The aim of the study was to clarify the character of the initiatory activity of pathogenic and nonpathogenic microorganisms in regard to salt solutions. We selected colonies of two microorganisms: Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (St. aureus) [106 , 108 , 1010, 1012, 1014, 1016, 1018 and 1020 CFU/ml of solution]. A 10% solution of sodium chloride was used as the initiated substance, which made it possible to perform a tezigraphic test. On the basis of model experiments with colonies of some pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms, a new phenomenon was confirmed — microbial initiation of crystal formation (the phenomenon of microorganismassociated crystallogenesis). This phenomenon is universal for microagents, but it also has specific features imposed by the species of the microorganism and its current functional state.

Abstract: This study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Chromodoris dianae on E.coli and S. aureus. This was an experimental study. Samples of Chromodoris dianae was taken from Bunaken waters by diving. Extract of Chromodoris dianae was obtained by using maceration technique with 96% etanol. Antibacterial activity of this extract was tested by using the Kirby-Bauer method. The results showed that the mean diameter of the inhibition zone of E. coli was 22.3±1.5 mm and of S. aureus was 23.0±1.0 mm; both were were less than of ciprofloxacin as the positive control repeated for three times. Conclusionn: Chromodoris dianae has antibacterial effects on the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.Keywords: Chromodoris dianae, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat adanya efek antibakteri dari Chromodoris dianae terhadap bakteri E.coli dan S. aureus. Jenis penelitian ialah eksperimental. Sampel Chromodoris dianae diambil dari perairan Bunaken dengan cara menyelam. Ekstrak Chromodoris dianae dibuat dengan cara maserasi menggunakan etanol 96%. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Kirby-Bauer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya zona hambat terhadap E. coli dan S. aureus dengan rerata diameter 22,3±1,5 mm dan 23,0±1,0 mm, yang lebih kecil daripada rerata diameter kontrol positif siprofloksasin pada tiga kali pengulangan. Simpulan: Chromodoris dianae memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli.Kata kunci: Chromodoris dianae, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli

Background: The WHO estimates that approximately 600 million people fall ill after consumption of contaminated food and over 420 000 die every year, resulting in loss of 33 million healthy life years. Hand hygiene is considered by the WHO to be the most effective preventive measure for infectious diseases including food borne diseases.Methods: A laboratory-based study involving convenient sampling of common brands alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS) from retail community pharmacies and local supermarkets was conducted in Ilala District, Dar es salaam, Tanzania. The study was conducted, between December 2018 to January 2019. A modified protocol of The European Norm (EN) 1500 was used for in vivo testing of sampled ABHs. Efficacy was evaluated using standard strain of Escherichia coli. A total of 26 healthy volunteers were used for hand sanitization. The percentage of bioburden/microbial reduction was assessed at baseline and after treatment, and the log reduction factor calculated.Results: A total of 10 gel ABHS were purchased and assayed for antibacterial efficacy. Majority (70%) of ABHS were imported products and contained ethanol as the sole active ingredient. About 60% of them did not correctly indicate the label disclosure information on concentration of active ingredients. Only one product was efficacious against E. coli with log reduction of 3.75; while majority (70%) of the samples had poor bacterial efficacy with log reduction ranging from 0.140 -0.664.Conclusions: Most of ABHS gel products available in the Dar es Salaam market were not efficacious as per FDA and EN 1500 guidelines. Post market surveillance is recommended of the circulating ABH to safe guard consumers. Keywords: Hand sanitizers, efficacy, E. coli, EN 1500.

The research was undertaken to determine the bacteriostatic effects of the concentrate of Japanese apricot juice (bainiku-ekisu), which is a popular health food in Taiwan and Japan, on Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. The results show that E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli could be killed or inhibited by bainiku-ekisu at concentrations between 1.0 and 10.0 mg/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 1 mg/mL for all strains, and the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) were 5, 2.5, and 2.5 mg/mL for E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli, respectively. Using the growth rate to calculate the MICs and MBCs, the MICs were 1.55, 1.43, and 0.97 mg/mL, and the MBCs were 2.59, 2.63, and 2.25 mg/mL for E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli, respectively. According to the D values, E. faecalis and S. aureus exhibited lower resistance than E. coli at lower bainiku-ekisu concentrations (1.0 and 2.5 mg/mL), and the resistance of these two pathogens was better than that of E. coli at higher bainiku-ekisu concentrations (5.0 and 10.0 mg/mL). The Z values of the E. faecalis, S. aureus, and E. coli strains were 3.47, 4.93, and 11.62 mg/mL, respectively.
