The article deals with the issues of language competence and speech activity of the population of the republic in different language situations. It was found that, despite the high level of recognition of the native language and language competence, individuals use Russian more when communicating. Such language behavior manifests itself not only in public places, in educational institutions or when communicating with close friends, but even in the family and household sphere. One of the factors of such speech activity of individuals is the ethno-linguistic environment, which contributes to the formation of linguistic competence and further generates linguistic behavior of individuals.

The results of a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the publications of the “Magazine for Housewives” and “Women’s Magazine” of the NEP period are presented in the article. The novelty of the research is seen in the analysis of the structural, thematic, functional features of women’s magazines of the NEP era. Special attention is paid to the author’s body, including the previously unexplored works of A. S. Voznesensky (real name — Brodsky), who signed his materials with the pseudonym “Ilya Rentz”. The subject of this research is the family and household songs as one of the genre varieties of non-ritual lyrics in the Dargin folklore. They are thematically related with family life, household, customs and traditions of the Dargins. Their content reflects the typical aspects of patriarchal family of the prerevolutionary Dagestan, when due to the rigid local customary laws, women were deprived of the right to decide their fate; therefore, multiple songs resemble sadness, sorrow, suffering, and distress of the heroes. This article explores the thematic diversity of family and household songs in the Dargin folklore, their poetics and nature of visual-expressive means; as well as reveals their ideological-aesthetic, artistic, stylistic and compositional functions in poetry. The novelty of this research lies in introduction of Dargin family and household songs into the scientific discourse, as well as description of the uniqueness and poetic means and techniques used therein. Analysis of the songs demonstrated that the poetic system of song lyrics as a whole, and family-household in particular, are characterized by the use of such literary techniques as metaphor, epithet, symbols, contrasts, iteration, etc., which play a significant role in the poetic text, reflecting the emotional state and the depth of feelings of the lyrical heroes.

Aims: Adverse childhood experiences are known to relate positively to various health risks and adverse health behaviour in adult life, although the precise mechanisms are still debated. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a single-item measure of the quality of childhood relationships with family and household members might show a similar association. Methods: We measured the overall quality of relationships with family and household members during the first 18 years of life. A one-dimensional question scored 0–10 ( N=4983) was included in the ongoing SIBS Iceland Patient Association’s national ‘Life and Health’ public health prevention project among adults. Relationship quality was then assessed against measures of health and health behaviour using 21 validated scales. Results: A lower childhood relationships score was associated with a higher risk of all 21 suboptimal health and health behaviour outcomes in adulthood, with adjusted effect sizes measured by standardised betas (magnitude 0.111–0.284), variance explained (1.3–8.5%) and per-point adjusted odds ratios (1.10–1.30). The strongest associations were found with measures of social and mental health, followed by physical health, alcohol and tobacco use, sleeping problems, financial sustenance, physical pain and aerobic fitness. Conclusions: Odds were found to match well with pooled odds ratios presented in a systematic review of 37 adverse childhood experiences studies. This may indicate that a one-dimensional relationships question is a useful substitute in surveys in which a traditional multi-question adverse childhood experiences scale cannot be accommodated. Further investigations are recommended to investigate the applicability of a single adverse childhood experiences question.
