Doper x Small Tail Han hybrid female lambs. The dietary addition of 10% TGR yielded the best feeding effect in this experiment.
