AbstractThe reuse of waste materials in civil engineering projects has become the topic for many researchers due to their economic and environmental benefits. In this study, brick dust waste (BDW) derived from cutting of masonry bricks and demolition waste which are normally dumped as land fill is used as partial replacement of cement in a concrete mix at 10%, 20% and 30% respectively, with the aim of achieving high strength in concrete using less cement due to the environmental problems associated with the cement production. To ascertain the effects of BDW on the consistency and mechanical performance of concrete mix, laboratory investigations on the workability of fresh concrete and the strength of hardened concrete were carried out. Slump and compaction index test were carried out on fresh concrete mix and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test and tensile strength test were conducted on hardened concrete specimen after 7, 14 and 28 days of curing. The results showed high UCS and tensile strength with the addition of 10% BDW to the concrete mix, hence achieving the set target in accordance with the relevant British standards. A gradual reduction in strength was observed as BDW content increases, however, recording good workability as slump and compaction index results fell within the set target range in accordance with relevant British standards. Findings from this study concluded that BDW can partially replace cement in a concrete mix to up to 30% igniting the path to a cleaner production of novel concrete using BDW in construction work.

The experimental investigation on alternate concrete from aged volcanic ash or hydrated aluminium silicate was done by partially replacing bentonite with OPC. For industrial purpose bentonite is available in two forms sodium bentonite and calcium bentonite. The total resources of bentonite in the country as per UNFC system are about 531 million tonnes. The partial replacement of bentonite with cement leads to reduction of cement content in concrete mix. Concrete specimens were casted and examined for the 7th, 14th and 28th days respectively. A mix ratio of 1:2:4 was adopted for 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% replacement of bentonite with cement. Test were conducted on fresh concrete and hardened concrete. Estimated results was computed for all concrete samples replaced with bentonite based on the test result done.

The water-cement ratio of fresh concrete is recognized as the one factor that affects the strength and durability of an adequately compacted concrete mix. Although water-cement ratio is the predominant factor affecting strength of hardened concrete, currently no widely used, reliable method is available for measuring water-cement ratio in the field. A prototype device has been developed to measure the water-cement ratio of a plastic concrete mix. The method is based on the measurement of turbidity of water-cement slurry separated out of a concrete mixture by pressure sieving. Consistent results were obtained for air-entrained and non-air-entrained concrete. Statistical analyses of the test results have shown that this meter can measure the water-cement ratio of fresh concrete with an accuracy of ±0.01 on the water-cement ratio scale for a single test at a 90 percent confidence interval. The equipment will cost less than $10,000. If the method works as well in the field as it does in the laboratory, accurate determination of water-cement ratio could dramatically improve the ability of the concrete industry to ensure the quality of concrete construction.

The research results of stability of air-entrainment of concrete acc. PN-EN 480-1 in case of innovate air-entraining multi-component cement CEM II/B-V is presented in the paper. The influence of PCE, naphthalene and phosphonamidite based superplasticizers and w/c ratio: 0.45, 0.50 and 0.55 on air-entrainment and consistency of fresh concrete mix was investigated. The research results indicated that with increasing w/c ratio the air-entrainment of concrete increases. Moreover, in case of an increase in the degree of liquidity of the air-entrained concrete made of participation of the innovative, air-entraining multi-component cement CEM II/B-V, first and new generation superplasticizers based on modified naphthalene, and then modified phosphonamidite should be used. PCE based superplasticizer cause the too high air-entrainment of concrete. The research results proved, that the porosity of hardened concrete meets the European standards for frost-resistant concrete.

Rice husk ash (RHA) is a by-product of the rice milling industry. Near about 20 million tonnes of RHA is produced annually which creates environmental pollution. Utilization of RHA as a supplementary cementitious material adds sustainability to concrete by reducing CO2 emission of cement production. But, the percentage of utilization of RHA is very less. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation to study the effects of partial replacement of fine aggregate with RHA on mechanical properties of conventional and self-compacting concrete (SCC). The fine aggregate is replaced by RHA in conventional concrete (CC) with six different percentage by weight such as 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% having w/c ratio 0.375 with variation of super plasticiser dose, whereas in SCC the replacement of fine aggregate by RHA is 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%. The design mix for CC is targeted for M30 grade concrete. The fresh concrete test of SCC is conducted by using slump flow, T500, J-ring, L-box, U-box and V-funnel to know the filling ability, flow ability and passing ability of SCC. As fresh concrete property concerned, the result indicates that the slump flow value satisfied the EFNARC 2005 guidelines upto 30% replacement of fine aggregate with RHA whereas 40% replacement did not satisfy the guideline. As hardened concrete property concerned, the compressive strength, split-tensile strength and flexural strength of CC and SCC are determined at 7, 28 and 90 days. The test result indicates that upto 30% replacement of fine aggregate with RHA enhances the strength in CC whereas the strength enhancement in SCC upto 20% replacement.

This study was undertaken to reduce the usage of cement in concrete where different proportions of tile powder as cement replacement were used. Since in the manufacture of cement an exuberant amount of carbon dioxide is disposed of in the environment, this research aims to curtail the dependence on cement and its production. The objective of this work is to investigate the properties of fresh mix concrete (workability) and hardened concrete (compressive and splitting tensile strength) in concrete with different proportions of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% of tile powder as a cement substitute. In this study, a total of 90 concrete samples were cast with mix proportions of 1:1.5:3, 0.5 water-cement ratio, cured for 7, 14 and 28 days. For determining the compressive strength, cubical samples, with dimensions of 100mm×100mm×100mm, were cast, while for the determination of the splitting tensile strength, cylindrical samples with dimensions of 200mm diameter and 100mm height, were tested after 7, 14, and 28 days. The highest compressive strength of concrete achieved for tile powder concrete was 7.50% at 10% replacement after 28days of curing. The splitting tensile strength got to 10.2% when concrete was replaced with 10% of tile powder and cured for 28 days. It was also shown that with increasing percentage of the tile powder content, the workability of the fresh concrete increases.

The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of the air entrainment on the fresh rheological properties as well as on the compressive mechanical resistances of the mortars. The hardened concrete contains a certain amount of randomly spread air, coming either from a drive during kneading or from the evaporation of the mixing water. The air quantity is in the order of 20 l / m3, ie 2% of the volume. However, the presence of a large volume of air bubbles causes the mechanical resistances to fall in compression. On the other hand, the use of air entrainment could improve the rheological properties of fresh concrete. Experimental studies have been carried out to study the effect of air entrainment on compressive strength, density and ingredients of fresh concrete mix. During all the study, water cement ratio (w/c) was maintained constant at 0.5. The results have shown substantial decreasing in water and mortar density followed with decreasing in compressive strength of mortar. The results of this study has given more promising to use it as a guide for mortar mix design to choose the most appropriate concrete mix design economically.

Reusing of waste glass in concrete production is among the attractive option of achieving waste reduction and preserving the natural resources from further depletion thereby protecting the environment and achieving sustainability. This present study examines the possible reuse of waste glass crushed into fine and coarse aggregate sizes as partial substitute for natural fine and coarse aggregate in concrete. The variables in this study is both the fine and coarse aggregate while the cement and water-cement ratio were held constant. The crushed glass was varied from 0 – 100% in steps of 25% by weight to replace the both the natural fine and coarse aggregate in the same concrete mix. Concrete mixes were prepared using a mix proportion of 1:2:4 (cement: fine aggregate: coarse aggregate) at water-cement ratio of 0.5 targeting a design strength of 20 MPa. Tests were carried out on total number of 90 concrete cube specimens of size 150 x 150 x150 mm and 90concrete cylinder specimens of dimension 100 mm diameter by 200 mm height after 3, 7, 14, 28, 42 and 90 days of curing. Test results indicated that the compressive and split tensile strength of the hardened concrete decreases with increasing waste glass content compared with the control. However, concrete mix made with 25% waste glass content compared significantly well with the control and can be suitably adopted for production of light weight concrete.

The article presents the results of research assessing the possibility of making LWSCC from the locally produced sintered fly ash aggregate CERTYD. Two methods of preliminary LWA preparation were applied: pre-soaking with water and coating with a film of cement paste. The following properties of fresh LWSCC were evaluated: slump-flow, time T500 and passing ability using L-Box. Partial replacement of natural sand by fine LW sand (0/0.5 mm) improved filling and passing abilities of fresh concrete, reduced slightly the bulk density, but it resulted in compressive strength loss by 12-18%. In terms of both fresh and hardened concrete properties it is more favorable to use only fine LW sand as natural sand replacement. Considering fresh concrete properties paste impregnation of LW aggregate is more efficient than saturation with water.

Aggregates constitute 60 – 80% of total concrete constituents. The characteristics of concrete may be affected by the sources from which the aggregate was obtained. The effects of granite sourced from four selected locations within Ogbomoso, Nigeria; on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete were investigated. The granites were obtained from: Asafa (80 4.681 N and 40 20.781 E), Ola-jesu (80 13.591 N and 40 10.11 E), Igbo-ile (80 4.681 N and 40 19.571 E) and Apasu (80 14.961 N and 40 10.051 E). Sieve analysis, specific gravity, moisture content, Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV) and Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) of the granites were determined. The aggregates were used to produce concrete of two different mix ratio-1:2:4 and 1:3:6. Slump and compaction factor tests were carried out on fresh concrete and compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and water absorption on hardened concrete. The results indicated that granite obtained from Asafa and Ola-jesu exhibited improved characteristics over those sourced from Igbo-ile and Apasu and are more suitable for use in producing high-quality concrete.

Recycling of construction and demolition waste and recycling of industrial by-products into building materials has an enormous potential. Brick waste can be treated by reusing for construction. Recently, the utilization of pozzolanic materials in cement and concrete have increased considerably due to their diverse benefits such as lesser use of cement , saving in production costs, improvement in the durability of concrete and so on. Ground bricks was added to concrete mix as partial replacement of cement at (5, 10, 15) % by weight. It was evaluated as a pozzolanic material in conjunction with high range water reducing admixture superplasticizer (HRWR)-The study confirmed that the use of 10 % of ground brick improved compressive, flexure strength of concrete by about (23.3%) and (5.92%) respectively at 240 days as compared to reference concrete and decreased the depth of water penetration under pressure by about 43.75% at 150 days, also the water absorption decreased by about 2.52%. The uses of 10% of grinding brick in conjunction with high range water reducing admixture reduced corrosion of steel reinforcement by about 18%.
