The bending test is one of the most important tests that demonstrates the advantages of functional gradient (FGM) materials, thanks to the stress gradient across the specimen depth. In this research, the flexural response of functionally graded polymeric composite material (FGM) is investigated both experimentally and numerically. Fabricated by a hand lay-up manufacturing technique, the unidirectional glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite composed of ten layers is used in the present investigation. A 3-D finite element simulation is used to predict the flexural strength based on Hashin’s failure criterion. To produce ten layers of FGM beams with different patterns, the fiber volume fraction ( Vf%) ranges from 10% to 50%. A comparison between FGM beams and conventional composite beams having the same average Vf% is made. The experimental results show that the failure of the FGM beams under three points bending loading (3PB) test is initiated from the tensioned layers, and spread to the upper layer. The spreading is followed by delamination accompanied by shear failures. Finally, the FGM beams fail due to crushing in the compression zone. Furthermore, the delamination failure between the layers has a major effect on the rapidity of the final failure of the FGM beams. The present numerical results show that the gradient pattern of FGM beams is a critical parameter for improving their flexural behavior. Otherwise, Vf% of the outer layers of the FGM beams, i.e. Vf% = 30, 40, or 50%, is responsible for improving their flexural strength.

Using the analytical and numerical approaches, the nonlinear dynamic behaviors in the vicinity of a compound critical point are studied for a simply supported functionally graded materials (FGMs) rectangular plate. Normal form theory, bifurcation and stability theory are used to find closed form solutions for equilibria and periodic motions. Stability conditions of these solutions are obtained explicitly and critical boundaries are also derived. Finally, numerical results are presented to confirm the analytical predictions

It is difficult to meet all the different material and economical requirements posed to a MEMS structural layer that can be integrated with the electronics on the same substrate using a single layer process. Therefore a multilayer process, which uses a combination of a CVD crystallization layer and a high-growth rate PECVD bulk layer was developed. High-quality films with excellent electrical and mechanical properties can be obtained at low temperature (#450°C) and high deposition rates (~100 nm/min). Fine-tuning of the stress gradient is accomplished by the use of a top stress compensation layer, whose optimal thickness was estimated from an evaluation of the stress gradient profile over thickness. These layers have been used for processing a 10 µm thick poly-SiGe gyroscope on top of a standard 0.35 µm CMOS process.

This work studies the dynamic response of Bernoulli–Euler multilayered polymer functionally graded carbon nanotubes-reinforced composite nano-beams subjected to hygro-thermal environments. The governing equations were derived by employing Hamilton’s principle on the basis of the local/nonlocal stress gradient theory of elasticity (L/NStressG). A Wolfram language code in Mathematica was written to carry out a parametric investigation on the influence of different parameters on their dynamic response, such as the nonlocal parameter, the gradient length parameter, the mixture parameter and the hygro-thermal loadings and the total volume fraction of CNTs for different functionally graded distribution schemes. It is shown how the proposed approach is able to capture the dynamic behavior of multilayered polymer FG-CNTRC nano-beams under hygro-thermal environments.

In this manuscript the dynamic response of porous functionally-graded (FG) Bernoulli–Euler nano-beams subjected to hygro-thermal environments is investigated by the local/nonlocal stress gradient theory of elasticity. In particular, the influence of several parameters on both the thermo-elastic material properties and the structural response of the FG nano-beams, such as material gradient index, porosity volume fraction, nonlocal parameter, gradient length parameter, mixture parameter is examined. It is shown how the proposed approach is able to capture the dynamic behavior of porous functionally graded Bernoulli–Euler nano-beams under hygro-thermal loads and leads to well-posed structural problems of nano-mechanics.
