Oxytetracycline (OTC), also known commercially as Terramycin, was determined to be more stable in honey than in buffered aqueous solutions at similar pH values and temperatures. A rapid high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed to detect and quantitate OTC using a 1:1 dilution (wt/wt) of honey samples in water. Using 355 nm as the wavelength of detection, amounts as low as 0.5 μg/ml could be detected in the above solution. The limits of detection were lowered considerably by a double extraction procedure.

Results are presented on the rate of thiamin cleavage by sulphite in aqueous solutions as affected by temperature (20–70°), pH(2·5–7·0), and variation of the concentration of either thiamin (1–20μm) or sulphite (10–5000μm as sulphur dioxide). Plots of the logarithm of percentage of residual thiamin against time were found to be linear and cleavage thus was first-order with respect to thiamin. At pH5 the rate was also found to be proportional to the sulphite concentration. In the pH region 2·5–7·0 at 25° the rate constant was 50m−1hr.−1 at pH5·5–6·0, and decreased at higher or lower pH values. The rate of reaction increased between 20° and 70°, indicating a heat of activation of 13·6kcal./mole.

Abstract In this work, the ability of chrome shavings and of crust leather buffing dusts to remove dyes from aqueous solutions has been studied. Buffing dusts proved to be a much better adsorbent than chrome shavings for cationic dyes. The adsorption of anionic dyes is very important on two studied wastes. The pH has an obvious influence on the adsorption of dyes. Adsorption of cationic dyes is less favourable under acidic conditions (pH <3.5) and at high pH values (pH >10.5). The adsorption of anionic dyes on both adsorbents is more favourable under acidic conditions (pH <3). The adsorption on chrome shavings is improved by the use of finer particles. The kinetic adsorption was also studied. Adsorption isotherms, at the optimum operating conditions, were determined. Adsorption follows the Langmuir model. The isotherm parameters have been calculated. The column technique could be applied to treat significant volumes of solutions.

ABSTRACTWe have demonstrated a template-free, site-specific, and scalable electrochemical method for the fabrication of individually addressable conducting polymer nanoframework electrode junctions in a parallel-oriented array. These conducting polymer nanoframeworks, which are composed of numerous intercrossing conducting polymer nanowires that have uniform diameters ranging from 40 to 150 nm, can be used for the chemical sensing of HCl and NH3 gases and organic vapors and for sensing pH values of aqueous solutions.

In this work, amphoteric cryogels based on N,N-dimethyl acrylamide, methacrylic acid and allylamine, crosslinked by N,N-methylenebisacrylamide were synthesized by free-radical polymerization in cryo-conditions. The synthesized cryogels were used for the removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions under different pH values. The chemical structure was studied by FTIR, porosity by nitrogen adsorption and morphology by scanning electron microscopy and texture analyzer. The amphoteric properties of cryogels were studied by zeta potential measurements. Adsorption tests revealed that cryogels exhibit 3 times higher adsorption capacity at pH 6.0 than at pH 4.0. The maximum adsorption capacity of the amphoteric cryogels for Cd2+ was 113 mg/g, at pH 6.0 and initial Cd2+ concentration 100 ppm. The results suggest that the predominant removal mechanism is ion exchange between sodium, which initially presents in the structure of the cryogel, and cadmium from the aqueous phase. Recovery studies suggested that the cryogels used can be regenerated and efficiently reused.

Utilization of agricultural and industrial wastes for metal removal from aqueous solutions In this study a possibility of obtaining sorbents from basketry wastes has been investigated. Therefore, adsorption of cadmium ions on wicker bark of Salix americana has been studied. The obtained experimental results were described by the Freundlich equation and adsorption kinetics by the pseudo-second order equation. The effect of pH on cadmium ions adsorption by S. americana was also investigated. It has been found that for the pH values ranging from 2 to 7 cadmium removal from the solution was held at almost constant level.

To study the reaction of the solvated electron with 5-bromouracil an aqueous solution has been examined by conductometric pulse radiolysis at pH values between 4.68 and 8.74. Alcohol was added to scavenge the hydrogen atom and the hydroxyl radical. G(Br—) = (2.64 ± 0.08)/100 eV was found to be independent of the pH. The mobility of the bromouracil mono-anion was measured to be (2.7 ± 0.2) 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 20°C, and the rate constant of reaction (3b) was determined to be k(H+ BrUr-) = (2.3 ± 0.2) 1010 I mole-1 s-1*.
