Using radiothermoluminescence (RTL), the molecular mobility features in the temperature range of 77-300 K were studied for the polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene elastomer SKEPT-4044 with NiO, Cu2O and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) based on ABS-acrylonitrile butadiene or SCS-divinyl styrene matrices. It has been shown that the introduction of nanofillers in PP significantly affects the nature and temperature of γ- and β-relaxation processes, while the region of manifestation of the β-process noticeably shifts to the region of low temperatures. Composites with Cu2O NPs have a higher β-transition temperature Tβ than composites with other NPs. It was found that PP/SKEPT-4044 composites with Cu2O NPs with a dispersion of 11-15 nm and acrylonitrile butadiene thermoplastics have optimal frost resistance compared to other compositions.

AbstractBuckling and vibration study of the shape memory polymer composites (SMPC) across the glass transition temperature under heterogeneous loading conditions are presented. Finite element analysis based on C° continuity equation through the higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) is employed considering non linear Von Karman approach to estimate critical buckling and vibration for the temperature span from 273 to 373 K. Extensive numerical investigations are presented to understand the effect of temperature, boundary conditions, aspect ratio, fiber orientations, laminate stacking and modes of phenomenon on the buckling and vibration behavior of SMPC beam along with the validation and convergence study. Effect of thermal conditions, particularly in the glass transition region of the shape memory polymer, is considerable and presents cohesive relation between dynamic modulus properties with magnitude of critical buckling and vibration. Moreover, it has also been inferred that type of axial loading condition along with the corresponding boundary conditions significantly affect the buckling and vibration load across the glass transition region.

AbstractWe have performed experimental and theoretical investigation of the anomalous form of the compression diagrams and shape memory restoration curves in Ni_49Fe_18Ga_27Co_6 alloy crystals deformed by uniaxial compression along the [011]_ A crystallographic direction ( A -austenite) in the temperature range of 200–350 K. It is found that in the investigated temperature range, all compression diagrams contain anomalous segments of smooth and sharp decrease in deforming stresses. It is shown that the segments of a smooth decrease in stress are associated with peculiarities in martensite reaction L1_2 → 14M, while segments of a sharp drop are due to instability of martensite reactions 14M → L1_0 and L1_2 → L1_0. A possible source of reaction instability is associated with interfacial stresses at the interfaces between the martensite and austenite phases (lamellas) due to different elastic moduli of contacting phases. The magnitude of these stresses is significant in the case of 14M → L1_0 and L1_2 → L1_0 transformations, which induces a sharp drop of the deforming stress, while the restoration of the shape memory effect is of a burst nature. It is established that the contribution of interfacial stresses to the free energy of martensite transformation is smaller than the dissipative (entropy) contribution to this energy; however, interfacial stresses higher than a certain threshold strongly affect transformation kinetics and, hence, determine the strongly anomalous shape of pseudoelastic deformation curves and burst restoration of the shape memory effect.

Thermally activated shape memory polymers (SMPs) can memorize a temporary shape at low temperature and return to their permanent shape at higher temperature. These materials can be used for light and compact space deployment mechanisms. The control of transition temperature and thermomechanical properties of epoxy-based SMPs can be done using functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additives, which are also known to improve the durability to atomic oxygen in the space environment. In this study, the influence of varying amounts of two types of POSS added to epoxy-based SMPs on the shape memory effect (SME) were studied. The first type contained amine groups, whereas the second type contained epoxide groups. The curing conditions were defined using differential scanning calorimetry and glass transition temperature (Tg) measurements. Thermomechanical and SME properties were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that SMPs containing amine-based POSS show higher Tg, better shape fixity and faster recovery speed, while SMPs containing epoxide-based POSS have higher crosslinking density and show superior thermomechanical properties above Tg. This work demonstrates how the Tg and SME of SMPs can be controlled by the type and amount of POSS in an epoxy-based SMP nanocomposite for future space applications.

The crystallization activation energy (Δ E) of a polymer comprises the nucleation activation energy Δ F and the transport activation energy Δ E*. In this paper, the Δ E of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nucleated with nucleating agent p- tert-butylcalix[8]arene (tBC8) was calculated. The results showed that the Δ E of nucleated PLLA was 165.97 kJ/mol, which is higher than that of pure PLLA. The reason why Δ E of PLLA increased when incorporating nucleating agent was studied. The increment of glass transition temperature ( Tg) for nucleated PLLA revealed that the polymer chain mobility was restricted by tBC8, which was considered as the reason for the increase of Δ E*. Further, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to improve the chain mobility, thus eliminated the variation of the transport activation energy Δ E* caused by tBC8. Then the effect of the increment of crystallization temperature range on the increase of Δ F was also taken into consideration. It was concluded that both decreasing the mobility of chain segments and increasing the crystallization temperature range caused an increase of Δ E for PLLA/tBC8.
