This article is a theoretical reflection on the sociological use of theconcepts of family and household as occupants of the dwelling. It advocates theredefinition of the occupant of housing as a home/household rather than as a family, thus overcoming a reductionist conception that emphasizes the importance ofhousing as a socializing space of the family rather than as a vital scenario. Suchreflection allows to incorporate as a subject of study the actor who is aging, whochanges, and who does not manifest residential needs only based on the householdcycle, but on the life course itself. The article also reflects on the limitations ofinextricably associating housing with the family. This argument does not intend to undermine the importance of the family, butto claim the recognition of housing as a greater continent, which conceives thecontinuous dimension of the household in addition to its multiple forms without ajustification being necessary: housing is not important (only) because it sheltersthe socializing-reproducing functions of the family, but because it allows the developmentof the function of inhabiting for all types of households.

Sexual assault has a devastating effect on survivors as well as their family and friends (i.e., secondary survivors). Research shows that survivors’ abilities to cope in the aftermath of sexual trauma are particularly difficult in the “internet” age. This struggle stems from the abilities of perpetrators to use cyberspace to abuse, harass, and threaten survivors vis-à-vis various cybercrimes: cyberstalking, cybersexual abuse, and cyberfraud. Indeed, a survivor in this study referred to the cybervictimizations as the “third-victimization” because it followed the sexual assault (first) and the “revictimization” experienced during the pursuit of justice (second). This article presents the results of semistructured interviews about the third-victimization of 48 female survivors and 89 secondary survivors, the family of the survivor. These results show that all primary and most secondary survivors (91%) experienced at least one third-victimization, with a majority experiencing multiple forms.

ABSTRACT We describe our studies of the genetics of allelic variation for NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). Five populations of rainbow trout were studied to determine the phenotypic distribution of IDH; 453 progeny from a number of controlled matings were examined to determine the nature of inheritance of these alleles. The variation was found to be the result of four alleles producing protein subunits of differing electrophoretic mobilities. Progeny from crosses clearly demonstrated the presence of two disomic loci controlling the variation, rather than one tetrasomic locus as had been previously reported. These findings support our contention that the hypothesis of a tetraploid event in salmonid evolution should not be uncritically accepted.

Canada's family class immigration policy has been studied as a gendered policy that has differential and harmful effects on women sponsored by their male spouses for immigration to Canada (Côté et al., 2001; National Association for Women and the Law, 1999; Thobani, 2000). As women are commonly seen as migrating for marriage and men for work (Sweetman, 1998), there has been little research done on the experiences of women who sponsor male spouses for immigration to Canada. This study explores the experiences of sponsoring women, mainly how their economic and family situations are affected by immigration policy and process. Using multiple forms of data, particularly judicial cases and interviews with sponsoring women, the study extracts themes related to immigration policy, immigration process, neo-liberalism, and the Sponsorship Agreement. It concludes that immigration policy and process create barriers to the family reunification of sponsoring women and their partners, increase the economic marginalization of women, and re-victimize women who have been abused by sponsored partners by holding them responsible for the Sponsorship Agreement.

One quantitative and nine qualitative genetic markers were investigated in some 200 individuals of the family Canidae, including 34 breeds and species. A high degree of homogeneity was observed and only one marker, transferrin, displayed marked variation. The consistent differences were: wolf (one sample), transferrin; jackal (one sample), transferrin and glucosephosphate isomerase; foxes, albumin, transferrin and glucosephsophate isomerase. Two abnormal transferrins were observed in two siblings among six German short-haired pointers. All other markers were homogeneous, usually single protein species or multiple forms dispersed randomly through the group. The results suggest that domestic dogs and dingoes share a common pool of genes and that all canids but the foxes possess many genes in common. There are indications that the jackal and wolf may differ from other canids in some marker systems.

Isoelectric focusing of yeast isocitrate dehydrogenase apparently reveals a number of ‘isoenzymes’. These have isoelectric points near pH5.5 in crude material, but during purification the mean isoelectric point progressively rises to pH7.0 and the band pattern changes. The shift in isoelectric point during purification is apparently genuine, since it is also manifested in the electrophoretic and chromatographic properties of the enzyme. The multiple forms, however, are an artifact, generated by exposure of the enzyme to Ampholine, since their activities vary with the protein/Ampholine ratio and they cannot be observed in any system from which Ampholine is excluded. There are no detectable isoenzymes of yeast isocitrate dehydrogenase.

The Constitution of Bangladesh ensures the equal rights and status of women in public life. But nondiscrimination over women in the private sphere is not guaranteed. Consequently, there are significant disparities between men and women in all realms of life. Lack of equal access to economic opportunities, education, health services and their lesser role in decision making perpetuate women’s subordination to men and susceptibility to violence. The notion of the society about girl children within the family itself builds up a mindset that girls ought to be less important than the male children. The multiple forms of discrimination against girls begin at home and continue to the end of their lives. This imbalanced foundation of knowledge, fully biased in favour of the males of the family, spreads through the society in general, resulting in tremendous forms of violence and injustice to women as a whole. The article highlights the key reasons of oppression over women such as physical, sexual and psychological abuse that cuts across lines of income, class and culture and its ultimate consequences. This article evaluates the loopholes in the existing criminal justice system of Bangladesh concerning violence against women with mentioning necessary possible way outs.

Even though majority of textbooks, journals choose to adopt a legal definition of the family business wherein the family business is defined as an enterprise where the members of a single family are the majority shareholders, but in this new millennium where multiple forms and derivatives of the organizational forms, a new definition of family business needs to be adopted.
