Purpose The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate the relationship between a set of functional and social–psychological barriers and bank customers’ intention to fully adopt digital payment methods (DPMs). Design/methodology/approach The data were collected via an online questionnaire sent to two samples of Swedish bank customers, namely, adopters-accepters (i.e. young bank customers) and adopters-resisters (i.e. a group opposing a cashless society). Hypotheses were tested by applying an ordinal regression model. Findings Regarding the adopters-accepters, privacy and access barriers can be obstacles to the full adoption of DPMs. The adopters-resisters perceived all five studied barriers as significant, though only the impersonalisation barrier seemed to matter when the barriers were related to their intention to fully adopt DPMs. Moreover, the results suggest that barriers have a stronger negative effect on the intention to fully adopt among those with extensive experience of DPMs. Practical implications Based on the barriers affecting the intention of particular groups of bank customers to adopt DPMs, banks could implement customised measures to promote the ongoing development of digital financial services. Originality/value In this under-researched area, this study provides empirical knowledge of the influence of various barriers on the intention of bank customers characterised as adopters-accepters and adopters-resisters to fully adopt DPMs.

Postoperative complications in head and neck surgery are well-known, but a predictive model to guide clinicians in free flap reconstructions has not been established. This retrospective single-center observational study assessed 131 patients who underwent ablative surgery and received free flap reconstruction. Primary endpoint was the occurrence of systemic complications (PSC). Secondary endpoint was the generation of a nomogram of complications according to the CDC classification. In the ordinal regression model, postoperative administration of furosemide [1.36 (0.63–2.11), p < 0.0001], blood loss [0.001 (0.0004–0.0020), p = 0.004], postoperative nadir hemoglobin [−0.03 (−0.07–0.01), p = 0.108], smoking [0.72 (0.02–1.44), p = 0.043], and type of flap reconstruction [1.01 (0.21–1.84), p = 0.014] as predictors. A nomogram with acceptable discrimination was proposed (Somer's delta: 0.52). Application of this nomogram in clinical practice could help identify potentially modifiable risk factors and thus reduce the incidence of postoperative complications in patients undergoing microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck.

School readiness is essential for children because children ready to enter elementary school will benefit and progress further than those not prepared to enter elementary school. Kustimah (2008) stated that the factors that influence children's readiness to enter elementary school include age and level of intelligence. Age factors can affect thinking and work. A person's mindset and grasping power are also influenced by age. The older a person gets, the more his grasping ability and attitude will develop and, of course, affect the knowledge he gains. This study is a quantitative study that aims to determine the effect between age and intelligence of early childhood on their readiness to enter elementary school by using psychological test tools Nijmeegse Schoolbekwaamheids Test (NST) and Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM). Studies conducted this research at Muhammadiyah Elementary School, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province. From 85 respondents, using the ordinal regression model, the results were 0.998, 0.998, 0.278, and 0.887; this shows that age and intelligence have no significant effect on children's readiness to enter school.

The study sought to determine the effects of leadership trait towards promoting utilization of ICT farming systems for maize production in Zimbabwe. The study adopted qualitative approach and utilized 219 participants. The research also adopted an ordinal regression model to analyze the data. The study contributed the knowledge that leadership who are dominant, who are not flexible to change and conserved hinder the adoption of ICT farming systems for maize production just like leaders under small scale maize farmer union. In order to facilitate early the adoption which has taken place under the large scale maize farmer organization, farmer leadership, must possess radical, flexibility, and participatory traits to facilitate change and not inhibit change. In order to promote the early adoption of ICT farming systems in the maize value chain the farmer union leadership must be flexible and less dominance to change.

Orange wastage through postharvest losses has contributed to food scarcity, economic loss and massive importation of food items in Nigeria. The research was mainly carried out to investigate the determinants of orange postharvest losses among orange farmers in Konshisha Local Government of Benue State, North Central geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Primary data was collected from the orange farmers using structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. Descriptive statistics and Ordinal Regression model were used to analyse the data collected. The quantity lost was perceived at six (6) categories. The results revealed that most (63.7%) of the farmers were above 34 years of age. Also the majority (95.1%) were male, while 55.3% of the respondents’ farm size was relatively large with 200 and above stands of orange. The farmers’ literacy level was 73.6%. Those that belonged to farmers groups were 39.5. Further results established the use of probit link function in the ordinal regression modelling and that the significant factors affecting orange postharvest losses in the area are farmer’s lack of education and farmers not belonging to any association or group. The only significant covariate with the postharvest loss quantity of orange is farm size. The test of parallel lines established that, the location parameters (slope coefficients) are the same across response categories.

Introduction The effects, severity, and prognosis of COVID-19 infections do not follow a linear pattern in different locations, but change according to the epidemiological data and social issues in each region. Aims The purpose of the current study is to provide the clinical and epidemiological standard of the population affected by COVID-19 in the city of Juiz de Fora, MG to better understand the disease and its risk factors, in order to enable more appropriate conduct for patients. Methods A retrospective observational study was carried out from March to August of 2020, with 266 participants admitted to the emergency department of the Instituto de Clínicas e Cirurgia de Juiz de Fora—Hospital Monte Sinai. Data were tabulated, analyzed, and classified according to the outcome using an ordinal regression model. Results Among the 266 admitted patients, the most common findings were ground-glass opacifications on chest CT (78.8%), cough (75.6%), fever (58.4%), and rhinorrhea (34.5%). There were greater severity and greater need for hospitalization and admission to the ICU in patients who were male, tachypneic at the time of admission, with older age, and with underlying diseases. Conclusion Collected data allowed for a better understanding of the disease, its severity criteria, and its pattern of affection in Juiz de Fora, MG. More studies based on the analysis of the behavior of COVID-19 in different regions must be carried out, to improve treatment and support to local populations.

This study examined the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and leisure involvement in various meaningful activities under the political economy of aging and life course. The stepwise multiple and ordinal regression model revealed that the individual factors of older adults were significantly associated with leisure involvement: age (younger adults), gender (men), education level (higher education), perceived economic satisfaction (higher satisfaction with their financial condition), and perceived health (higher satisfaction with their health) variables were significantly related to more frequent participation in domestic leisure travel. Additionally, gender and education level were associated with leisure-time exercise; the four variables (gender, education level, economic activity, and perceived financial satisfaction) were related to leisure-time social activities. Contrary to our expectation, older adults who are older and with lower education were more likely to participate in volunteering activities. The results suggested that older adults’ sociodemographic characteristics play an essential role in leisure behavior. The extent to which these characteristics affect leisure participation varies with different types of activities and cultural contexts.

Abstract Study Objectives The presence of flow limitation during sleep is associated with adverse health consequences independent of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity (apnea-hypopnea index, AHI), but remains extremely challenging to quantify. Here we present a unique library and an accompanying automated method that we apply to investigate flow limitation during sleep. Methods A library of 117,871 breaths (N=40 participants) were visually classified (certain flow limitation, possible flow limitation, normal) using airflow shape and physiological signals (ventilatory drive per intra-esophageal diaphragm EMG). An ordinal regression model was developed to quantify flow limitation certainty using flow-shape features (e.g. flattening, scooping); breath-by-breath agreement (Cohen’s ƙ) and overnight flow limitation frequency (R 2, %breaths in certain or possible categories during sleep) were compared against visual scoring. Subsequent application examined flow limitation frequency during arousals and stable breathing, and associations with ventilatory drive. Results The model (23 features) assessed flow limitation with good agreement (breath-by-breath ƙ=0.572, p<0.001) and minimal error (overnight flow limitation frequency R 2=0.86, error=7.2%). Flow limitation frequency was largely independent of AHI (R 2=0.16) and varied widely within individuals with OSA (74[32-95]%breaths, mean[range], AHI>15/hr, N=22). Flow limitation was unexpectedly frequent but variable during arousals (40[5-85]%breaths) and stable breathing (58[12-91]%breaths), and was associated with elevated ventilatory drive (R 2=0.26-0.29; R 2<0.01 AHI v. drive). Conclusions Our method enables quantification of flow limitation frequency, a key aspect of obstructive sleep-disordered breathing that is independent of the AHI and often unavailable. Flow limitation frequency varies widely between individuals, is prevalent during arousals and stable breathing, and reveals elevated ventilatory drive.

Background and Purpose: Understanding factors which affect the level of family well-being is important as it contributes to effective decision making among the policymakers to improve the family lives as well as to strengthen the family institution. Accordingly, this line of research is gaining attention. This study develops an ordinal regression model which identifies demographic, economic and social factors that are significant in explaining the status of family well-being.    Methodology: Data involving 2,808 respondents from a nationwide survey conducted by the National Population and Family Development Board of Malaysia in 2011 were used in this study. Ordinal regression model was implemented to describe the three levels of family well-being.   Findings: The national survey reported that high level of family well-being was experienced by 76.3 per cent of the respondents, followed by moderate (18.4%) and low (5.3%). The fitted ordinal regression model found that ethnic background, family relationship, community relationship, health and safety levels, economic situation of the family, religious practice, housing, and environment are significantly related to family well-being. Meanwhile, it was found that the level of income is not a significant factor in determining the level of family well-being.     Contributions: There are a limited number of studies on the application of ordinal regression for modelling the level of family well-being, particularly with covariates involving the demographic and social characteristics of the respondents. This study fills in the gap in the literature where the ordinal regression model provides useful information for policymakers to enhance the status of family well-being in Malaysia via various policy initiatives.   Keywords: Family well-being, Ordinal Regression Model, ordinal data, Proportional Odds Model.   Cite as: Muhammad Sapri, N.
