In order to investigate the multi-axial mechanical properties of a kind of PU (polyurethane) foam, some experiments in different loading conditions including uni-axial tension, uni-axial compression, hydrostatic compression and three-point bending were conducted. It is shown that the hydrostatic component influences yield behavior of PU foam, the yield strength and degree of strain hardening in hydrostatic compression exceed those for uni-axial compression. In terms of the differential hardening constitutive model, the evolution of PU foam yield surface and plastic hardening laws were fitted from experimental data. A finite element method was applied to analyze the quasi-static responses of the PU foam sandwich beam subjected to three-point bending, and good agreement was observed between experimental load-displacement responses and computational predictions, which validated the multi-axial loading methods and stress-strain constitutive model parameters. Moreover, effects of two foam models applied to uni-axial loading and multi-axial loading conditions were analyzed and compared with three-point bending tests and simulations. It is found that the multi-axial constitutive model can bring more accurate prediction whose parameters are obtained from the tests above mentioned.

In response to the major challenges faced by China’s transition to green low-carbon energy under the dual-carbon goal, the use of energy Internet cross-boundary thinking will help to develop research on the integration of renewable clean energy and buildings. Energy piles are a new building-energy-saving technology that uses geothermal energy in the shallow soil of the Earth’s surface as a source of cold (heat) to achieve heating in winter and cooling in summer. It is a complex thermomechanical working process that changes the temperature of the rock and soil around the pile, and the temperature change significantly influences the mechanical properties of natural loess. Although the soil temperature can be easily and quickly obtained by using sensors connected to the Internet of Things, the mechanical properties of natural loess will change greatly under the influence of temperature. To explore the influence of temperature on the stress–strain relationship of structural loess, the undrained triaxial consolidation tests were carried out under different temperatures (5, 20, 50 and 70∘C) and different confining pressures (50, 100, 200 and 400[Formula: see text]kPa), and a binary-medium model was introduced to simulate the stress–strain relationship. By introducing the damage rate under temperature change conditions, a binary-medium model of structural loess under variable temperature conditions was established, and the calculation method of the model parameters was proposed. Finally, the calculated results were compared with the test results. The calculation results showed that the established model has good applicability.

A visco-elastic model of the mechanical properties of muscle was used to describe age-differences in the buildup of force in isometric elbow flexion. Given information from the literature on age-related physiological changes, such as decreasing connective-tissue elasticity, one would expect changes in the mechanical properties of skeletal muscle and their related model parameters. Force vs. time curves were obtained for 7 young (aged 21–27) and 7 old (aged 69–83) female subject. There were significant age group differences in steady-state force level and the best fitting model parameters. In particular, the viscous damping element of the model plays a large role in describing the increased time to reach steady-state force levels in the older subject group. Implications of this research include incorporating parameter differences into more complex models, such as crash impact models.

Due to its ecological interest and large availability, a renewed attention is paid to earth as building material. Indeed, raw earth consumes CO2 only during its processing and transportation, and it provides a natural hygrothermal comfort. However, its mechanical properties are highly linked to its composition, which causes an important variability of performances. That is why any soil has to be characterized before being used as a building material. The aim of this study is to propose a model able to predict the hydromechanical behavior of a reconstituted soil according to its composition. As earth is a heterogeneous material, the model is based on homogenization procedures. The sand is considered as spherical inclusions inside a clay matrix. The particularity of the model stands to consider both positive and negative effects of volume variation and mechanical properties of clay under hydric variations. The model parameters are determined according to an original experimental campaign, which is conducted on various mixes of a single type of clay (kaolinite) and of sand, and water. The experimental study provides some mechanical properties of the mixes versus water content and sand content to test the ability of the homogenization model to assess the main properties of this material.

Epoxy modification of asphalt binders has been recognized as a very effective technology to alter the chemistry of asphaltic materials in such a way that long-lasting pavement structures can be designed. However, the phenomena that are involved to build up the physico-mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt systems are still unknown. The focus of this paper is on understanding the link between chemistry and the mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt binders during the thermo-irreversible process of chemical hardening. For this purpose, a constitutive model for predicting the evolution of cure-induced stresses in epoxy asphalt binders is proposed, and an experimental program was developed to determine the model parameters. The cure dependency of physico-mechanical parameters of modified binder was obtained and imported into the model to simulate the build-up of material properties during (non-)isothermal hardening of epoxy asphalt binder. The model is implemented in a commercially finite element tool by coupling the chemical, thermal, and mechanical phenomena with multi-physics strategies, and the results are analyzed to identify the influence of different heating conditions on the crosslinking density and subsequently on stress build-up. It was found that the amount of stress build-up during curing was strongly dependent on the heating conditions, and a higher rate of stress build-up was observed at higher applied temperatures. In other words, the processing conditions during in-plant material production or in-field manufacturing of structures made by epoxy asphalt systems affect the material hardening and subsequently the desired functionalities of pavement structures.

Al 7068-T651 alloy is one of the recently developed materials used mostly in the defense industry due to its high strength, toughness, and low weight compared to steels. The aim of this study is to identify the Johnson–Cook (J–C) material model parameters, the accurate Johnson–Cook (J–C) damage parameters, D1, D2, and D3 of the Al 7068-T651 alloy for finite element analysis-based simulation techniques, together with other damage parameters, D4 and D5. In order to determine D1, D2, and D3, tensile tests were conducted on notched and smooth specimens at medium strain rate, 100 s−1, and tests were repeated seven times to ensure the consistency of the results both in the rolling direction and perpendicular to the rolling direction. To determine D4 and D5 further, tensile tests were conducted on specimens at high strain rate (102 s−1) and temperature (300 °C) by means of the Gleeble thermal–mechanical physical simulation system. The final areas of fractured specimens were calculated through optical microscopy. The effects of stress triaxiality factor, rolling direction, strain rate, and temperature on the mechanical properties of the Al 7068-T651 alloy were also investigated. Damage parameters were calculated via the Levenberg–Marquardt optimization method. From all the aforementioned experimental work, J–C material model parameters were determined. In this article, J–C damage model constants, based on maximum and minimum equivalent strain values, were also reported which can be utilized for the simulation of different applications.

Binder material is the most expensive raw component of concrete; thus, scientists are looking for cheaper substitute materials. This paper shows that when manufacturing, a part of the binder material of expanded-clay lightweight concrete can be replaced with active filler. The conducted studies show that technogenic – catalyst waste could act as similar filler. The study also includes the dependence of the physical and mechanical properties of expanded-clay lightweight concrete on the concrete mixture and the chemical composition of the samples obtained. Different formation and composition mixtures of expanded-clay lightweight concrete were chosen to determine the properties of physical-mechanical properties such as density, water absorption and compressive strength.

As major extracellular matrix components, elastin, and collagen play crucial roles in regulating the mechanical properties of the aortic wall and, thus, the normal cardiovascular function. The mechanical properties of aorta, known to vary with age and multitude of diseases as well as the proximity to the heart, have been attributed to the variations in the content and architecture of wall constituents. This study is focused on the role of layer-specific collagen undulation in the variation of mechanical properties along the porcine descending thoracic aorta. Planar biaxial tensile tests are performed to characterize the hyperelastic anisotropic mechanical behavior of tissues dissected from four locations along the thoracic aorta. Multiphoton microscopy is used to image the associated regional microstructure. Exponential-based and recruitment-based constitutive models are used to account for the observed mechanical behavior while considering the aortic wall as a composite of two layers with independent properties. An elevated stiffness is observed in distal regions compared to proximal regions of thoracic aorta, consistent with sharper and earlier collagen recruitment estimated for medial and adventitial layers in the models. Multiphoton images further support our prediction that higher stiffness in distal regions is associated with less undulation in collagen fibers. Recruitment-based models further reveal that regardless of the location, collagen in the media is recruited from the onset of stretching, whereas adventitial collagen starts to engage with a delay. A parameter sensitivity analysis is performed to discriminate between the models in terms of the confidence in the estimated model parameters.
