Herein, we report a greener, non-toxic, cost effective and a modest scheme for the fabrication of excellent CdSe nanocrystals (NCs). Precursors for the present reaction are synthesized by the treatment of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) with 2-pyridyl selenolate (NaSeC5H4N) resulting a complex of the formula [(C5H4NSe)2Cd]. The complex is characterized by NMR (1H and 13C) and IR spectroscopies. The complex, [(C5H4NSe)2Cd] is found to be polymeric in nature, as indicated by its insolubility in solvents, and is further customized as a single-source pioneers for the preparation of colloidal CdSe NCs. Thermolysis of [(C5H4NSe)2 Cd] has been successfully carried out by hotinjection method using low-cost and harmless oleic acid (OA) as the coordinating solvent, thereby rejecting the need of air-sensitive and toxic solvents. Based upon dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique, the average size of colloidal CdSe NCs are determined using particle size analyzer. The average size of colloidal NCs comes out to be 6.3 nm. Thin films of colloidal CdSe NCs are deposited on glass substrate using drop-casting (DC) and ultrasonic substrate vibration assisted drop casting (SVADC) methods to study their use as workable materials for engineering devices. The films are characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), photoluminescence (PL) studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques.

Thin film magnetic media are being used as low cost, high density forms of information storage. The development of this technology requires the study, at the sub-micron level, of morphological, crystallographic, and magnetic properties, throughout the depth of the deposited films. As the microstructure becomes increasingly fine, widi grain sizes approaching 100Å, the unique characterization capabilities of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have become indispensable to the analysis of such thin film magnetic media.Films were deposited at 225°C, on two NiP plated Al substrates, one polished, and one circumferentially textured with a mean roughness of 55Å. Three layers, a 750Å chromium underlayer, a 600Å layer of magnetic alloy of composition Co84Cr14Ta2, and a 300Å amorphous carbon overcoat were then sputter deposited using a dc magnetron system at a power of 1kW, in a chamber evacuated below 10-6 torr and filled to 12μm Ar pressure. The textured medium is presently used in industry owing to its high coercivity, Hc, and relatively low noise. One important feature is that the coercivity in the circumferential read/write direction is significandy higher than that in the radial direction.

Highly hydrophobic and superhydrophobic materials obtained from recycled polymers represent an interesting challenge to recycle and reuse advanced performance materials after their first life. In this article, we present a simple and low-cost method to fabricate a superhydrophobic surface by employing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder in polystyrene (PS) dispersion. With respect to the literature, the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) was prepared by utilizing a spray- coating technique at room temperature, a glass substrate without any further modification or thermal treatment, and which can be applied onto a large area and on to any type of material with some degree of fine control over the wettability properties. The prepared surface showed superhydrophobic behavior with a water contact angle (CA) of 170°; furthermore, the coating was characterized with different techniques, such as a 3D confocal profilometer, to measure the average roughness of the coating, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize the surface morphology. In addition, the durability of SH coating was investigated by a long-water impact test (raining test), thermal treatment at high temperature, an abrasion test, and in acidic and alkaline environments. The present study may suggest an easy and scalable method to produce SHS PS/PTFE films that may find implementation in various fields.

Conventional sol-gel solutions have received significant attention in thin-film transistor (TFT) manufacturing because of their advantages such as simple processing, large-scale applicability, and low cost. However, conventional sol-gel processed zinc tin oxide (ZTO) TFTs have a thermal limitation in that they require high annealing temperatures of more than 500 °C, which are incompatible with most flexible plastic substrates. In this study, to overcome the thermal limitation of conventional sol-gel processed ZTO TFTs, we demonstrated a ZTO TFT that was fabricated at low annealing temperatures of 350 °C using self-combustion. The optimized device exhibited satisfactory performance, with μsat of 4.72 cm2/V∙s, Vth of −1.28 V, SS of 0.86 V/decade, and ION/OFF of 1.70 × 106 at a low annealing temperature of 350 °C for one hour. To compare a conventional sol-gel processed ZTO TFT with the optimized device, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TG-DTA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were implemented.
