Prevalence of obesity and hypertension in children and determination of associated factors by CHAID analysis

Obesity is becoming an epidemic globally as it has been closely linked with a wide variety of chronic diseases. The identification of associated factors for obesity occurrences is still the main interest of many researchers. However, there has been extensive disagreement among researchers over possible factors associated with obesity which commonly involve the demographic factors, socioeconomic status (SES) and environmental factors. Biomarkers are also considered as important possible factors linked with the prevalence of obesity but investigations looking into their associations are still lacking. Therefore, it is important to examine factors that are associated with obesity using biomarkers and common factors to get detailed perspectives on obesity prevalence. The objectives of this study are to determine the prevalence of obesity and to examine the association between the common factors and biomarkers with obesity among community in Selangor, Malaysia. The results showed that the prevalence of obesity among participants was 49% (N=498) and Ordinal regression model with Cauchit built-in link function was the best fitted model to predict obesity. Meanwhile, three types of common factors (i.e. older age, being female and Malay ethnic) and one type of biomarker (i.e. high glucose level) were found to be significantly associated with obesity.

Abstract Childhood hypertension is becoming more common with the increasing numbers of child obesity, which has encouraged new studies to identify a good anthropometric marker for high blood pressure levels. The objective this study was to identify the best anthropometric predictor of risk of hypertension in children between 8-10 years of age. The Children were evaluated for socioeconomic status and their blood pressure (BP), weight, height, waist circumference (WC) and percentage of body fat (PBF) were measured. The study included 445 children, of which 50.1% were females. The prevalence of obesity defined by body mass index (BMI) was 14.6%. Increased BP was found in 3.4% and 2.2% of the children, considering the pre-hypertension and hypertension classifications respectively. The arithmetic mean of BP value correlated significantly with BMI, WC and PBF. After height control, the correlations that were maintained significant were between WC and systolic blood pressure (SBP) and between WC and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The variable with the highest predictive power of the occurrence of hypertension was WC. The results indicate that, in this population of children between 8 and 10 years old, WC is a measurement of higher value in predicting increased BP.

Screening for anemia is recommended among infants aged 9 to 12 months. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of anemia among 9-month-old infants at Well Child Clinic, and associated factors with anemia. Well Child record of all visits during January to December 2018 were reviewed. Hemoglobin (Hb) was determined by complete blood count (CBC) or point-of-care Hb (POC-Hb). Anemia was found in 99 from 145 infants (68.3%). The prevalence of anemia was 33.3% and 72.8% when tested by CBC and POC-Hb, respectively. Breastfed Infants had significantly lower mean Hb than formula-fed infants. The odd ratio [95% confident interval] of having anemia among infants who were fed with infant formula were 0.37 [0.14-0.94]; P = .038 when compared to breastfed infants. There was a high proportion of anemia among 9-month-old infants in Rama-WCC and breastfeeding was associated with anemia in infants. The use of POC-Hb may overestimate the prevalence of anemia.

This study was conducted for land classification and analysis of image for defining the land suitability for improving rice crop productivity. Several criteria were considered for the determination of land suitability for rice crop. IRS P6 LISS III image and digitized toposheet of Madhubani district were used for the study. Taking all the variables into accounts, a comprehensive block-wise land suitability map for rice crop of the district has been developed using multicriteria approach and GIS. It was found that 22% of the total rice growing area i.e. 72418 ha are highly suitable, 63% (224512 ha) are moderately suitable, 15% (50372 ha) are marginally suitable and around 1% (3356 ha) is unsuitable for rice crop in Madhubani district. However, it is presumed that the suitability of the rice growing areas may increase or decrease depending on the changes in soil parameters, rainfall, water availability, and other associated factors .
