AbstractWhat are the circumstances under which latecomer firms can develop indigenous innovative capacity and compete globally? China’s construction of a vast domestic security apparatus has contributed to it becoming the world’s largest supplier and consumer of video surveillance products and services. It has also produced several globally competitive companies, including those engaged in digital surveillance. Although security equipment producers initially emerged in Guangdong province, China’s leading technology companies are concentrated in Zhejiang province. This comparative study is motivated by the puzzle of why Guangdong, which has a larger security equipment industry with more local investment and earlier introduction of foreign technology, has lagged behind Zhejiang in technological upgrading. We trace this provincial variation to the policy choices of local state bureaucracies and the business strategies of local enterprises. While macro-level variables such as market demand and establishing national industry standards are important for industrial development, this study demonstrates the critical role of local technocrats and entrepreneurs in facilitating technological innovation in a rapidly evolving surveillance regime. Our analysis also reveals how latecomers to a technology-intensive industry were able to adapt their products strategically to meet the technical demands of a major segment of the domestic market, China’s public security sector.

This study is a historical documentation of the recent trends of Sony’s and Samsung’s engagement in the cultural industries mainly by examining convergence between their own hardware and software to ascertain whether this trend is confirmation that Sony and Samsung play pivotal roles in the cultural market. This chapter investigates the cause of the changes and growth of Sony and Samsung, and it discusses the similarities and differences between them, with a focus on corporate policies and business strategies in convergence. In particular, it articulates the ways in which changing corporate policies have played a critical role in the growth of local-based transnational cultural corporations, because what makes them different from other firms is their approach to corporate policies of convergence.

TI Group plc is the largest private sector tube-maker in the UK. Group companies manufacture specialist and bearing tube as well as commodity welded and cold-drawn carbon seamless tube. A substantial proportion of tube output is exported from the UK. Continuing competitive pressures and the changing nature of demand from both home and export markets are forcing reappraisal of TI Group's approach to tube manufacture. TI Group sees the maintenance of manufacturing competitiveness as a key element of securing a profitable future, and policy now requires operating subsidiaries to give full weight to manufacturing considerations when formulating their business strategies. Against this background, TI Group tube manufacturing companies are devising plans and making fundamental changes to apply advanced manufacturing technology to their processes and manufacturing control systems so as to give a more flexible response to market demand whilst achieving further cost reductions.

In a new era of booming information technology, E-commerce has become an important developing country in China, and parents and students have gradually welcomed this profession. In the information age, how to improve the quality of training in professional higher education and then meet the employment needs of industries and enterprises has become a key issue for higher vocational education in China. This article mainly studies the E-commerce professional talent training model based on identity inheritance. This article analyzes the current situation of E-commerce talent training, combines pragmatism, and proposes strategies for training talented E-commerce experts in underdeveloped western regions. The theory of business talent development has certain theoretical significance for guiding and promoting electronic trade and socioeconomic development. The research in this article shows that despite a large number of international trade graduates every year, the electronic trading group (70.1%) is still international trade, and 85.9% of companies still believe that there is a gap between transnational E-commerce traders. In order to “effectively connect” the training of E-commerce talents in higher vocational education and social needs, it is necessary to take the needs of industrial development as the driving force and market demand as the guidance and take practical measures to improve the school-enterprise matching. The distance between talents ultimately promotes professional construction and talent training and achieves a win-win situation for both schools and enterprises.

Bletilla striata (Thunb. ex A. Murray) Rchb. f., a species of perennial herb of orchidaceae that has remarkable effects and high economic value, has been intensively studied by many scholars. Although this herb has many seeds, the germination rate is exceptionally low, which leads to decreased germplasm resources and increased market demand every year. To solve this problem, this study examined the aseptic germination system and the direct seeding technology system. On Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, 2.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) and 1.0 mg/L naphthylacetic acid (NAA) were added before seed germination, and 70 g/L banana juice and 0.5 mg/L NAA were added when rooting. Then, the seedlings were transplanted to a mixed substrate of humus, river sand, and bark (volume ratio of 3:1:1). The direct seeding system consists of substrate treatment, sowing, seedling raising, seedling growth, and transplanting. Turfy soil, Huangjiang residue, and river sand were selected as the substrate. The results revealed that the germination rate was increased to 91.8%, whereas the plantlet regeneration was increased to 82.0%. After 180 days of cultivation, the plants could be transplanted as finished seedlings. The establishment of B. striata seedling system provides a safe, rapid, reliable production technology route for industrial development.

Energy is considered the main input for economic and industrial development. In this context, it is important that countries develop sustainable energy policies in order to meet economic growth and energy demand. Government policies play a critical role in economic growth and incentives for innovation. This chapter summarizes Bulgaria's energy policies as an increasingly important energy transit country due to its strategic location. These policies were presented in line with the European Union energy policies and the solutions of the characteristics of the country. Some of the targets to be implemented are as follows: ensuring energy supply security, achieving RES share targets, energy efficiency improvements, development of a competitive energy market, safe energy needs and protection of consumers, establishment of the necessary infrastructure and diversification of energy resources, strengthening the external relations and solidarity coordinated in the field of energy.

PurposeThe wide uptake of green building is hindered by factors such as limited market demand and high up-front cost despite substantial policy incentives. Successful business models (BMs) help facilitate the diffusion of sustainable innovation and have attracted increasing attention. However, little attention has been paid to examining the adoption of green building from the perspective of BM. This paper aims to identify the characteristics of BM that companies adopted to deliver green building projects and examine the evolution path of BM for green buildings.Design/methodology/approachA total of 744 interdisciplinary bibliographic records related to BM and green buildings from the Web of Science Core Collection database have been identified from the Web of Science Core Collection and analyzed through co-author analysis, co-word analysis and co-citation analysis.FindingsBM research mainly focuses on five subjects, namely, environmental science, engineering, business, economics, science and technology. Keywords “strategy”, “capability”, “perspective” and “design” receive the highest centrality index, which suggests that the strategy design and corporate capability are indispensable elements when designing or innovating a company's BM. “BM canvas” and “resource based view” received the burst citations in the recent decade. Twelve research clusters are identified, including performance evaluation, waste management, energy efficiency, BM, project business, professional capital, leadership and product innovation. These topics highlight three evolution direction for green building projects, i.e. life cycle-oriented value proposition, collaborative value delivery and innovative cost and revenue structure.Originality/valueThe findings contribute to a systematic understanding of the underlying mechanisms of BM for green buildings and illuminate the development trend of business strategies for sustainability.
