The objective of this paper is to study the characteristic of a circular tube with a built-in arc belt on fluid flow and heat transfer in uniform wall temperature flows. Numerical simulations for hydrodynamically laminar flow was direct ran at Re between 600 and 1800. Preliminary results on velocity and temperature statistics for uniform wall temperature show that, arc belt can swirl the pipe fluid, so that the fluid at the center of the tube and the fluid of the boundary layer of the wall can mix fully, and plays the role of enhanced heat transfer, but also significantly increases the resistance of the fluid and makes the resistance coefficient of the enhanced tube greater than smooth tube. The combination property PEC is all above 1.5.

In this paper, we propose a new fluid: drag-reducing-fluid-based nanofluids (DRFBN), i.e., nanoparticles are added into polymer aqueous solution. In order to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of this new fluid, the Reynolds stress turbulence model and equivalent viscosity model are used in the simulations. Wall shear stress and Nusselt number (Nu) are chosen to represent the effects of drag reduction and heat enhancement respectively. The numerical studies mainly focus on the effects of different parameters on wall shear stress and Nu. The results show that comparison with water flow, DRFBN flow still has remarkable drag-reducing effect; comparison with polymer aqueous solution flow, DRFBN flow has some improvement on heat transfer. Therefore, DRFBN has duel effects: drag reduction and heat transfer enhancement. Besides, it is found that the parameters of nanoparticle volume fraction, Reynolds number and drag-reducing parameter have remarkable effects on wall shear stress and Nu of DRFBN flow.

Previous studies by flow visualization have indicated that the flow through a duct of triangular cross section is in its characteristics quite different from flow through a duct with circular cross section. They revealed among others that purely laminar flow exists in the corners of the duct even though the bulk of the fluid moves in turbulent motion. Heat-transfer measurements in such a duct appear to indicate that the turbulent transport in the direction of the height of the duct is considerably smaller than expected from circular tube measurements. The present paper reports the measurements of turbulent correlations for turbulent flow through such a duct. These measurements have been made with hot wires of very small dimensions. They again reveal the existence of a laminar corner region. In the bulk of the fluid, the differences of the correlations to those in a round tube turned out to be smaller than originally suspected.

The presence of current flow in an electric and magnetic field results in electromagnetic force and joule heating. It is desirable to understand the roles of electromagnetic force and joule heating on gas microflow and heat transfer. In this study, a mathematical model is developed of the pressure-driven gas flow through a long isothermally heated horizontal planar microchannel in the presence of an external electric and magnetic field. The solutions for flow and thermal field and characteristics are derived analytically and presented in terms of dimensionless parameters. It is found that an electromagnetic driving force can be produced by a combined non-zero electric field and a negative magnetic field and results in an additional velocity slip and an additional flow drag. Also, a joule heating can be enhanced by an applied positive magnetic field and therefore results in an additional temperature jump and an additional heat transfer.

A numerical investigation was carried out to study the flow and heat transfer behavior of a vertical circular tube, which is situated between two annular fins in cross-flow. The flow structure of the limiting streamlines on the surface of the circular tube and the annular fins was analysed. A finite volume method was employed to solve the Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The numerical results pertaining to heat transfer and flow characteristics were compared with the available experimental results. The following salient features were observed in this configuration. A horseshoe vortex system was formed at the junction of the stagnation line of the circular tube and the annular fin. The separation took place at the rear of the tube. The influence of the horseshoe vortices on local heat transfer was substantial. The ratio of the axial gap between two annular fins (L) to the radial protrusion length of the annular fin (LR) was identified as an important parameter. The flow and heat transfer results were presented for different L/LR ratios for a Reynolds number of 1000.

The method of Design of Simulation (DOS) was used to guide and enhance a numerical simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer through offset-fin arrays which from the interior geometry of a cold plate. The basic problem involved 12 independent parameters. This prohibitive parametric burden was lessened by the creative use of nondimensionalization that was brought to fruition by a special transformation of the boundary conditions. Subsequent to the reduction of the number of parameters, the DOS method was employed to limit the number of simulation runs while maintaining an accurate representation of the parameter space. The DOS method also provided excellent correlations of both the dimensionless heat transfer and pressure drop results. The results were evaluated with respect to the Colburn Analogy for heat and momentum transfer. It was found that the offseting of the fins created a larger increase in the friction factor than that which was realized for the dimensionless heat transfer coefficient.
