Copper-based electrical contact materials were prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method and powder metallurgy with the addition of different proportions of rare earth (RE) element. It is found that SPS method greatly enhances the density, hardness and conductivity of the composite materials, thus improving their comprehensive properties. Compared with powder metallurgy, SPS boasts a shorter sintering time, smaller compression force and higher efficiency. RE has considerable influence on the comprehensive properties of copper-based electrical contact materials. When the content of RE lower than 0.1%, the comprehensive properties can be improved by increasing RE.

Abstract Ti3GeC2 compound has excellent electrical and mechanical properties, which can be used as a potential reinforcement for Ag-based electrical contact materials. However, few reports have been addressed on the synthesis of its powders. The present study, therefore, presents a new route to fabricate high-purity Ti3GeC2 powders from Ti/Ge/TiC by pressureless sintering in vacuum. The influence of sintering temperature and Ge content on the powder purity was studied and the optimized conditions are found to be 1550 ℃ and Ti:Ge:TiC=1:1.1:2. In addition, the reaction path of Ti/Ge/TiC was revealed to be three steps: First, liquid Ge starts to react with Ti to form Ti5Ge3 compounds at around 1140 ℃; Then Ti5Ge3 consumes the liquid Ge and TiC to form Ti2GeC at around 1200 ℃; Finally, Ti2GeC transfers into Ti3GeC2 with the consumption of residual TiC. The present study lays the foundation for the subsequent applications of Ti3GeC2 powders in high performance composites.

AbstractAn electrical contractor is one which plays significant role in day todays life in industries as well as in home appliances. In current scenario the materials for conducting purpose has an overwhelming research capability. Now a day the silver based electrical contact composite material have provided the potential applications in aerospace and automobile industries. Among silver based contact material the silver cadmium oxide and silver tin oxide plays a vital role in fabrication of electrical contactors. In this research an attempt has been made to study the influence of adding Aluminum with silver based electrical contact composite materials by two different processing routes namely stir-casting and powder metallurgy. Silver and aluminum matrix plays a virtual role in composite world owing to their highest conductivity. Optimum parameters were identified for attaining the maximum properties such as conductivity, hardness, density, and porosity of composition. By this better conducting property and mechanical property of the electrical contact can be improved by this system. Thus a screening test has be conducted with addition of Al with silver tin oxide compositions hence this paper aims to process the aluminum - silver based electrical contact materials by stir casting processing and powder metallurgy route and compare the results obtained.

A new method of carbon nanotube with electroless plating of nickel is proposed. It is shown that in a certain condition, the compacted and well-distributed coating of nickel is obtained without the process of sensitization and activation. Upon the surface treatment of the carbon nanotube, the CNT-consolidated composites for copper-based electrical contact have been made in the way of powder metallurgy. Some important mechanical properties and physical properties, including sliding wear property, electrical conductivity and fusion resistance, were investigated. The experiment results showed that Carbon nanotube inside the composite was uniformly distributed and a proper addition of CNT effectively improves the comprehensive property of the composites. When the carbon nanotube takes up 4vol. % in the material, it is highly effective in improving its sliding wear property and fusion resistance; though its electrical conductivity drops. Its overall properties meet the requirements of electrical contact materials

Copper-based materials are common industrial products which have been broadly applied to the fields of powder metallurgy, electrical contact, and heat exchangers, etc. However, the ease of surface oxidation limits the durability and effectiveness of copper-based components. Here, we have developed a powder metallurgy process to fabricate graphene/copper composites using copper powders which were first deposited with graphene layers by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The graphene/copper composites embedded with an interconnected graphene network was then able to be obtained by vacuum hot-pressing. After thermal oxidation (up to 220 °C) in humid air for several hours, we found that the degree of surface oxidation of our samples was much less than that of their pure Cu counterpart and our samples produced a much smaller increase of interfacial contact resistance when used as electrical contact materials. As a result, our graphene/copper composites showed a significant enhancement of oxidation resistance ability (≈5.6 times) compared to their pure Cu counterpart, thus offering potential applications as novel electrical contact materials.
