In this study, we numerically investigate the impact perforation of sandwich panels made of 0.8 mm 2024-T3 aluminum alloy skin sheets and graded polymeric hollow sphere cores with four different gradient profiles. A suitable numerical model was conducted using the LS-DYNA code, calibrated with an inverse perforation test, instrumented with a Hopkinson bar, and validated using experimental data from the literature. Moreover, the effects of quasi-static loading, landing rates, and boundary conditions on the perforation resistance of the studied graded core sandwich panels were discussed. The simulation results showed that the piercing force–displacement response of the graded core sandwich panels is affected by the core density gradient profiles. Besides, the energy absorption capability can be effectively enhanced by modifying the arrangement of the core layers with unclumping boundary conditions in the graded core sandwich panel, which is rather too hard to achieve with clumping boundary conditions.

This paper presents a combined experimental and numerical study of free vibration of industry-driven woven fiber glass/epoxy (G/E) composite plates with delamination. Using the first-order shear deformation theory, an eight-noded two-dimensional quadratic isoparametric element was developed, which has five degrees of freedom per node. In the experimental study, the influence of various parameters such as the delamination size, boundary conditions, fiber orientations, number of layers, and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies of delaminated composite plates are investigated. Comparison of the numerical results with experimental ones shows good agreement. Fundamental natural frequencies are found to decrease with the increase in the delamination size and fiber orientation and increases with the increase in the number of layers and aspect ratio of delaminated composite plates. The natural frequency of the delaminated composite plate varies significantly for different boundary conditions.

Flow patterns and heat transfer inside mini twisted oval tubes (TOTs) heated by constant-temperature walls are numerically investigated. Different configurations of tubes are simulated using water as the working fluid with temperature-dependent thermo-physical properties at Reynolds numbers ranging between 500 and 1100. After validating the numerical method with the published correlations and available experimental results, the performance of TOTs is compared to a smooth circular tube. The overall performance of TOTs is evaluated by investigating the thermal-hydraulic performance and the results are analyzed in terms of the field synergy principle and entropy generation. Enhanced heat transfer performance for TOTs is observed at the expense of a higher pressure drop. Additionally, the secondary flow generated by the tube-wall twist is concluded to play a critical role in the augmentation of convective heat transfer, and consequently, better heat transfer performance. It is also observed that the improvement of synergy between velocity and temperature gradient and lower irreversibility cause heat transfer enhancement for TOTs.

AbstractMany different sandwich panels are used for aeronautical applications. Open and closed cell structured foam, balsa wood or honeycomb are often used as core materials. When the core material contains closed cells, water accumulation into the cell has to be taken into account. This phenomenon occurs when in service conditions lead to operate in humidity atmosphere. Then, water vapor from air naturally condenses on cold surfaces when the sandwich panel temperature decreases. This water accumulation might increase significantly the weight of the core material. Core with a ventilated structure helps to prevent this phenomenon. Periodic cellular metal (PCM) has been motivated by potential multifunctional applications that exploit their open architecture as well as their apparent superior strength and stiffness: pyramidal, lattice, Kagome truss or woven. One of the drawbacks of these materials is the expensive cost of the manufacturing. Recently, a novel type of sandwich has been developed with bonded metallic fibers as core material. This material presents attractive combination of properties like high specific stiffness, good damping capacity and energy absorption. Metal fibers bonded with a polymeric adhesive or fabricated in a mat-like form consolidated by solid state sintering. Entangled cross-linked carbon fibers have been also studied for using as core material by Laurent Mezeix. In the present study, ventilated core materials are elaborated from networks fibers. The simplicity of elaboration is one of the main advantages of this material. Multifunctional properties are given by mixing different sorts of fibers, by example adding fibers with good electrical conduction to give electrical conductivity properties. In this study network fibers as core material are elaborated using carbon fibers, glass fibers and stainless steel fibers. In aeronautical skins of sandwich panels used are often carbon/epoxy prepreg, so epoxy resin was used to cross-link fibers. The core thickness was chosen at 30 mm and fibers length was chosen at 40 mm. Entanglement, separation of filaments and cross-linking are obtained in a specific blower room. Fibers are introduced in the blower room, compressed air is applied and in same time epoxy resin is sprayed. Indeed one of the sandwich core material properties required is low density, so yarns size need to be decreased by separating filaments. Network fibers are introduced in a specific mould and then are compressed. The density obtained before epoxy spaying is 150 kg/m3. Finally samples are polymerized at 80°C for 2 hours in a furnace under laboratory air. Compressive behavior is study to determinate the influence of fibers natures and the effect of cross-linking. Reproducibility is also checked.

Rectangular orthotropic glass fiber reinforced plastic sandwich panels were tested under uniform out-of-plane pressure and the strains and deflections were compared with those from finite-element models of the panels. The panels, with 0.32 cm (0.125 in.) face sheets and a 1.27 cm (0.5 in.)core of either balsa or linear polyvinylchloride foam, were tested in two sizes: 183 × 92 cm (72 × 36 in.) and121 × 92 cm (48 × 36 in.). The sandwich panels were fabricated using the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding technique. The two short edges of the sandwich panels were clamped, while the two long edges were simply supported. Uniform external pressure was applied using two large water inflatable bladders in series. The deflection and strains were measured using dial gages and strain gages placed at quarter and half points on the surface of the panels. Measurements were made up to a maximum out-of-plane pressure of 0.1 MPa (15psi). A total of six balsa core and six foam core panels were tested. Finite-element models were constructed for the 183-cm-long panel and the121-cm-long panel. Correlation between numerical and experimental strains to deflect the sandwich panel was much better on the top (tensile) side of the panels than on the bottom (compressive)side of the panels, regardless of panel aspect ratio or core material. All sandwich panels exhibited the same compressive strain reversal behavior on the compressive side of the panel. This phenomenon was thought to be due to nonlinearly induced micro-buckling under the strain gages, buckling of the woven fabric, or micro-cracking within the resin.

Abstract Compression molding with liquid encapsulants is a crucial process in microelectronic packaging. Material properties of highly filled systems of reactive epoxy molding compounds (EMC) depend on process conditions in a complex manner, such as shear-thinning behavior, which is superimposed by a time- and temperature-dependent conversion rate, both strongly affecting viscosity. The focus is set on forces exerted on individual dies during encapsulation in Fan-Out Wafer Level Packaging (FOWLP). The presented framework consists of an analytical approach to calculate the melt front velocity and simulations carried out to capture the nonlinear kinematics, chemo-rheology, as well as to extract forces exerted on individual dies. It offers separate evaluation of pressure and shear-contributions for two cases, 0 ° and 45 ° between the dies' frontal area and the melt front. Process parameters, such as compression speed and process temperature, are determined to minimize flying dies and thereby maximize yield. The approach is easily scalable and is therefore well suited to face the challenges that come with the current efforts towards the transition from FOWLP to FOPLP (Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging).
