The impact of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on the migration and toxicity of coexisting pollutants is still unclear, especially in soil media. This study aims to evaluate the impact of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on the phytotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) to Oryza sativa L., and the migration of cadmium (Cd) in the soil-rice system. Three different Cd stress groups (C1 group: 1.0 mg kg−1, C2 group: 2.5 mg kg−1 and C3 group: 5.0 mg kg−1) were set in the pot experiment, and the target concentration of TiO2 NPs in each group were 0 mg kg−1 (T0), 50 mg kg−1 (T1), 100 mg kg−1 (T2) and 500 mg kg−1 (T3). Plant height and biomass decreased with the increasing of Cd content in paddy soil. TiO2 NPs could lower the phytotoxicity of Cd in terms of the changes in the morphological and biochemical characteristics, especially in the tillering and booting stage. In the tillering stage, TiO2 NPs addition caused a significant increase in plant height, biomass and the total chlorophyll content in the leaves of Oryza saliva L. In the booting stage, TiO2 NPs addition caused a 15% to 32% and 24% to 48% reduction of malondialdehyde (MDA) content for the C2 and C3 group, respectively, compared to that of the respective control treatment (T0). TiO2-NPs addition reduced the activity of peroxidase (POD) in the leaves in the booting and heading stage, and the activity of catalase (CAT) in the tillering stage. In the C1 and C2 group, the grain Cd content in the 100 and 500 mg kg−1 TiO2 NPs treatments reached 0.47–0.84 mg kg−1, obviously higher than that of the treatment without TiO2 NPs (0.27–0.32 mg kg−1), suggesting that TiO2-NPs could promote Cd migration in the soil-rice system.

Abstract A short-term phytotoxicity experiment was conducted on four varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under the influence of arsenic (III & V) to evaluate the impact on root and coleoptiles growth. Four varieties (GB-1, IET-4786, IET-4094, and MTU-1010) of rice were undertaken for this study with different concentrations (0, 5, 10, 25 and 50 mg/L) of arsenic (III & V). Germination along with mean daily germination (MDG), length of root and coleoptile, water holding capacity of root and coleoptiles, fresh and dry weight, arsenic accumulation, MDA and root ion leakage were evaluated. Results highlighted that the percent germination of IET-4094 and MTU-1010 varieties of rice seed over control decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing concentration of both arsenite and arsenate. However, the percent germination of GB-I and IET-4786 dose not affected on the different concentration of both arsenate and arsenite. The root and coleoptile length of all the four varieties showed remarkable decreasing trend over control with increasing concentration of both arsenite and arsenate. However, more pronounced effects were observed for arsenite than arsenate. Similarly, biomass of shoot is less affected than root under different concentration of arsenite and arsenate. The variety IET-4786 and MTU-1010, accumulated lower level of arsenic and variety GB-1 accumulate higher level of MDA level in root under both arsenite and arsenate treatments. Therefore, it can be concluded that the variety IET-4786 and MTU-1010 are the suitable varieties towards phytoremediation of both arsenite and arsenate. Moreover, farmers of arsenic contaminated area are recommended to cultivate IET-4786 and MTU-1010 varieties.

Abstract In the present study, transgenic cry1Ac-APX plants were developed in popular rice variety, BPT 5204, employing Agrobacterium LBA4404 harbouring pcam-cry1Ac-APX vector. The transgenic plants generated were analysed based on herbicide (Basta) toleranceand molecular analyses. Seeds of T1 generation when germinated on MS medium containing 4 mg/l phosphinothricin (ppt) revealed 3 tolerant: 1 susceptible plants suggesting that the trangenes showed monogenic segregation. Homozygous lines were identified by 100% germination of T3 seed on PPT containing media. Abiotic stress assays of analysis cry1Ac-APX transgenic lines showed enhanced chlorophyll, proline and reducing sugars compared to untransformed control plants. The antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT showed significantly higher levels in transgenic lines than UC.RT- PCR analyses revelled increased expression levels of drought related genes OsDREB, OsMYB and bZIP under both stressed and without stress conditions. Further, the pcam-cry1Ac-APX lines exhibited enhanced biomass and yield than UC.
