The disposal of agricultural straw has been a severe environmental concern in China and many other countries. In this study, the complex modulus of using biochar converted from straw as an alternative mineral filler in asphalt mastic was investigated through both laboratory tests and modeling. The experimental results indicated that the biochar can provide asphalt mastic higher stiffness than the conventional granite mineral filler. It was believed that the special porous structure of biochar providing a thicker coating layer of mineral filler increases the stiffness modulus of asphalt mastic. To consider this factor into the micromechanical model, a modified generalized self-consistent model (MGSCM) with a coating layer was proposed. Besides, the finite element (FE) microstructural model with a coating layer generated by random aggregate distribution method was used to numerically evaluate the effect of the coating layer on the complex modulus of asphalt mastics. The predicted results indicated that the generalized self-consistent model (MGSCM) with a coating layer is an efficient and accurate model for predicting the complex modulus of asphalt mastics. Moreover, the FE modeling proved that the coating layer can significantly improve the complex modulus of asphalt mastics. Therefore, the experiments and modeling carried out in this study provided insight for biochar applications to improve the performance of asphalt mixtures.

In this work, related performances of asphalt binders with Bayer red mud powder (RMP) were studied. RMP replaced the traditional limestone powder (LSP) as a filler in asphalt binder. The replacement rates were 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively. In this study, seven F/A (filler-to-asphalt, weight/weight) ratios for each of the fillers were selected: 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, and 2.1. Penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity (RV), dynamic shear rheometry (DSR), and bending beam rheometry (BBR) tests were used to evaluate the properties of the asphalt binder. Penetration into the asphalt binder decreases linearly with increasing F/A ratio. Moreover, penetration of binder with RMP is lower than that of asphalt binder with LSP (RMP0), and among the five fillers tested, RMP100 showed most significant influence on penetration of the asphalt binder. The addition of RMP increases the softening point of the binder. DSR results show that the improvement in the high temperature performance is most significant after replacing 75% of the LSP with Bayer RMP. BBR results show that with increasing substitution of RMP for LSP, the creep stiffness (S) increased while the rate of change of S (m-value) declined. The low temperature performance of every asphalt binder was not enough to meet the Superpave requirements. In order to meet the Superpave requirements for S and m-values, the maximum F/A ratios of the five replacements corresponding to the fillers with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% RMP, were 1.3, 1.2, 1.1, 1.0 and 0.9, respectively. At 135 °C, rotational viscosity showed that RMP75 and RMP100 with a maximum F/A ratio of 1.1 are the best choices for asphalt binders, considering economic and construction requirements.

Asphalt mastic plays an important role in asphalt mixtures for pavement engineering. Understanding the asphalt–filler interaction behavior is essential to improve the pavement performance of asphalt mastics. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the asphalt–filler interaction ability based on macro-rheological measurements and to investigate the asphalt–filler interaction mechanism associated with microstructural characteristics of asphalt mastics. First, the asphalt–filler interaction was characterized using macro-rheological features of asphalt mastics based on dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) tests. Second, the physico-chemical interaction between the asphalt and filler was qualitatively evaluated using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Third, the asphalt–filler interaction behavior was investigated in terms of the micro-morphological properties of mineral fillers and asphalt mastics by conducting scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) tests. Finally, the grey relational analysis (GRA) was employed to identify the correlation between the properties of mineral fillers and the macro–micro performances of asphalt mastics. The results show that a higher content of alkaline mineral filler within the critical volume fraction range produced a greater interaction ability between the asphalt and filler. The asphalt–filler interaction is mainly a physical action since no obvious new adsorption peaks appeared in the FTIR spectrum. The micro-morphological characteristics of asphalt mastic mainly depended on the adsorption effect of mineral fillers on polar fractions and the dispersion effect of mineral fillers on wax crystals in the asphalt binder. Based on the results of the GRA, the acidity and content of mineral fillers exhibited a great influence on the micro-morphological and macro-rheological characteristics of asphalt mastics, and the specific surface area of the mineral filler exerted a significant influence on the asphalt–filler interaction ability. Furthermore, the K-B- δ index was more appropriate for evaluating the asphalt–filler interaction ability.
