Night eating syndrome (NES) is a disordered eating behaviour characterized by hyperphagia at night and is often accompanied by a sleep disturbance. This study aims to determine the prevalence of NES and its association between sleep quality and body mass index (BMI) among the private university students during the Covid-19. A total of 166 students from a private university participated in this cross-sectional study. Online self-administered questionnaires were used to collect and determine socio-demographic data, BMI, NES, and sleep quality. NES was assessed using Night Eating Diagnostic Questionnaire (NEDQ) while sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Questionnaire (PSQI). The results showed that 38.6% of the participants were engaging with NES, 45.2% were having poor sleep quality and 25.9% were overweight or obese during the Covid-19. There were significant associations between NES with sleep quality and BMI, which students with NES were found to have poorer sleep quality (r=0.306, p<0.001) and higher BMI (r=0.024, p=0.763). In addition, poor sleep quality was found to be positively associated with BMI (r=0.161, p=0.038). Males (AOR=2.198, 95% CI=1.005-4.808) and poor sleepers (AOR=1.176, 95% CI=1.028-1.346) were the risk factors of NES. In conclusion, the prevalence of NES, poor sleep quality, and overweight and obesity were at an alarming rate. NES was found to be related to both poorer sleep quality and higher BMI among the students. Therefore, interventions such as behavioural and cognitive therapy should be implemented to promote healthy eating behaviour among university students.

Abstract Introduction Late night eating has been associated with higher odds of being overweight or obese. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between late night eating and body mass index in a nationally representative sample. Methods Actigraphy was used to estimate the average bedtime, waketime, duration and midpoint of sleep in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-04 and 2005-06 cohorts. Given the circular nature of clock time, the average was calculated to be the point that minimized the sum of squares of differences between time points. Dietary data was collected through two detailed interviews of the participants. Nighttime calories were defined as the average amount of calories consumed between the average bedtime and the average midpoint of time-in-bed, based on the data recorded during the dietary interviews. Results Higher average nighttime caloric consumption (in units of 100 kcal) was associated with higher BMI [B(95% CI): 0.062 (0.003, 0.121)]; this remained significant after adjustment for age, gender, and race [B(95% CI): 0.084 (0.026, 0.142)]. Higher nighttime caloric consumption (as a percentage of total average daily calories consumption) was associated with higher BMI [B(95% CI): 1.522 (0.312, 2.733)]. This remained significant after adjustment for age, gender, and race [B(95% CI): 1.718 (0.505, 2.931)]. Conclusion Higher nighttime caloric consumption, both in average amount (in units of 100 kcal) and as a percentage of average daily calories consumption, was associated with higher BMI. Additional study is needed to further elucidate the relationship between nighttime eating habits and body mass index. Support NHLBI T32HL110952

Background and Aims: Cord blood leptin may reflect the leptinemic status of a newborn at birth more accurately than the leptin values of blood collected from other sites. The present study was undertaken to determine the relationship of cord serum leptin concentration at birth with neonatal and maternal anthropometric parameters. Materials and Methods: Blood was taken from the umbilical cord of the babies at delivery. Maternal anthropometric measurements were recorded at admission for delivery. Neonatal anthropometric measurements were recorded within 48 hours after delivery. Linear regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between cord serum leptin concentration and anthropometric parameters of the baby and the mother. Both Serum leptin and serum C-peptide levels were measured by chemiluminescence-based ELISA method. Results: The leptin concentration (ng/ml, mean±SD) in cord blood was 39.13±14.44. Cord leptin levels correlated with birth weight (r=0.673, p<0.0001), ponderal index (r=0.732, p<0.0001) but it did not correlate with maternal body mass index, gestational age (r=0.135, p=0.349) at delivery or cord serum C-peptide concentration (r=-0.049, p=0.735) or placental weight (r=0.203, p=0.157). Conclusion: There are associations between cord leptin concentration at delivery and birth weight, ponderal index (PI) of the babies but not body mass index (BMI) of the mothers. High leptin levels of the baby could represent an important feedback modulator of substrate supply and subsequently for adipose tissue status during late gestation. AbstractObjectivesThe combination of sleep duration, television (TV) time and body mass index (BMI) may be related to the alteration of cardiometabolic risk. However, there are few studies that use these variables grouped, and showing the moderating role of age. This study aimed to verify if the combination of sleep duration, TV time and BMI is associated with cardiometabolic risk and the moderating role of age in this relationship in youth.MethodsCross-sectional study conducted with 1411 adolescents (611 male), aged 10–17 years. Sleep duration, TV time and BMI were assessed and grouped into eight categories. Cardiometabolic risk was assessed by a continuous metabolic risk score, including the following variables: low HDL-cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, dysglycemia, high systolic blood pressure, high waist circumference and low cardiorespiratory fitness. Generalized linear models were used to test moderation of age in the relationship between the eight categories of sleep duration/television time/BMI with cardiometabolic risk.ResultsCardiometabolic risk factor showed association with all overweight or obesity independent of sleep time and TV time. Age moderated the relationship between sleep duration/television time/BMI with cardiometabolic risk. This association was stronger in younger adolescents (11 and 13 years), indicating that individuals with inadequate sleep, prolonged TV time and overweight/obesity present higher cardiometabolic risk values when compared to 15-year-old adolescents.ConclusionOverweight/obesity, independently of sleep duration and TV time, is the main risk factor for cardiometabolic disorders in adolescence. When moderated by age, younger adolescents that presented the combination of risk factors had higher cardiometabolic risk.

Background:Several studies have evaluated the association between serum adiponectin levels and knee and hand osteoarthritis (OA), with mixed results.Objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between OA and serum adiponectin levels according to the radiographic features of knee and hand OA.Methods:A total of 2,402 subjects were recruited from the Dong-gu Study. Baseline characteristics were collected via a questionnaire, and X-rays of knee and hand joints were scored by a semi-quantitative grading system. The relationship between serum adiponectin levels and radiographic severity was evaluated by linear regression analysis.Results:Subjects with higher tertiles of serum adiponectin were older and had a lower body mass index than those with lower tertiles. In the knee joint scores, serum adiponectin levels were positively associated with the total score (P<0.001), osteophyte score (P=0.003), and joint space narrowing (JSN) score (P<0.001) among the three tertiles after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, education, and physical activity. In the hand joint scores, no association was found between serum adiponectin levels and the total score, osteophyte score, JSN score, subchondral cyst score, sclerosis score, erosion score, and malalignment score among the three tertiles after adjustment.Conclusion:In this study, we found that increased adiponectin levels were associated with higher radiographic scores in the knee joint, but not in the hand joint, suggesting different pathophysiologic mechanisms in the development of OA.Disclosure of Interests:None declared
