ABSTRACT: The popularity of cats as a companion animal has been growing. Additionally, there is also an increase in the number of complaints regarding behavioral problems associated with the species. Behavioral problems interfere with the animal welfare and quality of people’s lives that are living with them, and are one of the main reasons for abandonment and euthanasia in some countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of behavioral problems among cats with the help of veterinary practitioners in the city of Porto Alegre/Brazil. This evaluation was performed through a questionnaire in veterinary clinics and hospitals of small animals, which was answered by veterinarians responsible for clinical care. The study showed that most veterinarians (92.0%) have been sought to assist with behavioral problems and that dogs were the most consulted species (72.0%). Regarding cats, scratching was the most common owners’ complaints (40.0%), followed by aggressiveness (39.0%), and inappropriate elimination of urine (38.0%). Aggression (73.8%) and scratching (56.9%) were the most frequent reasons that may lead to the abandonment or euthanasia of cats. Results of this research highlighted the importance of having a better understanding about the normal behavior of cats, and the fundamental role of the veterinarian in preventing behavioral problems and abandonment of these animals.

Network intrusion detection system (NIDS) is a software system which plays an important role to protect network system and can be used to monitor network activities to detect different kinds of attacks from normal behavior in network traffics. A false alarm is one of the most identified problems in relation to the intrusion detection system which can be a limiting factor for the performance and accuracy of the intrusion detection system. The proposed system involves mining techniques at two sequential levels, which are: at the first level Naïve Bayes algorithm is used to detect abnormal activity from normal behavior. The second level is the multinomial logistic regression algorithm of which is used to classify abnormal activity into main four attack types in addition to a normal class. To evaluate the proposed system, the KDDCUP99 dataset of the intrusion detection system was used and K-fold cross-validation was performed. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed system is improved with less false alarm rate.

Adolescence is the time between the beginning of sexual maturation and adulthood, typically bounded by the ages of 13 to 19 years. One construct that holds a central place in many theories of development and psychopathology is impulsivity. Impulsivity has been considered to play an important role in normal behavior as well as linked to several problematic behaviors that are present or arise during adolescence. Impulsivity, considered to be a multidimensional construct, has been defined and measured in a variety of ways. This chapter will discuss the definitions of impulsivity, measurement (including self-report and behavioral tasks), developmental course, behaviors and disorders in which it is implicated, and future directions.


Impulsivity, to varying degrees, is what underlies human behavior and decision-making processes. As such, a thorough examination of impulsivity allows us to better understand modes of normal behavior and action as well as a range of related psychopathological disorders, including kleptomania, pyromania, trichotillomania, intermittent explosive disorder, and pathological gambling—disorders grouped under the term "impulse control disorders" (ISDs). Recent efforts in the areas of cognitive psychology, neurobiology, and genetics have provided a greater understanding of these behaviors and given way to improved treatment options. The Oxford Handbook of Impulse Control Disorders provides a clear understanding of the developmental, biological, and phenomenological features of a range of ICDs, as well as detailed approaches to their assessment and treatment. Bringing together founding ICD researchers and leading experts from psychology and psychiatry, this volume reviews the biological underpinnings of impulsivity and the conceptual challenges facing clinicians as they treat individuals with ICDs.

AbstractThe RIβ subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), encoded by Prkar1b, is a neuronal isoform of the type I regulatory subunit of PKA. Mice lacking the RIβ subunit exhibit normal long-term potentiation (LTP) in the Schaffer collateral pathway of the hippocampus and normal behavior in the open-field and fear conditioning tests. Here, we combined genetic, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches to demonstrate that the RIβ subunit was involved in body tremor, LTP in the Schaffer collateral pathway, and fear conditioning memory in rats. Genetic analysis of WTC-furue, a mutant strain with spontaneous tremors, revealed a deletion in the Prkar1b gene of the WTC-furue genome. Prkar1b-deficient rats created by the CRISPR/Cas9 system exhibited body tremor. Hippocampal slices from mutant rats showed deficient LTP in the Schaffer collateral–CA1 synapse. Mutant rats also exhibited decreased freezing time following contextual and cued fear conditioning, as well as increased exploratory behavior in the open field. These findings indicate the roles of the RIβ subunit in tremor pathogenesis and contextual and cued fear memory, and suggest that the hippocampal and amygdala roles of this subunit differ between mice and rats and that rats are therefore beneficial for exploring RIβ function.

AbstractAsymmetric superlattices (SLs) with ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) and ferroelectric Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 (BST) as constitutive layers were fabricated on conducting LaNiO3 (LNO) coated (001) oriented MgO substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The crystallinity, ferroelectric and magnetic properties of the SLs were studied over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. The structure exhibited ferromagnetic behavior at 300K, and ferroelectric behavior over a range of temperatures between 100K and 300K. The dielectric response as a function of frequency obeys normal behavior below 300 K, whereas it follows Maxwell–Wagner model at elevated temperatures. The effect of ferromagnetic LSMO layers on ferroelectric properties of the SL indicated strong influence of the interfaces. The asymmetric behavior of ferroelectric loop and the capacitance-voltage relationship suggest development of a built field in the SLs due to high strain across the interfaces.
