Aims: This study aimed to assess the effect of Scorzanera undulata on plasma lipid profile. Background: Scorzanera undulata (S. undulata) is a medicinal plant popularly used in the Moroccan pharmacopeia as traditional medicine, particularly to treat diabetes mellitus. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of aqueous extract of Scorzanera undulata tubers (AERSU) on lipid profile and atherogenic indices in Wistar rats. Biochemical parameters such as total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-and high-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (LDL and HDL) were assessed. Furthermore, the in vitro antioxidant activity of AERSU was also evaluated. Methods: The effect of tubers aqueous extract (AERSU) of S. undulata (20 mg/kg) on plasma lipid profile was investigated in normal and streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The aqueous extract was tested for its in vitro antioxidant activity. In addition cardiovascular parameters were estimated. Results: Treatment with AERSU significantly improved the weight in diabetic rats and decreased plasma cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL lipoproteins levels. Furthermore, the extract had a favorable impact on atherogenic index (AI) and coronary risk index (CRI). In addition, AERSU seems to possess a potent in vitro antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that aqueous Scorzanera undulata extract exhibits antidyslipidemic and antioxidant activities.

Objective: The evaluation of the hypolipidemic and antioxidant activities of the aerial parts aqueous extract of Corrigiola telephiifolia (APAE of C. telephiifolia) in normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: The effects of oral administration of APAE of C. telephiifolia (5 mg/kg) on the lipid profile as well as the in vitro antioxidant activity of this aqueous extract have been determined. Results: APAE of C. telephiifolia (5 mg/kg) reduced significantly (p<0.001) the plasma total cholesterol levels in diabetic rats. In contrast, no significant increase in plasma triglyceride levels in normal and in STZ-induced diabetic rats was observed. On the other hand, APAE of C. telephiifolia showed an antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The APAE of C. telephiifolia exhibits an antioxidant, cholesterol and body weightlowering activities in diabetic rats.

Aims: The study was conducted to assess the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of Lippia citriodora. Background: Lippia citriodora Kunth (Verbenaceae) is a medicinal plant with many traditional uses. Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the antidiabetic activity of aqueous extract of Lippia citriodora and its capacity to improve lipid profile in diabetic rats. Material and Methods: Normal and diabetic rats were treated orally during 15 days by the leaves aqueous extract of Lippia citriodora (LCLAE) (100 mg/kg). The whole glucose utilization and liver architecture were also evaluated. The in vitro antioxidant activity of LCLAE was also assessed. Results: LCLAE lowered blood glucose and lipid levels in all groups. Moreover, LCLAE ameliorated the liver structure and exhibited antioxidant activity. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study demonstrates the hypoglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effects of LCLAE in rats.

Background: Ferula asafoetida is a dried latex that is exuded from rhizome or taproot species. Organosulfides are primarily responsible for flavour and odour of asafoetida.Ferula asafoetida is a natural medicine good for asthma and bronchitis. is also used to relieve stomach gas, digestive issues. It is usually added while cooking to  hormonise the sweet, sour, salty, spicy taste of the food. Increased activity of xanthine oxidase is involved in the medical condition known as gout, which is characterized by hyperuricemia that leads to deposition of uric acid in the joints resulting in painful inflammation. Aim: To analyse the anti-oxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory potential of aqueous extract of Ferula asafoetida. Materials and Methods: Preparation of the aqueous seed extract of Ferula asafoetida  done by hot percolation method. Phytochemical screening, in vitro antioxidant activity and xanthine oxidase inhibitory potential was done by standard procedures. The data were analyzed statistically by a one - way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s multiple range test was used to see the statistical significance among the groups. The results with the p<0.05 level were considered to be statistically significant. Results: The phytochemical screening revealed that the extract is rich in phytoconstituents. DPPH radical scavenging activity established the potent in vitro antioxidant activity (p<0.05) of Ferula asafoetida extract. The extract was also efficient in inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase enzyme (p<0.05) in a concentration dependent manner. Discussion: The extract has potent antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory potential, although the activities are less compared to the standard drug. Conclusion: The Ferula asafoetida extract can be used to treat gout and to combat various other disorders associated with xanthine oxidase activity.
