To improve the cutting performance, the red hardness and wear resistance of M2 high-speed steel, as well as expand the application field, in this work, a coating was fabricated via plasma cladding on M2 high-speed steel using Ni, Cr and Cu alloy elements as precursor materials. The distribution and composition of alloying elements, microhardness and wear resistance of the coating were studied. The results show that the NiCrCu cladding layer contains many types of carbides. The secondary hardening caused by the dispersion of carbides can significantly improve the hardness, red hardness and wear resistance of material. The hardness of cladding layer is above 950 HV, after holding at 600 °C for 4 h, the hardness is above 932 HV. The alloy elements are evenly distributed, but, due to the rapid solidification after the cladding, there are composition fluctuations in the longitudinal direction. The wear resistance of the cladding layer is excellent; the wear rate is reduced from 1.75 to 1.44 × 10−6 mm3 N−1 m−1 or less; and the wear mechanism is a combination of abrasive wear and adhesive wear.

The effect of subzero treatment on tool steels is well known, and is commercially practiced for certain varieties of tool steels. Substantial research is being carried out on the behavior of tool steels after cryogenic treatment (CT). While it has been established that CT improves the wear properties in some steels, the mechanism of this behavioral aspect is not yet fully known. Most work has been focused on AISI M2 high speed steel related to the effect on different properties, but the microstructural change is not yet conclusively identified. Neither the past research has brought forth the exact principles on which CT should be based. Some of these important issues are addressed in this paper.

The article is devoted to the metallographic analysis of the M2 high-speed steel granules. The study is based on the investigation of the microstructure of the M2 high-speed steel granules obtained by melt atomization. It is demonstrated that granules of similar size can harden both by chemically separating and chemically non-separating mechanism. These last ones have supersaturated solid solution structure of the liquid melt composition, a dispersed dendritic-cellular structure and an increased microhardness HV = 10267±201 MPa.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine mechanical and metallurgical properties of AlTiN- and TiN-coates high-speed steel (HSS) materials in detail. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, HSS steel parts have been processed through machining and have been coated with AlTiN and TiN on physical vapour deposition workbench at approximately 6,500°C for 4 hours. Tensile strength, fatigue strength, hardness tests for AlTiN- and TiN-coated HSS samples have been performed; moreover, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis and microstructure analysis have been made by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results have been compared with uncoated HSS components. Findings – It was found that tensile strength of TiAlN- and TiN-coated HSS parts is higher than that of uncoated HSS parts. Highest tensile strength has been obtained from TiN-coated HSS parts. Number of cycles for failure of TiAlN- and TiN-coated HSS parts is higher than that for HSS parts. Particularly TiN-coated HSS parts have the most valuable fatigue results. However, surface roughness of fatigue samples may cause notch effect. For this reason, surface roughness of coated HSS parts is compared with that of uncoated ones. While the average surface roughness (Ra) of the uncoated samples was in the range of 0.40 μm, that of the AlTiN- and TiN-coated samples was in the range of 0.60 and 0.80 μm, respectively. Research limitations/implications – It would be interesting to search different coatings for cutting tools. It could be the good idea for future work to concentrate on wear properties of tool materials. Practical implications – The detailed mechanical and metallurgical results can be used to assess the AlTiN and TiN coating applications in HSS materials. Originality/value – This paper provides information on mechanical and metallurgical behaviour of AlTiN- and TiN-coated HSS materials and offers practical help for researchers and scientists working in the coating area.

Cracks and delamination, resulting from residual stresses, are a barrier in the world of additive manufacturing and selective laser melting (SLM) that prohibits the use of many metals in this field. By preheating the baseplate, thermal gradients are lowered and stresses can be reduced. In this work, some initial tests were performed with M2 high speed steel (HSS). The influence of preheating on density and mechanical and physical properties is investigated. The paper shows many promising results for the production of SLM parts in materials that are very sensitive to crack formation and delamination. When using a preheating of 200 °C, crack-free M2 HSS parts were produced with a relative density of 99.8%.

This paper reports on the compatibility of waste rubber as binder for M2 High Speed Steel injection moulding. The feedstock was prepared at a powder loading of 65 vol.% using 22μm M2 High Speed Steel powder and the binders consisting of 55wt.% paraffin wax, 21wt.% polyethylene, 14wt.% waste rubber and 10wt.% stearic acid. The specimens were then sintered in vacuum and 95%N2/5%H2 atmosphere. The sintering in vacuum atmosphere occurred within a temperature range from1200°C to 1260°C, whilst the 95%N2/5%H2 atmosphere was carried out within a temperature range from 1220°C to 1300°C. The effects of the sintering atmosphere and temperature on the physical properties, mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated.
