AbstractThe demand for energy harvesting technologies has been increasing over the years that can be attributed to its significance to low power applications. One of the key problems associated with the available vibration-based harvester is the maximum peak power can only be achieved when the device frequency matches the source frequency to generate low usable power. Therefore, in this study, a magnetically-tunable hybrid piezoelectric-triboelectric energy harvester (MT-HPTEH) was designed and optimised. Four key design factors: mass placement, triboelectric surface area, extension length and magnetic stiffness were investigated and optimised. The voltage generation from piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanisms was determined individually to understand the effect of each design factor on the mechanisms. An output power of 659 µW at 180 kΩ at 44 Hz was obtained from the optimised MT-HPTEH with a theoretical–experimental discrepancy of less than 10%. The added magnetically-tunable feature enabled the harvester to work at the desired frequency range with an open circuit voltage between 7.800 and 20.314 V and a frequency range from 38 to 54 Hz. This MT-HPTEH can power at least six wireless sensor networks and can be used for low power applications such as RFID tags. Future work may include designing of energy-saving and sustainable harvester.

A Monte Carlo simulation methodology is suggested in order to assess the impact of ambient wind on a vehicle’s performance and emissions. A large number of random wind profiles is generated by implementing the Weibull and uniform statistical distributions for wind speed and direction, respectively. Wind speed data are drawn from eight cities across Europe. The vehicle considered is a diesel-powered, turbocharged, light-commercial vehicle and the baseline trip is the worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicles WLTC cycle. A detailed engine-mapping approach is used as the basis for the results, complemented with experimentally derived correction coefficients to account for engine transients. The properties of interest are (engine-out) NO and soot emissions, as well as fuel and energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Results from this study show that there is an aggregate increase in all properties, vis-à-vis the reference case (i.e., zero wind), if ambient wind is to be accounted for in road load calculation. Mean wind speeds for the different sites examined range from 14.6 km/h to 24.2 km/h. The average increase in the properties studied, across all sites, ranges from 0.22% up to 2.52% depending on the trip and the property (CO2, soot, NO, energy consumption) examined. Based on individual trip assessment, it was found that especially at high vehicle speeds where wind drag becomes the major road load force, CO2 emissions may increase by 28%, NO emissions by 22%, and soot emissions by 13% in the presence of strong headwinds. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the adverse effect of headwinds far exceeds the positive effect of tailwinds, thus explaining the overall increase in fuel/energy consumption as well as emissions, while also highlighting the shortcomings of the current certification procedure, which neglects ambient wind effects.

This study presents an experimental investigation and thermodynamic 0D modeling of the combustion of a compression-ignition engine, fueled by an alternative fuel based on neem biodiesel (B100) as well as conventional diesel (D100). The study highlights the effects of the engine load at 50%, 75% and 100% and the influence of the heat loss models proposed by Woschni, Eichelberg and Hohenberg on the variation in the cylinder pressure. The study shows that the heat loss through the cylinder wall is more pronounced during diffusion combustion regardless of the nature of the fuels tested and the load range required. The cylinder pressures when using B100 estimated at 89 bars are relatively higher than when using D100, about 3.3% greater under the same experimental conditions. It is also observed that the problem of the high pressure associated with the use of biodiesels in engines can be solved by optimizing the ignition delay. The net heat release rate remains roughly the same when using D100 and B100 at 100% load. At low loads, the D100 heat release rate is higher than B100. The investigation shows how wall heat losses are more pronounced in the diffusion combustion phase, relative to the premix phase, by presenting variations in the curves.

Nonlinear numerical analysis of the stress performance of SRC-RC transfer columns was carried out in this paper with the finite element software of ABAQUS. Compered with the experimental result , numerical analysis result are found to be reasonable.Then the influence of factors such as extension length of shape steel , area ratio of shape steel and axial-load ratio were contrastively analyzed . The results show that extension length of shape steel and the area ratio of shape steel have a greater influence on the bearing capacity and the hysteretic performance of transfer column ,but axial-load ratio has less influence .
